What's new

They call us SPETSNAZ!

You have no idea what you are talking about have you? A moment ago, you thought it was the king who signed the treaty and now all of a sudden you know the Afghan parliament of before you were even born! Please quote a link stating that the Afghan Parliament of 1978 was brought in with chances of corruption?

The reason was the public pressure back home and a stark realization that the Soviet Industrial Enterprise, which had been thought to be recession proof, was unable to sustain the war in Afghanistan.

sir soviet union wanted to get to warm waters....our integrity was at stake....soviet union was allied with india and we lost bengal............the same soviet union remains landlocked in winters.....they wanted access to warm waters......throughout history as is evident from crimean wars they wanted access to bosphorous sea.........soviet union had imperial goals...the way it annexed foreign territory after ww2 proves it.............also we were shooting down their intruding planes...every now and then.......why?cause they were a threat to us.

correct me if i am wrong but you are giving this impression that soviet union was an innocent socialist lady who came to afghanistan for sight seeing and got molested by thugs....

sir soviet union wanted to get to warm waters....our integrity was at stake....

That is not relevant to the discussion.

soviet union was allied with india and we lost bengal............

Not surprising as we were allied with the US.

Rather, we were a threat to them. We jumped in a war that had nothing to do with us.

correct me if i am wrong but you are giving this impression that soviet union was an innocent socialist lady who came to afghanistan for sight seeing and got molested by thugs....

Not exactly, I am suggesting that they came with noble intentions but were instead trapped in a situation they never expected to find themselves in.

after 20 years you will say war on terror was not our war...we jumped into it...just like i and imran khan say now.....

who should we trust?

let the young generation jugde how much noble soviet union's intention was.btw central asian states werent interested to be a part of soviet union either.

soviet union lost 6,000,000(central asian states) square kilometers and we lost 147,000(bangal) square kilometers......thats close enough .....its 1-1......lets move on and do business now.

Regarding this "Warm water port" theory... I have heard it a number of times, but dont actually understand it properly..How come invasion of Afghanistan helps the Soviets in accessing the warm water ports ? Afghanistan is a landlocked country.
If you are saying that Soviets wanted to invade Afghanistan and Pakistan both in order to access a port then it seems way too un-realistic.Its a matter of simple maths. The cost of invading two countries is way higher than the benefits that one port might provide.

Sir, this is not a footie match. War on Terror is a noble thing, likewise Soviet had the same intention. They were trapped in wrong situation, similar with Indian IPKF and Pakistan against TTP. I hope it is not hard to understand that much.

Icarus, amazing knowledge, thanks a lot sir.

You really need to learn a lot about Cold War... Soviet Union was not occupying Afghanistan. The Soviet Forces had come to assist a fellow communist nation. Such was the norm those days. Soviet Union was not eager to come Afghanistan. So, this warm water theory propagated by Zia did immense damage to your then prospering country. if You are a part of this war on terror, the same propaganda of Zia-ul-Haq is to be blamed. His craving for legitimacy sucked Pakistan to this CIA operation.

In '82 Brezhnev died and this had a huge effect on the functioning of State. A lot of power struggle happened in next few years. Andropov and Chernakov ruled for brief and Finally Gorbachev became the head. Economy had already started going downhill.

Spending was outstripping the income and in the meantime Gorbachev started his reforms. Soviet Union never recovered and this was the reason for Soviet disintegration. Afghanistan was just one of the factors.

Contrary to what some may say, the Chechens, just like the Taliban, give it as good as they get it. I say this knowing about the Taliban operations against our own troops in Pakistan (and the involvement of Chechens in some of these) and elsewhere. The Chechens are no pushovers. This has been proven in both of the Russian wars in Chechnya. In built up combat, the Chechens held out agains the best the Russians could throw at them in both wars. They conducted tactical withdrawals against superior firepower from air and armour but still remain a force to reckon with in Chechnya.

Only the first Chechn war was a disaster. The second war nearly resulted in extinction of Chechens thanks to Khattab and his bunch of loonies. Hiding among the mountains, holding school kids and unarmed civilians and hostage is no sign of a warrior; it is cowardice and that is what jehadis are. They don't have the guts to face armed forces head on so they use innocent, untrained and unarmed people as bargaining chips.

Chechen militants did it, Taliban did it and no other jehadi group does anything different.

Praising such people is a dishonor to all those who died fighting them valiantly; including your own soldiers.

Nobody sympathize the LTTE ...........We sent IPKF to fight them ......

But tamilians in TN sympathise with tamilians in SL ...........

.
You should see SSG exercises @ Attock! :D

Sorry Sir but lets not compare here...Spetsnaz is one the the best SF in the world.SSG till now hasnt done anything to be considered in that list..winning a few competitions doesnt mean you are the best.Regarding military excercises they are not the right test to judge a SF.

A Special Force become special only if it has done the missions in the past...Showing stunts with rock music on youtube doesnt prove a thing.

@ offtopic:
Get ur facts rite... more than 1000 indian troops died fighting LTTE. We lost one our PM's to them. No one sympathies with LTTE's ideology or their fighting style.

But many Indians do think SL tamilians need to be treated better by their sinhalese counterparts.

You must have missed the part of the SSG conducting operations in Waziristan and Swat against one of the most ruthless and battle hardened enemy. They have been used extensively to hit the enemy behind the enemy lines and they have done a very fine job at this. I for one would state that the Spetnaz are better than SSG because of the extensive experience they have. In this line of work, experience matters and the Spetnaz have encountered combat in all parts of the world. But that being said, the Spetnaz don't have the same level of responsibility that the SSG have. Not only are they responsible to deal with external threats, they are also tasked with keeping domestic security and VIP protection.

off topic: Why they died? whom invited Indian troops in SL at first place? what was the purpose of that deployment? what they did there? . Rajiv weren't the PM that time, they assassinated EX PM. Many tamils having sympathies towards LTTE even now. I agree with last part.

I can understand your patriortism but if you had a neutral approach you wont include them with the best.

The role of a SF unit around the world is for doing Special Ops and not VIP security and most nations have different units for it while you can show favourism in your approach but while counter arguing i can also state that it doesnt have specific roles.

To be considered among the best the SF should have the operational experience..the success to prove its point. It should not only be superior with training but on technology and reach too...Would the Osama raid have been possible if the US didnt use the technology it did?..Rambo stuff is good for movies not real life.

And lastly the politicians should be willing to use them for special missions coz thats where the mandate comes from.

We have to do a lot more to be considered the best in the business tbh...Showing favourism and all wont lead to anything sensible.I could have easily countered your comment by sharing an SSG operation with Indian Light Infantry but it wont lead to anything.
