1st Trans-Earth Injection (TEI) burn:

At 9:54 on 12th December 2020 Beijing Time (01:54 UTC), the Chang'e 5 orbiter after 6 days of parking orbit around the moon, performed the First Trans-Earth Injection (TEI) burn.

This changed the orbit from a near circular lunar orbit to a high elliptical lunar orbit with an apoapsis of 200 kilometers.

The main purpose of the Trans-Earth Injection (TEI) burn is to prepare for the 2nd TEI burn that should take place 24 hours later, sending the spacecraft into a trajectory heading back to Earth, that would end with a landing on Earth by 18th December 2020.

2nd Trans-Earth Injection (TEI) burn

The Chang'e-5 orbiter and return capsule performed the second Trans-Earth Injection (TEI) burn.

At 9:51 on 13th December 2020 Beijing time, the Chang'e-5 orbiter and return capsule carried out the second Trans-Earth Injection (TEI) burn, by successfully firing four 150N engines at a distance of about 230 kilometers from the lunar surface, and burning for about 22 minutes.

After that, the engines were shut down normally. According to real-time telemetry data monitoring, the orbiter and return capsule successfully entered the Trans-Earth Injection trajectory.

According to source, the Chang'e 5 total mass comprising the orbiter and the return capsule, is only about 2 tons, and there are still hundreds of kilograms of liquid propellant left.

Using multiple small engines to ignite at the same time can reduce acceleration, which is helpful to the stability of the spacecraft's complex dynamics system and ensures the accuracy of Trans-Earth Injection (TEI) maneuver.

In the days ahead, the Chang'e-5 orbiter and return capsule carrying the lunar samples will undergo midway orbit corrections (Trajectory Correction Maneuver 4, 5 and 6) and the separation of the return capsule from the orbiter will be carried out at the appropriate time.

Trajectory Correction Maneuver 4 (TCM-4)

BEIJING, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- China's Chang'e-5 probe on Monday completed its first Trajectory Correction Maneuver 4 (TCM-4) en route to Earth, according to the China National Space Administration (CNSA).

The orbital correction was conducted at 11:13 a.m. (Beijing Time) when the two 25N engines of the orbiter burned for about 28 seconds.

The CNSA said all systems on the orbiter with return capsule that carries lunar samples are currently in good condition.

The orbiter with return capsule entered a hyperbolic trajectory after the 2nd Trans-Earth Injection (TEI) burn on Sunday.

When the time is right, the orbiter with return capsule will separate from one another, according to the CNSA. The probe's return capsule is expected to land at the Siziwang Banner in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region on 16th December 2020 between 17:32 - 18:07 UTC.

BEIJING, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- China's Chang'e-5 probe on Monday completed its first Trajectory Correction Maneuver 4 (TCM-4) en route to Earth, according to the China National Space Administration (CNSA).

China's Chang'e-5 probe completed its Trajectory Correction Maneuver 5 (TCM-5) Wednesday morning, according to the China National Space Administration (CNSA).

The orbital correction was conducted at 9:15 Beijing Time (UTC+8) when the two 25N engines on the orbiter-return capsule burned for about eight seconds.

The CNSA said all systems on the orbiter-return capsule are currently in good condition.

The orbiter-return capsule entered the Trans-Earth Injection (TEI) on Sunday and completed its first Trajectory Correction Maneuver (TCM-4) on Monday.

The orbiter-return capsule will separate from one another at the appropriate time, according to the CNSA. The return capsule is expected to land at the Siziwang Banner in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.

Meanwhile, the preset landing site in Siziwang Banner is ready for the homecoming, the mission's search and retrieval team are already on stand by.
