What's new

These 5 far-out space projects are making science fiction a reality

At present form, batteries are out of question. My ex-lecturer is working on Carbon Nanotube enhanced super capacitors in his PhD. That opens up many possibilities. And on earth, grid is the only solution.
Yeah....I have also heard of it. It will be practical solution till we get better devices which can be produced at massive scale.

You know, what'd be a game changer? Small room sized cold fusion reactors.

Even on the event horizon, Einsteins laws are invalid. And as per the latest studies, even Schrodinger's equation is defunct in certain discrete conditions.

Yes I know but warp drive does not attempt to break Einstiein's law instead it works around it by space-time compression expansion.

Now you are talking. There is a renewed interest in cold fusion lately:)

I developed an interest in it lately, but without much knowledge to comment further. Would have liked to study more on the subject, but presently my grades are kicking me, so don't have much spare time.

Yup. There are many contestants. But all cant get enough funding for research and development.
I like to study about new avenues of energy like you mentioned, about harnessing electricity from lightening but I diverted my attention to more practical solutions for time being.

If you have time, we can discuss something which I have been thinking and I think you can come up with solution or you may know about some research already going on in that field. Only when you get time.

I have a solution for everything. :P

Even if you have relationship problem with your girlfriend, seek my advice. :D

If you have the interest, study nanotechnology. You'd be amazed by the possibilities it have. Last day i had a presentation on 'MEMS based Solar Harvesting', using the IR spectrum of the solar radiation to generate electricity using Piezoelectric property of PZT. And it's cheaper to fabricate than Photovoltaic cells and can be used in tandem with existing PV Cells, where it'd take the thermal energy from solar cells and generate electricity.

By this method, we can have a efficiency of around 40%, making solar energy cheapest of all existing power sources. Current efficiency is around 10-15%.

Also nanotechnology in terms of isolating plant proteins responsible for photosynthesis and using that principle in solar energy.

Nanotechnology in terms of medicine, agriculture, military.

I've also heard carbon nanotubes are candidates for using in the construction of space elevators

When this happens, it will have a massive impact on the international politics, economics, and balance of power, much beyond the scope of an efficient sustainable power source.

There are many energy generating policy and increasing efficiency patents filed, but one wonders why those have not implemented.

Seems like a global conspiracy or something.

Well, companies involved in fossil fuels for instance.

*cough* BP *cough*

Has anyone read about the crazy Japanese idea of using superconductors to generate magnetic field on Mars and Moon, enabling them to sustain an atmosphere.

Epitome of Terraforming, if you guys are interested.
Why don't we just set of nukes in the core in a sequence to get the core started =)

But seriously, a planetwide magnetic field?! How powerful a reactor would you need for something like this?

It'd be Graphene, strongest material known to mankind.

Work on dark energy and dark matter is interesting to me. The implication that 96% of the universe is made up of stuff we don't know.

Wonder if a civilisation could tap into that
