What's new

Today marks the 221th death anniversary of Sultan Fateh Ali Khan Sahab, also known as Tipu Sultan

. .
One of his jobs ?? Then after his death why did the Wadiyar family ally with the British ?? Actually Mysore state became a vassal of the Britishers.

Actually it happend the other way around.

The British after defeating tipu installed Wadiya BACK as king from the pretender and usurper and promised to protect him and his kingdom.

And unlike Hyder Ali, they actually kept their world.

. . . . . . .
They certainly did a better job than Hyder Ali or Tipu.

More trustworthy too.
The same can be said of Punjab, no?
The Britishers were a net gain for Punjabi Muslims too.
You might want to read up on Maharani Lakshmammanni, the queen who tamed the tiger.
I don't think writing letters is bravery. Britishers and Nizam unseated Tipu.

.
There are the Progressive and sensible Hindus who don't believe in that. They look at his life and times from a nuanced perspective. One such Hindu was the late Girish Karnad who called Tipu as one of the best Kannadigas in 500 years :
Girish was a great artist.

But he did not consider himself as a Hindu.

.
French for example. Dutch ? Portuguese ?

With Tipu gone I don't think the French had any great interest in taking the whole of Mysore kingdom, though maybe they would have some interest in the Mangalore region which had a Catholic Christian population. But maybe the Britishers would have ceded Mangalore had the French bothered to ask.

And I don't think the Danish and the Portuguese had any special interest in taking Mysore.

Nizam of Hyd ?

Nizam's enemy was Tipu and I believe he had no interest in Mysore after Tipu's death.

Maharani was smarter and played Tipu to his death.

Maharani Lakshmammanni addressed a letter to Lord Macartney, Governor of Madras (1781-1785) offering “ ‘to pay one crore or ten millions of Arcot Rupees for the expense of the camp, and grant to the company a Jaghir to the amount of fifteen lakhs per annum, and thirty six lakhs more annually for the payment of the Company’s troops to defend the Kingdom’, if his Lordship would condescend to comply with her agent’s request and help to restore the Kingdom to those to whom it rightfully belonged to.”

She signed a Treaty with the British called ‘The Rana Treaty for the Restoration of the Hindoo Dynasty of Mysore’.

The uniqueness of this treaty was a clause that said ‘If the Company failed to reduce ‘Hyder Naig’ and were obliged to make peace with him, the Company would take over the protection of the loyalists and reimburse them of the money advanced to them’

After Tipu put 700 members of Tirumala Rao’s family and community to death in Srirangapatna, the Mahrani used her agents Tirumala Rao and his brother Narayana Rao campe at Tanjore and then at Coimbatore and provide the information to British about the plans and arrangements made by Tipu against the English.

Tipu was surrounded in Srirangapatana and he sued for peace. General Meadows was all along the course of the war, against the conclusion of war and wanted to capture the fort and restore the old royal family. However Cornwallis was however adamant that Tipu only be disarmed but left alone after giving up half his territory, paying a huge indemnity and offering his sons as hostages so that the power of the Nizam and Marathas could be kept in check. This caused utter disappointment to the MahaRani and her agents.

It was after this Tipu wrote to the French seeking their help as well as to the Turks and Afghan kings for help.

Of course the Rani promptly passed on this message to the British.

When the british realized that Tipu was double crossing them with the french, they attacked him again and this time killed him.

On the 30th June, 1799 the 5 year old boy King Krishnaraja, Khasa Chamarajendra’s son was placed on the throne of Mysore. He was be aided in his duties by Maharani Lakshmammanni who would be his Guardian. A life time of sacrifice and dogged determination by the Queen Mother paid off in the end.

So in the end this Royal widow held in contempt by Tipu, not only managed to win back her kingdom, but also killed Tipu and established a firm base for her son to be king.

Today is a good day to remember our real Heroes. TO know what TRUE WOMEN power looks like.

It is kind of you to fantasize that the Kingdom of Mysore had no enemies. However I would rather trust the judgement of the ruling house of that time, than your assessment. That is the short answer.

Ram punyani
