That would reduce the purpose of silk route as a security backup, not a major economic pipeline. In addition, if the silk route is mainly used to connect China and Europe, it would constantly be under threat of being disrupted by the Muslim world in the middle, like what happened after the fall of Mongol Empire, which forced European to seek the sea route.
