^ UAE locals actually eat a lot fish, before oil they were all sea traders and fishermen, so, many of their local cuisine is fish based, unlike saudi arabia where it's mostly red meat

1) The data given by @Tikolo is based on the rate of yearly consumption per head. It is natural that Bangladesh is not there. You can say BD people love to eat fish. But, most people cannot afford to buy. Recently, fish production has entered the market economy unlike before when the villagers would cultivate fish in their ponds and water bodies nearby.

2) Population is up, pond ownerships have been fragmented, water is not seen in many places because of flood protection measures. So, fish is less available now by our traditional methods.

3) So, people are cultivating fish in the ponds and sometimes at the edges of a river. They buy fry fish, nurcher them in those water bodies and provide food. They marketize the fish with the help of middlemen. So, the fish prices are expensive now, not affordable by poor people.

4) There are more population than before. But, the production is not up per head. People living in the coastal belt like to eat sea fish, but not others. So, sea fish production cannot be up suddenly.

5) Fish cannot also be preserved because BD does not have enough cold storage facilities. This discourages the trawlers to catch more than required for one day.

So, there are many factors that are inhibiting the consumption of fish in BD though people's first choice is fish. However, given time the production and consumption will certainly rise.

I'm surprised Arabs don't have a big fishing sector...I mean, they a desert with sea all around them...you expect a lot of fishing, no?

they do along the coastal areas, thats why UAE and Oman are right up there. Central arabians hate fish though, they can't do without their goats, lambs and even camels
