Tigers launched an encouraging world cup campaign on Saturday as they handed Canada a nine-wicket defeat in the first warm-up match at Zohur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong.

A resolved Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes, the openers, executed their duties unfalteringly after the bowlers ripped through the Canadian batting line-up conceding only 112 runs. The guests struggled on the crease for a good score but the Tigers did not let them a good footing. Canada lost all the wickets in just 37.3 overs.

Tamim and Imrul chose shots meticulously. And this paid off: Bangladesh reached the target in just 19.2 overs.

In his as-usual-devastating style, Tamim hammered a 69-run inning of 50 balls. He hit three over boundaries and seven boundaries before falling prey to Rizwan Cheema. He was bowled when the scoreboard was showing 106.

The other opener, Imrul, contributed 39 off 57 balls to register the massive win. He hit five boundaries.

Junaid Siddique faced only nine balls and remained not out for 1.

Winning the toss earlier, the hosts opted to field first.

Right-arm fast-medium bowler Shafiul proved economic as he did not give any run in his first four balls.

His fifth ball gave the Tigers occasion to celebrate. Hiral Patel managed to hit the ball but failed to hit it with enough strength to send beyond the reach of the fielder standing there. Junaid Siddique took the catch to send him to the pavilion.

R Gunasekera, who joined the other opener, JM Davison, later started swing his bat powerfully and managed to score three boundaries. But the sixth ball, a delivery from Rubel Hossain, was different: it did not go the way he was expecting. Skipper Shakib Al Hasan took it with ease to send him back.

Ashish Bagai was the next man to the crease.

As Canada reached 22, Davison faltered at the hands of Shafiul. He too gave a catch and Abdur Razzak was fully prepared to take it. He managed to score two runs.

Jimmy Hansra was the fourth man to return to the pavilion. This time Naeem Islam attacked successfully to generate a catch for Rubel Hossain. He scored 22 runs, which include an over-boundary and two boundaries, off 38 balls.

Ashish Bagai, Rizwan Cheema, Surkari and Whatham failed to add much run before they were sent back.

Mahmudullah bowled Bagai in his fourth ball in the 26th over. He hit again with the next ball, bowling out Rizwan. However, the chance of a hat-trick eluded him narrowly.

Bangladesh skipper Shakib took the ball to add more injuries to Canadian innings, removing Surkari and Whatham.

Nitish Kumar was the ninth wicket to fall. Rubel Hossain bowled him.

Shakib put the final nail on Canadian innings coffin tricking Whatham in a leg before.

Led by Shakib Al Hasan, the Bangladesh team includes Abdur Razzak, Imrul Kayes, Junaid Siddique, Mahmudullah, Mohammad Ashraful, Mushfiqur Rahim, Naeem Islam, Nazmul Hossain, Raqibul Hasan, Rubel Hossain, Shafiul Islam, Shahriar Nafees, Suhrawadi Shuvo and Tamim Iqbal.

Canada squad: Ashish Bagai, HS Baidwan, WD Balaji Rao, JM Davison, PA Desai, TG Gordon, R Gunasekera, Hamza Tariq, AS Hansra, Khurram Chohan, NR Kumar, H Osinde, H Patel, Rizwan Cheema, ZE Surkari and K Whatham.

Canada is a mino , it will be interesting to see how Bangladesh performs against major teams .so far after achieving the test cricket status Bangladesh is the poorest performing team among all test playing nations, though they have beaten the major teams but only once in a blue moon .

They have talent in some players but consistency is what they lack . in many games i have observed that some of there players fought but remaining just put their heads down pre-deciding that they are not gonna win the match ,they have to come-up with something good in this WC

Ashraful and Tamim Iqbal are talented players but the problem is Tamim doesnot get much support from the other end and Ashraful often throw his wicket away by playing rash cricket ,that is something they have to work hard if they want to advance in this WC

.
We will know if Bangladesh really improve if we play good game against Pakistan in 15 February.

.
19 February Bangladesh vs India. I hope Bangladesh repeats what they did to India in 2007. And it's in Dhaka :woot:

WHy Mashrafe did not seriously take care of himself from long time ago? Without him our pace attack seems to me very weak.

BTW, i am disappointed that no channel is broadcasting the practice matches of Bangladesh...at least here in Dubai, i get Channel I and they aint participating...

CricOne is showing India's practice matches...we should have done something as well...

It is not a good idea to play an unfit Mashrafe...better would be to utilize Shafiul/Rubel/Nazmul who are currently on song...

Moreover, this WC will be ruled by spinner...hands down...! Just see the highlights how India defeated Australlia, defending 214 with their spinners...!

Cheers!!!

.
WIll be looking forward to see the best performance of Bangladesh. But, will stay on their side whatever happens.
