Three leopards 'poisoned', killed in Abbotabad

cats are supremely respected in islami history... hazrat muhammad was a great admirer of cats and the following history saw the traditional west-asian/african respect for the cat continued in muslim societies
Thanks for info.. I don't know that.Still, I think saving animal is responsibility of all human..irrespective of religion.

No, its not the national animal. Markhor is.

It's not the peoples job to take care of the leopards. They have more important things to worry about, like surviving.

The Markhor is the main one. The snow leopard is the national heritage animal though. Pakistan is the only country where the animal has been extensively filmed.

the snow leopard has been called a national heritage animal of Pakistan

It is the people's job to follow basic principles of faith and morality. Killing endangered animals is violating both. I've travelled quite extensively in Africa, and seen poverty that hopefully no Pakistani will ever see. Those folks don't go about killing wildlife, even though they had animals taken from them. They create simple traps with fireworks, dress up dummies and erect simple barriers.

Poor animals. They are victims of sick Pakistani society. These beautiful creatures don't deserve this treatment.
it happens quite often in India for exactly same reason, poor villagers got sick of wild animals destroying crops/livestock, and kill them.

kisne kaha tha unko ki ghareebi ki zindagi jiyen??
HAHA. That takes the stupid statement of the year reward.

Poverty is not a lifestyle choice.
I think somehow some of Antoinette's genes leaked into you.

It's not the national animal of Pakistan. Period.

Yes, but that doesn't mean they don't have the right to protect their property and livestock. It's governments job to protect them, and if their livestock is lost, to recompense them. As neither is being implemented, people are forced to take things into their own hand. Believe me, i feel just as bad as anyone else over the loss of these majestic animals, but i won't blame the poor farmers for it.

hardly... i am socialist, so i am concerned about the entire ecology.

Poverty is not a lifestyle choice.

it is, for lot of the south asian masses... they would rather do prayers and continue their poverty for two generations than ever think about revolution... south asia has more useless males than real men.

Yes, but that doesn't mean they don't have the right to protect their property and livestock.

yeah... they dare not protest injustice and their poverty but dare to poison cats... i would rather put a bullet in such nalayak nikamme excuses for men.

These leopards attack kids i dont think its fair for the authorities to expect villagers to spare the animals that attack their children

they don't, unless provoked... please go to the "whatever" thread and see my posts from yesterday about how dogs have in recent years terrorized india... that is the real issue.

Look the locals do get attacked the media just doesnt highlight it

This topic has touched some raw nerves among a few members of the forum. I sympathize with both parties. While leopards have to be protected so does the livestock of the poor farmers. It is a dilemma without a clear cut solution acceptable to all.
Slightly off topic I have another story to tell. Some years ago a leopard came to Margalla hills near the zoo called Marghazar because there was a female leopard inside. That leopard did cause some damage to people and livestock as reported in the newspapers of that time. Then the concerned authorities built a trap for the leopard. As I frequently go for walks in the Margalla hills, one day I took a less frequented track and saw the trap. It was a cage with some meat inside. It scared me as I realized that the leopard must be close by. I stopped hiking after that as I did not want to become food for the leopard. Then one day I read in the newspaper that the leopard has been the caught alive by the concerned authorities. After that I took a sigh of relief and started hiking once again without any fear.I hope it was a happy ending for the leopard as it must have been united with the female after which it came to Margalla hills. The price paid by the leopard was the loss of it's freedom.
This is my version of the story. Could some one from CDA/ Wildlife department give their version of this story.
