Tibetan intangible cultural heritage to be better protected
"I believe in the future, the intangible cultural heritage (ICH) of the Tibetan as well as other ethnic minorities will all be better protected and inherited," said Cai Wu, Minister of Culture at the 44th reception of the China Journalism Association on Jan.10.
He also said that since the "Law on Intangible Cultural Heritage of the People's Republic of China" was issued on June 1, 2011, China has made a great achievement in the protection of intangible cultural heritage. It marks a milestone in the history of China's ICH protection and rule of law in cultural undertaking. In the meanwhile, it has also established systematic protective measures including rescuing and production.
The Regong Art of Huangnan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in northwest China's Qinghai Province listed in June 2006 in the first batch of the state-level ICH Protection was a good example of the measure China has adopted, Cai Wu said.
According to the White Paper of Tibet's Development and Progress issued by the Information Office of China's State Council on Oct. 22, 2013, up to now Tibet boasts 800 ICH projects, 80 traditional opera performing institutions and 1,177 inheritors. Among all the ICH items, the Tibetan Opera and the Epic of King Gesar have been listed in the World Intangible Cultural Heritage by the United Nations Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organizaiton, 75 items including Thangka and Tibetan paper-making have been included in the state-level ICH list, 68 people recognized as the state-level inheritors, as well as 323 items and 227 inheritors in the regional-level list. Besides, 158 ancient books have been encompassed as the state-level precious ancient books.
