ToI and idiotic masala! How it any way linked with AK-47? It may have same magazine so the AK bullets can be used.

Location of the charging handle, the placement of the safety indicates a AK mechanism inside. Also the indentation over the magazine well.

A gun enthusiast can tell you better though.

Yep it does look like it, but has a banana clip in place of a STANAG.

They say it's like a 'desi AK', but it looks like a heavily modified FAL. India have been license producing the FALs for many years, so this isn't a surprise it's inspired by the FAL.

Here is a modified FAL.

Trichy looks more compact than this. INSAS was never suitable for counter-insurgency. This could be a local solution, instead of getting AKs from Eastern Europeans and Russians.

I feel like pretty much every homemade firearms made in India have borrowed from the FAL. Small or large contribution.
