Toothless sanctions? Iranian oil trade booming, China top buyer

When it comes for you to state the truth geopolitics status nowaday when usa still keeps its rein over uk/france/ozies/japan/S Korea and cautioning on China many times on the consequences of non-compliance with sanctions; you dont mention it. You are twisting facts.
Still no credible explanations on how US allies defied US.

vietnam is self sufficient on grains and food so to speak.
Then why did Viet Nam required Soviet economic aid AFTER unification? And please do not say because of the war.

north koreans are severely short of food. We are supplying North Koreans with truckload after truck loads but we have our limitations in the donation.
Goody for China. But this reinforced the point that a sanction is not a blockade. There is nothing to prevent China from persuading other countries from dealing with North Korea, is there?

what are you saying! us+ aliies are COMPLYING
with the us led sanctions!

vietnam is a much productive country agriculturally than North Korea >>>FACT! Vietnam is exporting rice and other produce!

Have you taken you pills alzheimer old man! Sanction is very damaging to a country's livelihood next to a blockade! Only rich countries which have a food surplus or affordable can help. Most of them are under the influence of warmonger USA!

he claims himself Pakistanis in some other thread

well, coconut pakistanis like @liontk @FaujHistorian @Mercenary @VCheng @Wombat who fawn upon the anglosaxon ways of being and thinking and resent their brown skins out of their new nationalities or current circumstances or economic incentives or purely weakness in conviction and cheapness in character. we see plenty of bananas among hk-ers and DPP followers as well and i by no means hold a small number of coconuts against pakistan just as i don't hold a few bananas against my own race and blood. but i am hard on these coconuts because these fruits need to know that they cannot get away with cheap shots, stupidity, intellectual dishonesty, revisionist history, and hypocrisy when they reproduce anglosaxon propaganda to smear eurasian nations and peoples.

By CHOICE, not by force. If you want to blame choices made by outsiders, then why the reluctance to blame choices, such as that of an economic foundation, made by the North Korea leadership?

economic and political force old man

Not after unification. And Soviet economic aid to Viet Nam is a fact.

ussr is not aiding vietnam every single year

I repeat: DPRK is deficient in food production and supply while vietnam is not. that is why the impact of a sanction on DPRK is so severe and the usa is using this "food aid" as a weapon trying to bring the north koreans to submission

you are talking trash again. China has evolved into a model of its own!

@iajj

good day to you iajj, you think of yourselves as smart trashing other peoples heritage. What is your problem with anglais people, they have not done anything wrong to you, the past is the past. Are you still upset about historical reason or something, anglo sexon as you put it, they are nice people, lived here my entire life and never felt any racism for having partial pakistaniè herìtage. You can come here and check it out, there is hardly any racism here, actually most people in college here are orientals and south asians, so no racism what so ever. I know you will not believe me, but canadienne identity is multiracial like melting pot, if you have a bad experience in north america, I apologize for that.

Also no body fawns here over anybody here, we all have our month in the year to celebrate our cultural festival, in fact after school classes are offered in urdu, punjabi and cantonese to students from young age to help us preserve our culture. As far as religion goes, we all take comparative religion class , which covers most religions as balance as they can. you have to start accepting that the world is changing, look people can`t change the past, so stop being a victim and blindly racist towards anglophones or anglo-saxon as you call em.

look I don't know how I can get to you but lets play your scenario, I am trying to reason with you, do you not see that I am trying to make you understand the simple concept of multiculturalism, its not hard you just have to open your mind. First atleast agree that all human are equal despite what there racial compositions may be. While l'europe was involved in 100 year ethnic strife in europe, the overseas colonies were a melting pot. immigrants came here to start a new life , they didn't care that much about sectarian boundaries. Slowly this wave broke down old world taboos like scottish and francophone settlers mixing with natives, then assimilating to a certain degree forming a new Metis identity. However that is all part of the americas mosaic, people here don't really care what you are, people are quarter, white, black filipinio, manchu and what not but no body cares about that. its about every generation of immigrants concerned with a common goal of achieving a candienne dream or american dream as its widely known. As a result, americas was able to take over the old world in barely 2 centuries because of innovation and our tolerance to different cultures, which enabled the society to get along. Its a big cultural mish mash and that what makes it interesting, growing up attending friends bar mitzvahs, doing eid-christmas-hanukkah holiday parties (yes me and my buds have done it) and I mean its a fun experience that you would never get anywhere in the world growing up.

As far as ecnomic data goes, I am not wrong about innovation, this is only the tip of iceberg, the countries in southern americas are now emerging, while mexico is in g20(impressive growth), brazil is a strong contender for future global power and argentina just continues to amaze the economist. In terms of HDI, costa rica and panama are leading the way for latin america. This creole culture is actually the real strength of americas, I hope you understand that diversity through strength is possible and stop with excessive political incorrect terms like "rootless races" and keep your personal views to yourself, because I do not recommend you to preach this view on street of toronto for your own safety, forget america trust me on that one.

1 USD = 38000 IRR, You can't say it toothless

Good point.

Most of the pro-Ayatullah posters probably get special grants/checks or they may be just plain old religious fundoos.

What do they care if an ordinary Iranian has to spend an arm and leg to buy little stuff at the exchange rate of

1 USD = 12,284.65 IRR as of today. That is 12 fing 1000 ryals in one fing dollar. you get it. 12 with 3 zeros

Just imagine that before Ayatullahs started raping Iran,

1 USD = 70ish IRR that is well under 100.

Now look at the economical disaster when Mullahs have made this great nation's currency drop almost 200 times (178 to be exact).

In any other place, with that kind of strong historical civilization like Iranian, people would have paraded their Mullahs naked.

Even Egyptians got rid of that black faced un-Mubarak.

But these supporters of Ayatullahs don't even have that kind of guts so they will continue singing Ayatullah songs, because they have to.

peace

It's mostly because of incompetence of Ahmadinejad government, not sanctions.Sanctions are a good excuse for them to get away with mismanagement.

Most of people say so, Let's see what happen next year. Thanks God my salary is in $ :bunny:

. . .
The Iranians have done quite well inspite of the sanctions against them. Oil and their self respect has enabled them to do so. @KRAIT:)

SINGAPORE/TOKYO, Feb 1 (Reuters) - Iran's crude exports to its biggest customer, Asia, fell by a quarter in 2012 and shipments this year are expected to drop by at least 12 percent under U.S. sanctions pressure, but ample alternative supplies will keep refiners flush with oil.

Asia's main oil buyers cut imports from Iran to an average of 1.09 million barrels per day in 2012, government and industry data shows, and planned cuts in term contracts for 2013 point to further reductions of at least 135,000 bpd.

However, experts say overall cuts would have to be deeper to secure further waivers from the U.S. sanctions that are aimed at forcing Iran to halt its nuclear programme and which have made shipping and paying for Iranian oil difficult, cutting overall exports by more than half in 2012.

From Asia, Iran lost $14 billion worth of oil exports for the year, according to Reuters calculations. Exports will remain under pressure this year as well as the United States lobbies Asian countries to further reduce purchases, even though Iranian exports last month rose to their highest since the EU imposed sanctions in July.

An abundance of alternative supplies, mainly from the Middle East, of oil that is of similar quality to what Iran exports and stable prices mean Asian buyers will be able to easily make up for the loss in shipments from Iran.

"Thanks to the efforts of Saudi Arabia, growth of production in Iraq and the United States, I do not expect any major difficulty in terms of meeting global oil demand this year," said Fatih Birol, chief economist at the International Energy Agency which advises industrialised nations on energy policies.

The drop in Iranian exports "will not affect the market in a negative sense", he told reporters in Tokyo.

Almost all of Iran's exports flow to Asia.

WINNERS AND LOSERS

Most Asian refiners have so far been unaffected by the lack of Iranian oil as they have complex processing facilities that allow them to switch from one type of crude to another. Only Sri Lanka was forced to shut its sole Iran oil-specific refinery.

A further reduction in Iranian exports may drive up costs if more and more buyers go after the same alternative crude, but that scenario is so far unlikely because of plentiful supplies.

The top beneficiaries of Iran's reduced exports last year were Saudi Arabia, Angola, Iraq, Venezuela and Russia as these countries ramped up shipments to plug the shortfall from Iran.

Top exporter Saudi Arabia cut production by 700,000 barrels per day (bpd) in the final two months of 2012, partly because of the weak global demand outlook. The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries' latest report indicated world supply will comfortably outstrip demand in the first half of 2013.

"The reduction in Iranian supplies so far has not affected any of the major refiners in Asia," said Victor Shum, senior partner at IHS Purvin & Gertz in Singapore.

"Supplies are plentiful and, directionally, OPEC spare capacity is actually increasing because of the Saudi cutbacks to replace any Iranian supplies."

CUTTING SHIPMENTS

Iran's biggest oil customer, China, reduced imports by 21 percent to 438,448 barrels per day (bpd) in 2012, while the deepest reduction was made by Japan, which cut 40 percent of imports to 189,076 bpd.

South Korea slashed imports by 36 percent to 153,400 bpd and India reduced purchases by 1.7 percent to 315,200 bpd.

Japan's oil imports from Iran may be about 15 percent lower this year, capped roughly at 160,000 bpd, and may possibly be cut further, said Yasushi Kimura, the chairman of JX Nippon Oil & Energy Corp, the country's top refiner.

China may reduce its purchases from Iran by a further 5 to 10 percent in 2013, industry sources said, which would amount to a reduction of 20,000-40,000 bpd.

India plans to cut oil imports from Iran by 10 to 15 percent in the next fiscal year, while South Korean refiners will cut imports of Iranian crude during the six months to May by about a fifth from a year earlier.

"If you ask me, can we cut more, yes we can cut more," said a senior official at a Japanese refiner who declined to be named because he was not authorised to talk to the media.

"And I believe Japanese refineries are configured to process other grades without cutting runs. As to why Asians import Iranian crude, it is because they are competitive."
