Many people are spreading the news that Europe has had its first Muslim mayor, and believe it is a milestone for Muslims in europe. However, this is certainly not the case. Most people probably don’t know that Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb is currently the mayor of Rotterdam (Holland). Albania and Bosnia regularly elect Muslim Mayors of European countries (because Albania and (parts of) Bosnia are majority-Muslim countries IN EUROPE (which people seem to have not remembered).

Sarajevo is the capital city of an European country. Rotterdam is Europe’s largest port-city. Of course there were also the Muslim ‘mayors’ of the most advanced city in Europe at one time, Cordoba, as well as other Andalusian (Iberian) and Muslim-ruled Sicilian cities for hundreds of years in the past.

Multiculturalism is not unknown in Europe or the Middle East for that matter. Many grand Viziers (Wuzaraa’) of Andalusian Amirs were Jews or Christians. Recently, the Majority Muslim city of Sarajevo (Bosnia) elected Christian mayor Ivo Komšić in 2013.

While it is a good sign that the people of London ignored or realised the low depths of the islamophobic campaign by the ruling UK party, the Tories, when they tried to imply Sadiq Khan was dubious by attempting to connect him with ‘extremism’. Sadiq Khan rebuffed them by arguing his Liberal credentials, by reminding people that he voted in parliament for the legalisation of gay marriage. It has been remarked by many journalists that Sadiq has never discussed his Muslim beliefs to any depth in public over his political career, other than to say they support ‘British values’, while at the same time saying he will do more to clamp down on ‘extremist’ beliefs (What beliefs and ideas does Sadiq Khan define as extremism?).

The test of acceptance of Islam as part of Western society hasn’t been met merely because a mayor was elected who called himself a Muslim. The real question we should ask ourselves is whether Muslims who openly express the details of their Islamic beliefs (especially those not considered agreeable by Secular Liberals), or who challenge the government narrative on what is ‘extremism’, ever going to get elected?

People may argue ‘how can the Tories or any supporter of Mr Khan, be Islamophobic if they do not take issue with his label as a Muslim?’ Islamophobia is not the hatred of Muslims, that would be ‘Muslimophobia’. Islamophobia is the hatred of Islam and all who profess Islamic beliefs, whatever they label themselves. The Islamophobes attacked Khan with accusations about the things he supports and believes, not that he was simply ‘a Muslim’. If Khan won the election by having to assert his Secular Liberal credentials (and his support of the Tory counter-‘extremism’ narrative/myth) and repudiate accusations that he hold certains Islamic beliefs, that is not a society that accepts Islam for what it is, or Muslims for who they are.

Of course, this doesn’t only apply to Muslims, some Christian politicians have responded ‘they don’t do God’, when asked about their beliefs – until after they retire from political office. Is a nation that doesn’t accept people in politics being open about their religious beliefs, truly a society accepting of them?

Not only that , sadiq khan also said that there's a problem with families where women wear hijab and that he finds many islamic beliefs abhorrent. He didn't even defend imam Suliman Gani , who was falsely labeled as an extremist that Mr. Khan shared platform with. Now this guy is the poster boy for western tolerance to the rest of the world. Can the west really accept muslims for who they really are? Say if a muslim candidate have islamic beliefs , can he/she ever get elected? I have no problem about who they elect. Its their country . But the problem is when they deceptively portray individuals like Khan as model muslims and lecture the muslim world about tolerance.

Btw don't get me wrong. I know many here on PDF are supporters of mr.Khan and some may even tell me that a bangladeshi has no business with london mayoral election. But what happens in the west effects the muslim world directly . In muslim countries london mayoral election was widely reported as something extraordinary . Muslims are really ignorant , gullible and believe everything at face value. The portrayal of khan's election as an example of western tolerance is a pure farce. The western gov and NGOs would use these events to lecture muslims both in the east and the west abt minority rights and many gullible muslims not knowing what's going on would bend over backward and would start using western narrative of "tolerance and rights" to defend themselves and thus give in to western liberal imperialism. I have already seen how muslims on social media are giving examples of minorities getting elected in indoneshia , BD , PAK etc etc. This is exactly what's going on for the last 100 years. This apologetic discourse by muslims is so pathetic.

.
What utter stupidity. There are hundreds of Muslim Mayors in UK and Europe. However British Pakistani Mayor of London is big. London. Yes London one of the worlds most influential cities. Don't need to say anymore. In addition this is a post that carries real power not as often is the case mere ceremonial position.

The Op is only b*tching because he wants to have the right to define what a Muslim is and what a extremist is. Tough. You don't get to decide. And on the subject of tolerance if Bangladesh elects a gay/Christian Mayor than you can lecture others on tolerance. Until than buzz off.

Will he exercise this 'big' position for the good of Muslims or Pakistan? I don't think so.

I have seen that Muslims in places of influence in the West are rarely interested in promoting the interests of Islam, Muslims and their home countries. Indians are another story. They will promote 'Bharat Mata' interests wherever they may be.

And Muslims are already defined in Islamic jurisprudence. Interestingly, secularists don't make the cut.

Are you a bonehead? He is Mayor of London. Yes London. That is his electorate. Some whom are of Pakistani origin.

interests of Islam
No idea what that means. However I know for sure people of Pakistani origin do their best to help their country of orgin including myself.

first of all, its londoners who elected Mr Khan, not 'british' public as such, its a mayoral election. The reason I need to point out, is because london is very different from rest of UK, in the composition of voters.
Mr Khan did not reject islam as you are potraying, that will be a political suicide too(london has huge muslim population). Any politician will do a balancing act based on what his/her constituents want. Many in conservative party are opposed to gay marriage for example but the reality of UK public opinion forces them to not go on about it. It does not make them any less christian.
So true christians and true hindus will find them unelectable, if they dont agree what the electorate believe. Mr Khan himself apparently said(long time ago) that liberal muslims are not true muslims.

.
in the composition of voters.
About 12% of London is Muslim so if your suggesting he won on back of the Muslim vote your very wrong. Unless you think 12% can trip 88% non Muslims.

Sadiq Khan won because he managed to garner votes from cross the ethnic spectrum in London. That's why he opened his campaign from a pub and has stated clearly he has no issues with Gays. You can't win elections in London or UK if you go in for extremism as you only bag the fringe vote. To get max votes you have to keep a very diverse electorate happy by treading a very middle ground. That is what democracy is all about.

And he certainly did not win on the back of the British Pakistani votes in London. Most British Pakistani's are found in Northern England or the Midlands. London is Indian and Bangladeshi dominated. Only 2.7% of London is British Pakistani.

Some of the most capable British Pakistani politicians like Sadiq Khan or Sajid Javed won from areas with low to almost zero British Pakistani's. For example Sajid Javid PM Cameron's Culture Secretary is from Bromsgrove a 98% non ethnic majority area.

Sadiq khan mayors election is a huge slap on the faces of jihadi / extremists in the west .. These jihadis / extremists should question muslim countries on the daily persecution of minorities living in their countries ...

. .
Sadiq khan is also pro-israel and went a long way to placate pro-zionist lobby in UK. Was Israel major issue concerning londoners? @hinduguy

He opposed the peaceful BDS movement against apartheid Israel:

"BDS doesn't work. I'm not in favour. I won't give a running commentary on the Middle East as mayor."

His views on women wearing niqab :

"What you see now are people born and raised here who are choosing to wear the jilbab [a loose gown] or niqab. There is a question to be asked about what is going on in those homes. What’s insidious is if people are starting to think it is appropriate to treat women differently or that it has been forced on them. What worries me is children being forced to adopt a lifestyle.

Not to mention he didn't forget to thank his patrons after getting elected and criticizes his own party leader. He must have his eyes on the PM seat and would do anything. Power corrupts.

Khan-Regev.jpg

He met with Mark Regev (far left in the pic). One of the most bigoted zionist Israeli and is known for his defense of israeli war crimes and apartheid.

SO in short to be considered a "moderate muslim" by the UK and western establishments , one must ridicule islamic beliefs, profess liberal secular values , be pro-zionist and equate anti-Zionism with antisemitism. SO much for tolerance.

SO what if its london? The question is of tolerance of islam and muslims in the west and the deceptive way the western media is projecting khan's election as tolerance. Khan is liberal who has similar views as the majority and he is part of the british majority. In fact he ridiculed Islamic beliefs to prove his liberal credentials showing the level of intolerance british establishment and media has towards islam and muslims. The line between majority and minority is defined by beliefs and values NOT skin color. I hope you get the gist i.e don't project khan as the poster boy of tolerance of the liberal secular west. Doing so is deceptive and immoral and reeks of a shameless vile mentality.

According to you muslims can't define who is a muslim and who is not but western goverments can. Typical uncle tom mentality. And yes , logically only muslims get to define who is a muslim , since there is a point of reference i.e the Quran and Sunnah. The term muslim have a definition whether you accept it or not.

SO for BD to get the tolerance certificate from the west , it has to adopt western values and culture? Who get to define the term tolerance?

first of all, its londoners who elected Mr Khan, not 'british' public as such, its a mayoral election. The reason I need to point out, is because london is very different from rest of UK, in the composition of voters.

So true christians and true hindus will find them unelectable, if they dont agree what the electorate believe. Mr Khan himself apparently said(long time ago) that liberal muslims are not true muslims.

Muslims have 0 electoral influence in the west. 10-12% votes is irrelevant when it comes to electing a single post of mayor.

He distanced himself from the beliefs of mainstream muslims and yes he did ridicule islamic beliefs saying that he finds them abhorrent not to mention his comments on niqab. How can muslims getting discriminated against and suffering from Islamophobia in the UK benefit from the statements and election of this "moderate muslim"? Islamophobes will now say - "look this muslim mayor also says there is something wrong with hijab blah blah blah , so lets ban it" . He threw muslims under the bus to get elected.

And the "tolerance" of liberal west is galling. Liberals have certain conditions for tolerance i.e people of other faiths and beliefs have to profess liberal values, otherwise they won't be tolerated. Orthodox jews and christians also find themselves in trouble but their insignificant number keeps them safe but muslims , who are considerable in number , are the ones suffering discrimination ,hatred and demonization by the media.

Sadiq khan mayors election is a huge slap on the faces of jihadi / extremists in the west .. These jihadis / extremists should question muslim countries on the daily persecution of minorities living in their countries ...

How is khan's election a vindication of western "tolerance"? Are you brain dead? And what do muslim countries need to do , to get the tolerance certificate? Hand over power to qadiyanis and allow them to cause instability in the society? Liberals like Khan are already part of the ruling elite of the muslim world.

I think we should add minarets to Saint Paul Cathedral,Westimnster Abbey,Koln Cathedral, dress our women in tents, marry our daughters to 60 year old farts when they're 12.Only than we would be tolerant.

nice, so he's a normal person after all. :)

.
Sadiq Khan is NOT an example that the UK tolerates Muslim values.

How on earth a Muslim can vote for gay marriage is beyond me.:disagree:
He might feel the need to "prove" himself. I can see him for example being harder than Boris on Islamists.
