Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan turned 50 today and added his voice to growing protests by the intelligentsia over ‘climate of intolerance’, saying there was “extreme intolerance” in the country.

Voicing his feelings over the ‘growing intolerance’ and return of awards by filmakers, science and writers, Shah Rukh said he would not hesitate to give up his awards as a “symbolic gesture” if he has to but feels he does not have to do so. Padma Shri is among the awards in Shah Rukh’s kitty.

Shah Rukh, who has a string of hits from “Baazigar” to “Chennai Express” over a career spanning 27 years, was flooded with birthday wishes from his friends and colleagues including Salman Khan and hailed as an “energetic and inspiring” actor.

“There is intolerance, there is extreme intolerance… there is I think… there is growing intolerance,” Shah Rukh told India Today TV.

“It is stupid… It is stupid to be intolerant and this is our biggest issue not just an issue…Religious intolerance and not being secular in this country is the worst kind of crime that you can do as a patriot,” he said,

Asked whether he will give up his Padma Shri award, Shah Rukh responded, “I mean just for a symbolic gesture, yes, if I have to.”

At the same time, he said, “respect those who returned awards, but I don’t have to.”

“People put words into the air even before thinking and here is a secular country. Here is a country perhaps for the last 10 years that is on the cusp of going beyond what we think,” Shah Rukh, said elaborating his views on the growing intolerance.

Shah Rukh also responded to criticism about actors not participating in the protest and raising their voices.

He stressed that being a star, it was tough for him to take a stand on every moral issue. “We may talk about freedom of speech, but people come outside my house and throw stones…”

“If I do take a stand, I’ll stand by it,” he stressed.

The star also said that no one can and should ever question his patriotism.

“We will never be a superpower if we are not going to believe that all religions are equal,” he added.

To wish the actor on his milestone event, his fans started gathering outside his bungalow ‘Mannat’ since the wee hours of morning.

Shah Rukh came out to greet them and later took to Facebook to say that he is humbled by the love showered on him by his admirers.

“Right now so humbled by the attention and love being given to my Birthday. Didn’t ever realise living will be so beautiful. Thanks all,” an emotional SRK posted.

SRK has starred in films like “Baazigar”, “Darr”, “Yes Boss”, “Pardes”, “Dil To Pagal Hai”, “Dil Se”, “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai”, “Mohabbatein”, “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham”, “Kal Ho Naa Ho”, “Veer-Zara”, “Swades”, “Om Shanti Om”, “Chennai Express” and “Happy New Year” among others.

Leading the wishes on social media was the superstar’s wife Gauri Khan, who posted a picture of SRK cutting his birthday cake.

Unfortunate!
I hope SRK was not forced to say this; afterall Aryan khan's pvt videos do have the potential to stir up the web.

Maharashtra was always an intolerant state, thanks to Shiv Sena.

lungi, why don't you worry about your bloggers hacked to death or your own boat people starved to death? A Bollywood hero bitching and blabbering sounds more interesting right? When will this obsession end?

madam with all due respect this is an extremely unjust and outrageous statement, considering this state holds migrants from all over India probably more than any other Indian state and allow them to earn their daily breads.

Who does have tolerance anymore?

Everyone has a lack of common courtesy, with their daily hustle and bustle to make money to pay for expenses that are ever increasing.

I've lived in that state for 4 years.
I did not say anything against Maharashtrians- it was about Shiva Sena.
I have travelled lengths and breadths of India, lived in more than 15 states for longer and shorter period of time, I personally found people of Tamilnadu a bit unwelcoming (maybe cuz of the language) and Delhi people kind of arrogant ( maybe that's how they roll ), never faced any kinds of intolerance anywhere. I have lived in Mumbai for two long years and found marathis chill and down to earth people. Not sure how can u identify a sena guy unless u engage him in a political discussion. Would like to know what kind of intolerance have u experienced from shivsena during your stay in Maharashtra? of course if you don't mind sharing:-)

SRK is a great actor. Go back to the old days with those family films.

Better to understand the context of the speech. these people are expert spinners when it comes to news.

You've to live in interiors of Maharashtra to know what the state is really all about. I have spent 4 years of my life in Maharashtra. I've seen shiv-sena guys indulge in sabotaging shops (specially around valentines day), beating up rickshaw-walas for carrying passengers during bandh, and creating a commotion in my college campus whenever they got an opportunity (e.g during college festivals). These are some of the incidents I remember.

Lol
Me too. I have stayed for atleast 2 years in about 8 states of India.

The Shiv Sena is the one reason why Mumbai still is and will always remain one of the safest cities in India for women today.

Don't take my word for it though. I am after all a Sainik.

Safe?
Are you talking about the moral policing they do? If so why dont they go to celebrity bars/hotels and shut down the harlotry business run there?

Yes safe. S.A.F.E.

And no. Not the "moral policing."

Delhi needs its own Shiv Sena.

The problem is that Delhi is already overrun by the rapists. And the "Delhiite" is now a minority in his own city.

. .
Gather the mob and lynch him indians.
