RAWALPINDI: An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Rawalpindi on Thursday handed 86 workers of the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), including TLP Chief Khadim Hussain Rizvi’s brother and nephew, 55-year sentences each after finding them guilty of terrorism and related charges.

The sentences were handed down for the convicts' participation in violent protests following the acquittal in 2018 of Asia Bibi from the blasphemy case against her, reported The News.

Bibi’s conviction was overturned by Pakistan’s highest court on October 31, 2018. However, she had to be kept in protective custody despite orders of her immediate release due to the threats to her life posed by far-right parties, which had reacted strongly to the Supreme Court's judgement.

The TLP had led days-long protests following the verdict, joined by other religious parties, which had left roads blocked and paralysed routine life in major cities of the country.

Police had rounded up a large number of suspects in the aftermath of those protests.

The verdict in the cases against them was announced late Thursday night by ATC-I Rawalpindi.

Police had arrested the TLP chief along with his brother, nephew and others on November 24, 2018, on charges of creating unrest in the country.

The 86 were charged with damaging public property, beating people up and disrupting normal life by staging sit-ins against Bibi’s acquittal earlier that year.

The court also awarded two years’ imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs50,000 each against Ameer Hussain Rizvi, his son Muhammad Ali, Qari Mushtaq and Gulzar Ahmed after finding them in possession of illegal weapons. In case of non-payment of the fine, the accused will face extra imprisonment of 146 years.

Pir Ejaz Ashrafi, a senior TLP leader, told the Associated Press that the sentences would be appealed.

"Justice has not been done," Ashrafi told AP. "We will challenge the verdicts."

Terrorism? How so?
The Pakistan government and courts need to ban those organisations and arrest those people who have been supporting terrorists and terrorism in Pakistan since 1980s. Those who are responsible for the killing of 60 000 people and 5000 army jawans, those who call Pakistan army officers as not martyrs, who call them mushrikeen but they are roaming free and still get foreign fundings. Hypocrisy as usual from Pakistan courts

this decision will make them hero among their followers like mumtaz qadri

Stupidity. Yes these people should be locked up for violent protests or rioting but terrorism and 55 years?!

Hopefully his platelets can withstand the bad news.

but terrorism
terrorism by definition is threatening or committing violence for political objectives.

dictionary said:
unlawful use of violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political aims is terrorism

What about that one with thr black turban? He needs life sentence, too.

The sentencing is outrageous and not proportional to the crimes committed. I know many people who support this group and they won't be silenced.

That's fcking
We first need to redefine terrorism
Dr. Abdul qadir khan was also a terrorist? May be
We all need to ask ourselves where are we heading
This will cost us more then any thing
Our people are suiciding to get comfort under the crust and these guys are again creating a riot
Really they are fuking
Bitchs of riches

55 years is too much. I think it will get reduced in appeal.

Personally I believe any one found intimidating, harassing and propagating violent acts should be shot on sight. but I will settle for 50 years sentence .

but where is Dharana criminals who attack PTV, national assembly, etc. but there ......................
