Since its birth in 1947, the Republic of India is once again in search of its soul and identity. Then it cast itself as a secular state and its constitution was formed on these very principles. Even as it was doing so, there was a competing ideology – the Hindutva – that rejected secularism and partition of India on communal lines.

The current in-office Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) practices the Hindutva ideology, whose custodian and advocate are the world’s biggest paramilitary non-governmental organization – Rashtriya Sawayamsevak Sangh, with an estimated 6 million volunteers as its members.

Inspired by the rise of ethnic nationalism in Germany and Italy in the interwar period of the last century, the RSS preached promotion and protection of Hindus’ religious, political and cultural interests. It also developed an organized cadre and encouraged violent extremism and terrorism to achieve its objectives.

After decades-long political wilderness, the RSS rose infamously to notoriety because of the assassination of Mr. Gandhi, and later after the demolition of the Babri Mosque, the latter also provided the BJP the fuel for its political ascent. What is evident is that the parchariks (advocates) of both the BJP and the RSS make no secret that their doctrine incites hatred and propagates discrimination, xenophobia, intolerance, and majoritarianism.

I disagree with many Pakistanis who somehow maintain this notion that india was at any time secular and there are sane hindus.

This is horrendously wrong. India was always a loose hindu confederation of ideas well before the British came. Even before, in ancient india or medieval india, the expansionist hindu mentality is a fact of history.
During the british they couldn't do much massacre as the British had interests and frankly they were nicer to muslims because many muslims served in the army.

It was the hindu fascists that wanted partition. Read Lala Lajpat Rai of the anti muslim Arya samaj.
This article also assumes there are sane hindus. Utter non sense.

Muslims are an aberration in their eyes and hence must be removed not only from india but also arabia who they now claim was a hindu society.

You are only fooling yourself if you believe it. Solution is simple and only one. Get economically and militarily strong. The language of muscle will be understood by all.

Secularism can be one of the two:
1. Government gives equal importance to every religion
2. Government give no importance to any religion

India never defined what kind of secularism it wanted to be, so as the country evolved, so did its idea of secularism.

Today, many Hindus and Muslims call themselves as secular. What it means, usually boils to to each individual person and their understanding of religion and secularism. Mostly, it has become a label to signify someone as non-practicing of their birth faith. It does not however mean, that they are supportive of others to practice their faith.

Today however, secularism in India has come to signify as a tool used by the government to give undue preference to Islam and Muslims. That is why it is frowned upon by the SanghiNazis and the word is used with disgust.

Was India ever secular? I do not care.

What I care is whether the country has adequate laws to enforce justice and whether that justice is uniformly applied throughout the country.

We all know the answer to the above. If the laws are there, they are either selectively enforced or no enforced at all. End result is India has become a miserable place for minorities, especially Muslims.

I strongly support a Hindu India. India has always been a Hindu nation for the last 70 years, but under the umbrella of secularism, the minorities lost out, especially the Muslims.

Once this drama of secularism stops, at least the Muslims can start asking for their rights. There is so much hypocrisy in every section of the Indian state and society and I am very happy that at last it is being recognised.
