K P Sharma Oli: “Once we had stressful relations with India, but that stage is now over.”

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s two-day visit to Nepal was highly successful and has taken bilateral ties to new heights, Nepal Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli said yesterday.
Oli made the remarks in parliament while informing members about Modi’s visit.
An environment was created to take forward Nepal-India relations based on mutual benefit, Oli said, while claiming that national interests were kept in mind while dealing with India and no compromise will be made.
“Once we had stressful relations with India, but that stage is now over,” the prime minister said. “We have mended fences ... There will be no more blockade from the Indian side in future.”
On Saturday, Modi had tweeted: “My Nepal visit was historic. It gave me a great opportunity to connect with the wonderful people of Nepal.”
Modi’s latest visit was the third to Kathmandu in four years, coming in the backdrop of a six-month blockade on Nepal-India border as well as a Left victory in Nepal’s
elections.
The “stressed situation” that led to the blockade three years ago and hurt bilateral relations have now turned harmonious, Oli said.
Echoing Modi’s statement that India respected the sovereignty and integrity of Nepal, Oli said that bilateral relations should be based on equality and India’s support will be received as per Nepal’s needs.
Oli told lawmakers that discussions and agreements inked will benefit both countries.
Oli said that projects on which both countries will co-operate were related to road and railways, waterways, integrated security check-posts, transmission lines and petroleum pipelines.
“The prime minister of India and I have agreed ... to address in a time-bound manner the outstanding issues between our two countries. This will further strengthen Nepal-India relations,” Oli tweeted.
Oli and Modi have agreed to resolve all outstanding issues by September 19, the day marking the promulgation of the new constitution in Nepal.
On Saturday, Prime Minister Oli told Modi that Nepal’s territory will not be used against New Delhi’s interests, Indian Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale said.
“Oli reiterated that they will be sensitive to our concerns and their territory will not be allowed to be used by anybody against India. Prime Minister Modi reciprocated the sentiments,” Gokhale told the media.
Gokhale called Oli’s view “very significant”.
He said that Modi’s two-day visit to Nepal was aimed to strengthen bilateral relations “whether it be cross-border electricity or cross-border connectivity”.
“We are looking into cross-border electricity and cross-border connectivity not only with Nepal but other neighbouring countries as well,” he said.
After assuming office in February, Oli made his first foreign visit to India in April.
According to Gokhale, Oli confirmed to Modi that Nepal will host the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (Bimstec) summit this year.
Bimstec comprises seven countries lying in the littoral and adjacent areas of the Bay of Bengal – Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand.
Gokhale also said that Modi’s visits to cultural sites in Nepal “suggested that there should be strong people-to-people ties”.

And your point is? Top Indian military officials have visited China and Afghanistan, as well as all the Central Asian and Southeast Asian countries, Looks like a lot of countries don't want to be cornered by China either.
BTW, does Pakistan or China have an agreement with Nepal like this?

They did. Nepal just refused to follow up.

Nepal is a sovereign nation... I never understand why they can't have better relations with both India and China... every nation has natural right to take advantage of the best deal available...

That is exactly what they are trying to do- utilize Indian and Chinese investment to improve the lives of its people. Currently PM Oli is taking advantage of the Indo-China rivalry to get more from both countries, which is exactly what he should do. Despite what some Pakistanis are saying, it would be suicide for Nepal to completely dump India, because Nepal is landlocked and India provides Nepal's closest access to deep-sea ports, Not to mention, even with all the railroads and tunnels it can build, China cannot change the fact that it is separated from Nepal by the Himalayas, whereas Nepal has an open border with India. That is why India is still Nepal's largest trade partner, and the proposed Dehli-Nepal rail link will only increase Indian trade with Nepal.

Because the indians are insecure princesses

Nepal is trying its best to have a balanced relationship with all that benefits nepal

However india has a full on *** heart attack, a *** attack if you will when regional countries reach out to anyone especially China

India then attempts to huff and puff and push out its chest all the time indian fanboys call for boycotts, invasions and nuclear holocausts

Maldives is getting the indian insecure princess treatment at the moment

That sounds like your reaction whenever India builds a dam or opens an embassy in Afghanistan, or develops a port in Iran.

Last time I heard about retaliation by using nukes was from Khawaja Muhammad Asif... when he reacted to a fake news related to Israel...

For Maldives, Indian officials have asked Nasheed to put a fullstop on all Chinese activities... but he refused to ASSURE Indian officials on that... thus, no DIRECT interference...
Also, currently we don't have a sickular government to waste time and resources on such nation...

Now don't ask me to explain "such"... you might end up calling me religiously biased person...

I don't know. Oli does not seem to be very stable in his seat. Without any firm rule of law, Nepal is always swinging like a pendulum. The country was really wrong at accusing us despite India being the first to help them in their worst time.

Cordial ties with them are good because many of our people have families across the border. But anything closer should be seen with caution.

What's happening is Oli is figuring out the way things work. All that anti-India rhetoric may have worked during elections, but the harsh truth is Nepal simply cannot survive without India. Just look at the population density of the areas of India bordering Nepal, and compare with the areas of China bordering Nepal. Currently, I think Oli is doing a good job of balancing India and China. Now all we need to do is step up investment in Nepal. Finishing that rail link would be a good start. If we don't invest in Nepal, we only have ourselves to blame.
