Tianjin blasts: Nation hails firefighting heroes

Chinese citizens have been hailing the brave firefighters who have been battling the blaze in the aftermath of the deadly warehouse blasts in Tianjin late on Wednesday night.

Already the death toll from the tragedy stands at 50, including 17 firefighters who sacrificed their lives helping the victims. Over a dozen more of them are unaccounted for, and many are being treated at hospitals among the nearly 701 people who were injured in the blasts.

As of Thursday evening, six of the firemen who've died in the line of duty have been identified by the authorities. The youngest of them is only 18 years old, while the oldest is 30. One of them had just got married 12 days ago.

These men were among the 19 firefighters who rushed to the site immediately after the initial explosion, only to encounter a second blast. Some of them were instantly trapped, while others suffered severe burns.

As of Thursday afternoon, a total of 143 fire trucks and more than 1,000 firemen are said to have been dispatched to the site, and eight fire trucks have reportedly been destroyed as the rescue efforts continue.

A screenshot of a conversation on a Chinese messaging application WeChat went viral online on Thursday. "If I don't make it back, treat my dad as yours," one fireman wrote to his friend, while he was on the way to the blast site.

Fortunately, the firefighter did return safely. It is dedication as this that has moved people on social media in the country.

Not yet. Investigation is underway. But they have to approach very carefully because fresh fires might erupt. it is an all-out effort, from chemical units to health experts.

China shuts down entertainment for Tianjin blast

Premieres and press conferences for new films have been canceled while celebrities including Jackie Chan and Angelababy have donated funds to aid the families of the firemen who fell victim to the deadly Tianjin blasts on Wednesday night.

Blasts near the world's fourth-largest port on Aug. 12 killed at least 50 people and injured hundreds according to the latest available information. The blasts caused millions of dollars in damage, burning cargo, turning nearby buildings and parked automobiles into charred shells and shattering windows several kilometers away.

The producers of "The Third Way of Love" canceled its planned premiere on Thursday. The stars of the film and new love couple -- South Korean actor Song Seung Heon and Chinese actress Liu Yifei -- briefly took to stage to bow and pay tribute to victims and fireman. Liu, in tears, said she was shocked to hear the news and that people should focus on the Tianjin accident rather than a film. They apologized to fans and media and swiftly left.

The urban comedy "Ex File 2" also canceled a scheduled press conference in the wake of the disaster. The producers, Huayi Bros. Media Corp., said they would reschedule the press conference for a later date, but, meanwhile, they are praying with others for Tianjin.

The teenage pop group TFBOYS also postponed their new song release and canceled their meet-and-greet event with fans on Friday.

Actors and producers of "Go Away Mr. Tumor", which debuted in Chinese theaters on Thursday, also sent their special prayers, noting that the film is also about how to deal with life and death. The leading actress Fay Bai, director Han Yan and actor Daniel Wu attended a meet-and-greet event in a theater in Guangzhou, dismissed talk about box office success to focus on their thoughts of life and love.

Meanwhile, Bill Kong's Edko Films, which has produced the latest highest grossing Chinese film ever "Monster Hunt," announced a 5 million yuan (US$781,500) donation to families of firemen who died in the blasts. A total of 17 firemen have been confirmed dead. The youngest was barely 18 years old.

Jackie Chan and other stars followed suit. Chan announced he would donate three million yuan (US$468,900), while actor Huang Xiaoming and his wife, actress Angelababy, said they would donate two million yuan (US$312,600). Actresses Fan Bingbing, Zhang Xinyu, actor Li Chen, singer Han Geng and many other celebrities also pledged millions of yuan in donations and sent their prayers.

Tianjin Satellite TV networks also canceled several entertainment shows on Thursday and Friday, as well as several commercials. Beijing Satellite TV and Shenzhen Satellite TV among others are also planned to suspend entertainment shows and focus on Tianjin blasts aftermath instead.
