Protesters are chanting slogans against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi

Thousands of protesters have taken out a rally in London to express solidarity with the people of Indian-occupied Kashmir, as a crippling lockdown imposed by the Indian government in the occupied region since revoking its special status entered its 30th day on Tuesday.

More than 5,000 protesters assembled at Parliament Square in the UK capital and marched to the Indian High Commission to protest Kashmiris' oppression at the hands of Indian security forces.

A number of local and Kashmiri organisations had called on activists and supporters from all over England to come to London and join the protest against the revocation of Article 370 of the Indian constitution, which granted special autonomy to occupied Kashmir.

Protesters carrying placards and banners chanted slogans against the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government in India. Some protesters also reportedly hurled eggs and tomatoes at the high commission's building.

A heavy contingent of police was deployed at the scene to prevent any violence.

The Indian government had imposed a strict lockdown and communications blackout in occupied Kashmir just before it repealed Article 370 of the constitution on August 5. Extra troops were posted in the region, which is already heavily militarised, and Kashmiri leaders and activists were arrested.

The lockdown and communications blackout is still in place after one month, despite the Indian government's claim of having eased some restrictions.

Great, capitals should be bring to stand still. As the govt is sleeping and providing more and more time to terrorist bharti regime.

This is impressive. Now india will taste how real diplomacy can affect. No wonder india invested in nawaz and zardari as those corrupt puppets were silent about kashmir. One year of imran khan and india already surprised.

Why inconvenience the ordinary public? It will make the protestors look bad, hence helping bjp narrative.

The attack comes days after India raised concerns regarding the protests outside the Indian High Commission on August 15 in the UK.

On August 15, thousands of people, many waving Pakistani and Kashmiri flags, protested outside the Indian High Commission in London over the Indian government’s decision to abrogate Article 370 and bifurcate the state into two Union Territories.

Protesters carried banners saying “Kashmir is Burning”, “Free Kashmir” and “Modi: Make Tea Not War”, according to a Reuters report.

Violent clashes were reported from outside the Indian High Commission when thousands of people converged there for pre-planned protests and counter-demonstrations.

The anti-India protest was organised by Pakistani groups as well as Sikh and Kashmiri separatist outfits over the government’s decision on Jammu and Kashmir.

Following India’s move on Kashmir, Pakistan decided to downgrade diplomatic relations with India over the Kashmir move. It expelled Indian High Commissioner Ajay Bisaria and suspended trade with India.

In a series of retaliatory measures, Islamabad suspended the Samjhauta Express and Thar Express services operating between Pakistan and India.
