TTP threatens suicide attacks in Karachi’

Wednesday, August 06, 2008

By Mushtaq Yusufzai & Hasbanullah Khan

KHAR/PESHAWAR: The Baitullah Mehsud-led Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) on Tuesday threatened to launch countrywide suicide attacks if the government did not stop the military operation in Swat.

Also, the TTP, which is a conglomerate of militant organisations operating in the tribal areas along the border with Afghanistan and settled districts of NWFP, threatened to extend its 'operations' to Karachi if they felt any threat to their movement.

TTP deputy leader, Maulana Faqir Mohammad and spokesman Maulvi Omar addressed a news conference at Inayat Kalley town in the Bajaur Agency where they threatened to launch suicide attacks in Pakistan's major cities, including Peshawar, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore and Karachi, if what they termed the killing of their fellow fighters was not stopped forthwith in Swat district. TTP vice chief, Faqir Mohammad said a Shura meeting was held with Baitullah Mehsud in the chair in which it was decided to launch countrywide suicide attacks on government installations if the Swat operation was not halted.

"Our deadline has already expired but again we wanted to give a ‘final’ deadline to the government to stop the operation or face the consequences," Faqir threatened. Faqir is also the commander of tribal militants in the Bajaur Agency where they had set up their own Islamic courts and are settling disputes.

Later, talking to The News by telephone from the militants-controlled Mamond town in the Bajaur Agency, TTP spokesman Maulvi Omar said they had prepared a squad of suicide bombers aged 15-20 and would send them to major cities for carrying out suicide attacks on government and military installations.

Also, Omar claimed they had even included women in the suicide squad who would be assigned tasks at sensitive locations. "A large number of women have been approaching us for the past few years and consistently wishing to be given an opportunity to sacrifice their lives for a noble cause," Omar claimed, adding dozens of women had been imparted proper training for such attacks and were waiting for a final directive from Baitullah Mehsud.

However, when asked, Omar said no woman had so far carried out any suicide attack in Pakistan. "Earlier, our focus was on preparing more women suicide bombers but we have to stop that on Baitullah's directive as the number of women suicide bombers exceeded that of men," the TTP spokesman maintained.

About reports of militants' attack on Karachi, Omar claimed that their people were already in the city but waiting for the call from Baitullah Mehsud to launch their activities. "Karachi belongs to the entire nation. We will not allow any terrorist group to lay claim to the city and collect ' ghunda' tax (extortion money) from its citizens," the militants' spokesman vowed.

However, he said right now they were busy in their activities in the tribal areas and in Afghanistan, but if they were challenged in Karachi, they would launch their attacks without any delay.

Also, he said since there were no foreign troops in Karachi and the Taliban were not facing any hardships in their movement, therefore they had no plan to carry out any such attack there. In their Shura meeting, Omar said it was felt that the government was planning military operations against them in South Waziristan, Mohmand and Bajaur tribal regions. "We are ready to fight and have heavy weapons, including anti-aircraft guns, mortars and artillery and also rocket-propelled grenades fitted on key installations," he claimed.

MQM ready to counter Taliban threat

* Sattar says extremists trying to plot ethnic, sectarian violence with variety of weapons

Staff Report

KARACHI: A day after the Pakistani Taliban said it was targeting Karachi, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leaders declared that they had proof the Taliban were plotting to “spread ethnic and sectarian violence” with a variety of weapons but the party was prepared to counter the threat.

“After this open announcement from the Taliban, can these religious and political personalities still deny the conspiracy of Talibanization in Karachi?” asked MQM Rabita Committee Deputy Convener Dr Farooq Sattar at a press conference at party headquarters Nine Zero Tuesday. In an interview with BBC Urdu on Monday, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan spokesman Maulvi Umar said that they aimed to establish themselves in Karachi. Umar said that the MQM was working on the agenda of foreign agencies and was responsible for terrorism in Karachi.

At his press conference, the MQM’s Sattar referred to these words and demanded the government do something to stop the spread of ‘Talibanisation’ and investigate the sources of its funding and weapons. The Rabita Committee deputy convenor reiterated the MQM’s anti-extremism stance. This was their “true cause” he said. The MQM sees religious extremism as a threat to peace in the country and has organized many rallies in Karachi, attended by hundreds of thousands of people, to raise public awareness.

Over the last few months, MQM chief Altaf Hussain has been warning of what he referred to as signs of Talibanization. “These signs have been denied by many factions,” Sattar said, but the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan’s Maulvi Umar just accepted before the international media that the Taliban are not only present in Karachi, but all over Sindh.

Despite the “open” work of the Taliban and a visit by Jamia Hafsa Principal Umme Hasan to Karachi, the Sindh chief minister and home minister and leaders of political and religious parties were trying to “hide the truth” of the matter from the public by passing off the MQM’s warnings as baseless, Sattar said. But after the Tehreek-e-Taliban’s announcement that it would end ‘vulgarity’ in Karachi, the city’s residents should realize the danger.

“If we do not take notice of and take corrective measures against the spread of Talibanization, the coming generations will never forgive us,” Sattar said.

The MQM will discuss this matter with the PPP, ANP and other like-minded political parties and will raise the matter in the Sindh Cabinet, since MQM has recognised its responsibilities and highlighted the problem. He hoped that coalition party PPP, as an enlightened party, will do what it takes.

He accused the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) of burying its head in the sand. “The reality is that al Qaeda terrorists have been arrested from the houses of JI leaders and it is likely that the Taliban will emerge from the houses of these very leaders,” Sattar alleged.

MQM Rabita Committee Deputy Convener Shaikh Liaquat Hussain and members Adil Siddiqui, Shoaib Bukhari, Mumtaz Anwaar and Wasim Aftab were at the press conference.

Extremely surprising statement by the PPP, given the OPEN threat by the head of the TTP regarding suicide attacks in Karachi. Head in the sand me thinks.

Sindh minister rejects threats of Talibanisation in Karachi

By Qasim A. Moini

KARACHI, Aug 6: Mincing no words, Sindh Home Minister Zulfiqar Ali Mirza denied that ‘Talibanisation’ was taking place in Karachi and said that no one would be evicted from the metropolis without concrete proof of involvement in criminal or terrorist activities.

Dr Mirza was speaking at a press conference on Wednesday at the city’s Central Police Office, flanked by the police top brass, including IG Sindh Sultan Salahuddin Babar Khattak, Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Waseem Ahmed and the heads of the city’s three policing zones.

The press conference seemed to mark a new low in relations between the PPP and its coalition partner in Sindh, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement. At a press conference on Tuesday the MQM’s parliamentary leader in the National Assembly Dr Farooq Sattar had accused Dr Mirza and the Sindh chief minister, along with unnamed political and religious parties, of “hiding the truth” about creeping Talibanisation in Karachi.

MQM leader Altaf Hussain has also been issuing regular statements regarding the perceived threat posed to Karachi by the Taliban, asking the government to take action against the militant movement.

“There is no evidence of Talibanisation in Karachi,” the home minister told journalists. “As long as no one is involved in criminal activities, they will not be evicted from the city.

“Illegal, terrorist activities will not be tolerated in Karachi or Sindh as long as I am home minister. I mean business. Our job is to provide citizens peace and security. I am not among those home ministers who sell thanas. I know what I have to do and I shall do it.”

He said all educational institutions – from madressahs to English-medium schools – were being watched for signs of criminal or subversive activities. “There are different types of terrorism: there is religious terrorism and political terrorism. Some elements want to destabilise democratic governments through acts of terrorism.

“However, a terrorist is a terrorist and a criminal is a criminal. There are no ifs, ands or buts about it. Religion, language, ethnicity and political affiliation have no standing in the eyes of the law.”

Referring to Dr Sattar’s comments made on Tuesday, the Sindh home minister said: “As responsible cabinet members, our respected colleagues in the MQM gave the impression that the Sindh government is asleep.

“We are not asleep. We are awake. We’ve been on high alert for the past one-and-a-half months.”

The minister said he had raised the issue with the Sindh governor and communicated his reservations about Dr Sattar’s statement. “The cabinet is the proper forum to raise such concerns.”

Dr Mirza also criticised the MQM’s performance in the last government, asking whether the 2002 attack outside a five-star hotel in Karachi, in which over a dozen people, mostly French naval engineers, were killed and several attempts on President Pervez Musharraf’s life happened during the PPP’s watch.

“Our brothers in the government were part of the last set-up. It was out of compulsion to keep peace in Karachi that we invited them to join the coalition government,” he said.

Referring to “Operation Zalzala” launched by the army in January this year against Taliban militants in Waziristan and the subsequent influx of refugees into Karachi from that region, the home minister defended the right of the displaced people to stay in Karachi.

“Pakhtuns are just as much citizens of Pakistan as I am. They are our brothers. They are against Talibanisation. As long as people are peaceful, they can stay in Karachi as long as they want.”

Dr Mirza also claimed that statements such as the one made by Farooq Sattar were scaring away investors.

“With apologies, I want to tell my brothers in the government that these sorts of statements are causing capital flight. Industrialists are packing up and leaving. Please avoid making such statements.”

As for the serial blasts that ripped through Karachi on July 7 this year, the home minister said he was embarrassed to refer to the blast as bombs and said they should instead be called explosions.

“No religious group is responsible. We will tell you very soon who is behind these explosions. The targeting of Pashto-speaking leaders in the city, the (serial) explosions meant to create a rift between Urdu and Pashto speaking citizens and the murder of (Bilawal House security chief) Khalid Shahanshah are all part of a conspiracy to destabilise the Awami National Party, MQM and PPP coalition in Sindh. This will happen over my dead body,” he said.

Responding to questions, he said the MQM was being fed wrong information. To another query he said it was necessary to differentiate between Afghan localities, which had been around for about two decades, and Pakhtun neighbourhoods inhabited by Pakistani Pakhtuns.

When a journalist asked if he was targeting a particular political party, Zulfiqar Mirza said he was not targeting anyone and that his words should not be twisted. He said there was a difference between Islamisation and Talibanisation. “Islamisation, yes, Talibanisation, no,” he said.

When asked about the wall-chalking and posters that have sprouted up across the city warning citizens against the impending Taliban threat, Dr Mirza said it was an “organised campaign to destabilise law and order.”

To a question about Lal Masjid cleric Maulana Abdul Aziz’s wife Umme Hassan’s recent visit to Karachi, the minister said that as a Pakistani she was free to visit the city. “We were watching her. She is not a labelled terrorist.”

Asked about the insistence of some political circles to form citizens’ committees to protect Karachi from the Taliban, Dr Zulfiqar Mirza said no help was needed to maintain law and order. “Personal armies and lashkars will not be allowed.”

There is a conflict since last few days regarding "Talibanization", expect their presence in Karachi or not............ MQM stated that, Taliban entered in Karachi and planning to capture Karachi, while sind government strictly denied, and stated that, we are alert and keep sharp eye on the situation and there is no any signal of the presence of Taliban in Karachi as yet. CM Sind Syed qayum Ali shah said, If MQM have any firm information, they should share with government while they are cronies in provincial government of sindh.

This contradictory could be a warning sign of as observing by new plan of rivals, staged against the integrity of peoples of Pakistan live in Karachi, as we are now well aware that, the word “Taliban” play a role like “Laser signature” to provide raison d'être, and invite the “Missile” International rival forces to destabilize Karachi, control on ports and capture all resources.

It’s very clear that, if it’s really not a initiative stride for any preplanned conspiracy in collaboration or favor of international rival forces, this is sensitive issue and its must not politicize, and should not propagate on media in such manner.

Government of Sindh / MQM (allies in provincial government) have any proof of Taliban’s existence in Karachi, they must take forces measures on to confront this issue, instead to broadcast on media, which may encourage international forces to penetrate in Karachi in the name of anti Taliban regime.

This may be in continuity of same regime of intentions to control on Pakistan ports, behind this whole statements game, as we remember the project of “Mobile Power plant” had been offered by USA, and I had stated my reservations in this regard in a reply post of the thread of same title in this forum.

I would be highly obliged if fellow members can guide us more relevantly in this regard.
GOD BLESS PAKISTAN:pakistan:

I don't think that the issue is being ignored.

The key here remains the fact that the extremists have to be fought in FATA, or they will continue to spread in Pakistan.

The Madrassa's need to be regulated and their curriculum reformed. There is also a need for monitoring them and their leaders, and what kinds of messages are being propagated. If hate and violence is being taught, then we need to arrest and try them.

My feeling is that the threat from the TTP, of taking over Karachi, is based upon support from the Madrassa's in the area - that would be the real threat.

.
I think the locations and areas where the TTP is forming up is well known to all, PA, GOP and also people of that area are already fleeing into safer districts as a military action will commence however If that particular area after the gathering of intelligence, a strategic strike is launched there, will that not yield better results in fact 100% results as all the militants, their leaders and their supporters will all die. Local people who are not part of this have already left the area or will leave so there won't be a collateral damage or to a very minimum extent. We will have to take some serious steps to stop this menace of the TTP and their threats keeping the GOP hostage and considering what will happen once this suicide attacks start within different cities of Pakistan, the amount of loss both human lives and property, i think its worth a short. A strategic strike.

I started a similar thread titled "Upcoming Clash in Karachi"

http://www.defence.pk/forums/national-political-issues/13260-upcoming-clash-karachi.html

Unfortunately its seems that the members on this board seem to take the same stance as the PPPP does and that is to ignore the issue and have no comment about it. :undecided:

THis is regarding a potentially huge conflict in our largest and most productive city. :what:

I appreciate your sentiments. I understand the need to fight these people in FATA and everywhere in Pakistan. My main concern is mainly because we have an unnecessary political drama being played out with this impeachment facade.

All the while our economy falters, we have a war raging in FATA and you have an unstable situation on both our western and eastern borders. This makes perfect grounds for people like the TTP to recruit desperate people. Every second lost is presenting a greater danger to Pakistan.

Tkx for your understandings. I agreed with you exactly, but this is intentional absconding of cruel ruling elites to drag country up to the failure (God Forbid). In this regard, you may please also read my detailed reply post to the post: State Bank of Pakistan’s NEW MONETARY POLICY generated by “Neo” in economic & development section.
