Martyred cop ‘actually fell victim to road accident’
LAHORE: The Lahore police 'falsely' dubbed the death of a 27-year-old constable as murder and 'immediately' booked PAT chief Dr Tahirul Qadri and his unknown supporters in a murder case on Saturday last.
A police handout issued on Sunday also declared the constable as martyr and his funeral prayers were offered at the Qilla Gujjar Singh Police Lines with police guard of honour.
Muhammad Ashraf, who was deputed on security duty of banking court judge Ahmad Nawaz Ranjha, had met a road accident near Arfa Karim Tower on Aug 8 evening and was admitted to Lahore General Hospital with a head injury where he expired on Saturday last. As he expired at the hospital in evening hours, police officers started linking his death to police-PAT clashes and eventually Naseerabad police lodged a murder case against Dr Qadri and his activists on the report of victim's father.
It was later transpired that Ashraf of Narowal died of a head injury he suffered in a road accident.
According to a source in the LGH, Ashraf was brought to the hospital with multiple head injuries.
He told Dawn that paramedics detected no marks of torture on Ashraf's body, saying the medical report was issued with road accident-related injuries. The Punjab government, which had already announced Rs10 million compensation for each police martyr, made waste no time in declaring Ashraf as martyr.
DIG Dr Haider Ashraf said police had initially received an application from victim's father Muhammad Aslam who stated that he rushed to the LGH on a phone call that his son, who was attacked by PAT activists near Model Town courts, suffered wounds.
Aslam later submitted an application to the Naseerabad police against PAT chairman Dr Tahirul Qadri and his supporters.
Acting Capital City Police Officer Zulfiqar Hameed said police had registered a case on the application of the victim's father, but the outcome of the post-mortem examination and detailed investigation would establish the exact cause of death.
