I'm not sure I quite understand what you are saying, are you saying that it would be better not to sell the entire TikTok app and instead sell off their branch in just the US under a different name? That is not a good idea, if they do so then the American TikTok (even if they change the name) may grow more popular world wide than the Chinese TikTok and thus China would lose the only Chinese social media app that was successful outside of China, at that point don't be surprised if the American TikTok would operate worldwide and start promoting anti China content just like Twitter, Google etc..
The American market is not worth risking having another anti China social media app going global, now obviously Zhang Yiming probably doesn't give a flying F about China's security, he just wants to make some money, which is why the Chinese government should step in and prevent him from doing that.

US investors try to buy TikTok from Chinese owner
A group of US tech investors has launched an ambitious plan to buy TikTok from its Chinese owner, as the popular short video app tries to escape being banned by the White House.
The investors, led by the venture capital firms General Atlantic and Sequoia Capital, are in discussions with the US Treasury and other regulators to see if spinning out TikTok and firewalling it from its Chinese parent would satisfy US concerns about the app, according to two people involved in the process.
Last weekend, President Donald Trump’s election campaign placed ads on Facebook suggesting that TikTok was “spying” on US users, a claim the company has denied. Other critics have noted the app’s huge influence as it sits on the mobile phones of tens of millions of Americans.
After the buyout, ByteDance, the Beijing-headquartered company that currently owns TikTok as well as its mainland Chinese sister app, Douyin, would retain a minority stake in the international business, with non-voting shares, according to one of the people involved.
“This is the only viable plan,” the person said. The Information first reported some of the details of the buyout talks.

Chinese complaints on the banning of their apps are falling on deaf years, especially in the US. No sympathy for them at all.
When I first encountered TikTok it was used mainly by teenage girls. Now it seems to have spread to millennials, who have a lot of time on their hands. I'm trying to reduce my social media presence as it is, I don't need another one.

If American apps can substitute tit tok so easily, they would have done it already. I think what ByteDance sells is its users and platform in US. Without ByteDance technical support, American version tik tok can not compete with real tik tok in other countries.
