23 Russian diplomats to be expelled from UK

Prime Minister Theresa May says the Russian state was culpable in the nerve agent attack in Salisbury on former Russian double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia and is expelling 23 diplomats.

"All who been identified as undeclared intelligence officers. They have just one week to leave," she says.

"This will be the single biggest expulsion for over 30 years and it will reflect the fact that this is not the first time the Russian state has acted against our country."

She says Russia's response "has shown complete disdain for the gravity of these events" and the country has offered no explanation for the Russian-made novichok nerve agent used in the attack.

The PM says the matter has been treated with "sarcasm, contempt and defiance".

"It must be met with a full and robust response," she says.

"We've agreed immediate actions to dismantle the Russian espionage network in the UK."

She says no ministers or members of the Royal Family will be attending this summer's World Cup.

Russia had neither motive nor means nor opportunity to poison Sergei Skripal. Russia destroyed its chemical weapons last year, US failed to do so. US also had access to substance allegedly used to poison Skripal:

US also had a motive (revenge). AFAIK Skripal was in England since 2010 and according to some very low IQ individuals Russia waited for 8 years to "poison" him just before Presidential Elections in Russia. Funny, isn't it ?
Beside there are some other things that doesn't add up:

It's only 23 officers and the Brits didn't identify them by name but DID say that the Brits were sure they were spies - that is, the Brits let the Russians know that these guys are sloppy enough to reveal what they really do.

The Brits could just as easily expelled twice that number (according to defectors like "Viktor Suvorov", at least 2/3rds of Russian diplomats are spies) and not bothered to give a reason. The lack of names implies no one from the senior diplomatic list was included so Russia's spymasters will remain in Britain and the unidentified expelled officers can be reassigned by their bosses to intelligence work in other countries.

Is an expulsion like this a blow to Russian intelligence or does it merely cull the weak from the herd?

I thought maybe using a nerve agent of that caliber in a mailed letter of however they did it was suspect as well, and that if the Russians wanted him dead, they could've used any other less conspicuous means, but then I thought maybe getting to him wasn't easy. Then I saw that video of him at the convenience store buying batteries or whatever lol! They could've sent a team of 2 assassins with silencers and got them out in 1 hour instead of using such a method as a nerve agent that could easily be traced back to them.

May says the nerve agent used to poison them is a military-grade type manufactured in Russia, and she's ready to take "extensive measures."

I think she's faced a lot of adversity in the past year alone that I wasn't surprised with her tough reaction, but not sure what else she can do other than the expelling of Russian diplomats and try to increase sanctions. What else can she do?

Possible retaliation from the UK could include sanctions, although the Russian Embassy in London claimed plans were "being developed to strike Russia with cyber weapons".

Honestly, I find it hard to believe the UK gov would announce any plans when it comes to cyber attacks or anything of that sort. If they're going to do it, they ain't telling the world they're going to do it and besides, I bet they've already been doing it for a while.
