Angkor Wat replica will be made in Bihar :smitten::devil:

Yes I have heard. Along with Nalanda university restoration/development. I hope Bihar becomes a cultural and educational hub yet again for the whole India and whole civilised world again.

Who can forget that long before Delhi....Pataliputra (Patna) was the great political capital of India.

Tiruchendur murthi was recently on a visit to a Singapore temple (for Singapore's 50th year anniversary) , my parents (who live there) went many times to get blessings.

Every year at Tiruchendur seaside they re-enact the defeat of the various demons by lord murugan (Karthikeya to North Indians)....with much pomp and noise on the seaside beach.....fireworks for the missiles, all kinds of props and aids and the almighty "vel" (lance) of Murugan.

The temple my daddy said was the "Barracks" of the lord....a holy place where good defeated evil. A special temple for Tamil people....in many ways Muruga is the most dear god for the Tamils.

He has the 6 main houses (Tiruchendur is one of them) the "arupadaiveedu", all with different stories regarding Him...that form the major backbone of Muruga worship in TN and South India.

Thanks for the list, and tagging me, There are temples where there is no worship, it is only a structure, the temples should be classified in to ancient or new, I have seen all the temples, except for jain and saibaba temple, even though I have seen gommateshwara, there is no big temple there, and in yamunothri gangotri it is a concrete structure, sanchi stupa is not a temple, as for famous temples in south india it is 1) tirupathi, 2) kanchi 3) sabari malai 4) dharmasthala 5) tanjavoor 6) rameshwaram 7) gokarna 8) ahobilam 9) srisailam 10) pandarapur 11) belur & halebidu 12) melukote 13) murudeshwar 14) golden temple vellore 15) padmanabha swamy temple 16) trissur Parthasarathi temple 17) horanadu annapoorna temple 18) kukke subramanya swamy temple 19) Mysore chamundeshwari temple 20) talakaveri
All these temples are very very famous and attracts a lot of people and are ancient not built recently.

I covered Tiruchendur kovil in the previous post....1 of the 6 arupadai veedu for Murugan.

Now is the turn of Palani....or Palanimalai (malai means mountain/hill in Tamil....this temple is located on one).

The pronounciation is Pa-zha-ni the "zh" is a special "L" in Tamil/Malayalam. Even Tamil is technically Ta-mizh.

The lore behind the temple is that Celestial sage Narada once visited and gave a fruit (normally represented as a mango) to Lord Shiva "gnana-pazham" - a fruit upon consumption would give great wisdom. Shiva intended to cut the fruit to give equally to his two sons....but sage Narada said this should not be done, it should be eaten entirely by only one.

So Shiva put a competition to his two sons, whoever could go around the world 3 times first would get it. Muruga in his boyhood pride (his vehicle was the divine peacock which would make the matter quite easy for him) immediately set off to win.

Ganesh (Pillayar as we Tamils call him) on the other hand had no such fancy vehicle (his was a rat)....but immediately judged that his two parents were the equivalent of the world and so he would go around them instead. Shiva was pleased with this and awarded him the fruit.

When Murugan returned, he got very angry at this turn of events and left the abode of the gods to complete severe penances and meditation at Palani...to learn about himself more, the nature of existence and to leave his boyishness youth and immaturity in the process. He lived as a hermit here and thus the murthi here is one of a boy hermit, no ornaments, simple loincloth, staff and shorn head.

It is one of the very few temples where the murthi faces west rather than east, and the abhishekams for the lord here are well known throughout TN and beyond. The panchamritam prasad is also very famous....for it is said to be a special preparation that Ganapathi made especially for his brother and father.

A temple with great significance for our family, we have been to it many times.
