The 3rd US all-electric car model sent to China...world domination starts..

The first big shipment of Tesla Model 3s has finally landed in China today. Reports from Chinese government media report that the Glovis Symphony arrived at Tianjin Port a short time ago. The next shipments will arrive in Tianjin and Shanghai next week as Tesla rushes to convert Model 3 reservations and early orders into delivered vehicles before the end of the quarter (in which Elon Musk is hoping to eke out another profit).

The ship was loaded up in San Francisco and set out to sea on January 23rd before racking up 18 days at sea. That gives us our first look at the lead time Tesla is going to have to absorb for Chinese shipments as it works to balance the opportunity for new customers with the increase in inventory that it will experience from having fully built Tesla Model 3s in transit and on the books for 18 days.

Thankfully, the shipments to China should only be a one-year stop-gap measure while construction ramps up at Tesla’s third Gigafactory, which is just outside of Shanghai, China. The new factory will help Tesla avoid import taxes on its fully built vehicles, not to mention avoiding the work and expense of shipping vehicles halfway around the world.

The first reports of the Tesla Model 3 in China came through just a few days ago as Tesla started flying the vehicles directly into the country to get them into showrooms as quickly as possible. Seeing the car in the country created a buzz that has now increased to a fever pitch as thousands of them start rolling off of ships en masse today.

China is the world’s largest market for automobiles and also for plug-in vehicles, as governmental regulations have clamped down on vehicle emissions in recent years. The smaller footprint of the Tesla Model 3 makes it a great fit for the more congested city centers and for drivers who just want to have fun.

Reports also indicate that the smaller rear seats of the Model 3 relative to the Model S make it a little less attractive to wealthier Chinese buyers who are often driven around by a chauffeur (and thus put a premium on rear passenger comfort). However, others have found the full glass roof make the Model 3 more enjoyable for back-seat passengers.

Tesla Model 3s Arrive In Chinese Port Ready For Deliveries

Time for the Chinese invasion to begin.

The first batch of Tesla Model 3 vehicles is soon to be delivered to customers in China with the recent arrival of the cargo ship “Glovis Symphony” at Tianjin Port.

The carrier departed from San Francisco on January 23 and entered the Tianjin Port on February 12 after an 18-day journey. It is reported that another two cargo ships carrying the Tesla Model 3 cars, namely, Morning Cindy and Emerald Ace, are going to arrive at Shanghai Port and Tianjin Port respectively next week. Both two carriers came from San Francisco where Tesla vehicles make their way from its factory in Fremont to the loading dock.

Clients who ordered the first batch of Tesla Model 3 vehicles available for China received confirmation emails from the U.S.-based EV maker on November 16, 2018. Nevertheless, the delivery was deferred many times restricted by the bottleneck in production capacity.

To ramp up the production capacity and shorten the delivery period, the Tesla is accelerating the localization of vehicle manufacture in China by setting up a plant in Shanghai’s Lingang Industrial zone, which is expected to achieve an annual capacity of 250,000 vehicles by 2020.

Tesla announced on January 4 that Chinese consumers are allowed to place an order for optional configuration sets of the Tesla Model 3’s High Performance All-wheel Drive (AWD) version and Long Range AWD version on Tesla China’s official website and at Tesla’s experience centers in China from then on.

Before the latest shipment to China, cargo ship Glovis Captain transported around 3,000 Model 3 vehicles to the Zeebruggee port in Belgium in the first week of February. All cars will be handed over across Europe. The Tesla Model 3’s inroads in China and Europe are significant for the company to execute its long-term profitability strategy.

Tesla Supercharger Development In China — 5 Year Review & The Future

Tesla has helped move the idea of electric cars from niche sci-fi or hippy dream into something mainstream. Part of the way it did this was by creating a compelling product package — the car, sales experience, repair center experience, and recharging infrastructure that was based around the needs of electric vehicles and their owners: Superchargers.

2018 was big for Tesla Superchargers. The company reached 10,000 installed Supercharger stalls, as reported here on CleanTechnica in June.

As 2018 ended, I decided to review Tesla’s development in China from 2014–2018 and also look at the expected picture for China in 2019–2020.

The present map looks like this:

From https://www.tesla.cn/supercharger

Red are Superchargers that are open, grey are those that are planned and the general location.

As you can see, a large number of key Chinese cities (Tier 1), important cities (Tier 2), and developing cities (Tier 3) are covered — as well as the routes between these cities. Although large parts of China are still not covered, this might be down to these areas not having the population density or tourist destinations to justify Supercharger coverage at this moment.

Looking back over the past 5 years, the Supercharger network has steadily expanded to cover a large area of China. Below are pictures of each year and the number of Supercharger stations opened in that year.

2014

78 Supercharger sites built in the year.

2018

63 Supercharger sites built in the year.

Present status (2019)

4 Supercharger sites built in the year (as of January 15, 2019).

Total number of Superchargers installed in China: 255.

Tesla charging has developed internationally a lot since its introduction in 2012 with the arrival of the Tesla Model S, as can be seen from this review of international supercharger network development. In fact, the idea behind Tesla charging has developed from purely providing Supercharging for intercity and interstate travel to a wraparound charging service with destination charging, high-speed inner-city charging, workplace charging, fleet charging, home charging, intercity Superchargers, and in the future ultra-fast Megachargers for heavy-duty vehicles.

In 2019, with the introduction of the Tesla Model 3 into China and China’s apartment lifestyle, we are going to see some interesting developments as Tesla plans and implements associated development policies.

Tesla charging options have already been expanded thanks to Tesla adding a charging plug that matches Chinese charging standards, like with the Model S and Model X.

2019 stands to be another great year for EVs, and who knows what Supercharger news Elon will announce on Twitter next. Stay tuned to CleanTechnica for more.

Tesla Model 3 is ALREADY the top selling electric car in the world.
It smoked the #1 Chinese selling car (the BAIC EC series) by over 50,000 cars in 2018.

3 out of the top 5 selling car models in the entire world for 2018 are Teslas!
Remember it is the jealous Chinese members here posting negative articles and calling Tesla a poser...LOL!
