NEW DELHI: A changed global geopolitical context may see the Trump administration pulling a man out of his asylum in the US to be deported to Bangladesh as an alleged conspirator in the plot to kill Sheikh Mujibur Rehman, founding leader of the country and father of PM Sheikh Hasina.
Rashed Chowdhury, a participant in the 1975 coup that assassinated Bangladesh’s first PM, has been granted asylum by US authorities in 2006. But according to US publication Politico US attorney general William Barr has called for documents relating to Chowdhury’s case in June. They quote Chowdhury’s lawyers as saying that the US’ justice department could overturn the judgment and extradite him to Bangladesh.
The Hasina regime has been insistent with the US about Chowdhury’s extradition. Bangladesh foreign minister A K Abdul Momen has raised the issue with every visiting US official. Chowdhury has already been charged and convicted in Bangladesh. In the past few years, the Hasina regime has convicted and executed many of the accused. Rashed Chowdhury would be a high-profile convict.
Bilateral ties between the US and Bangladesh have improved tremendously in the past decade that Hasina has been in power. India has played a role, particularly by example, as India-Bangladesh ties have seen an upswing.
One of the reasons, of course, is a US desire to woo Dhaka to keep it from the clutches of the Chinese, who have been making significant inroads into Bangladesh. And this is probably where India and the US have worked in tandem. It may also see Bangladesh finally getting the US to extradite Chowdhury, and closing a painful chapter in its history.
