LOL, the USA will never voluntarily give us breathing room. And why would they?

Geopolitics doesn't run on charity.

The only reason they backed down when we took the Scarborough shoal in 2012, was because they knew the costs would outweigh the benefits.

Same reason they are backing down against Russia over Crimea.

If we want even more space to breathe, better get an HGV warhead on our DF-21D as soon as possible. And full steam ahead on economic reform and development.
