The South China Sea Is Ours Because It’s Got ‘China’ in the Name, Chinese Admiral Says

Iran gets Persian Gulf. India gets Indian Ocean.
There is Nan Hai 南海 in Chinese, nothing is related to China 中國 here.
In Brazil, Brazil nuts are just called nuts. The origin is implied, thus we call it the south sea.

Defiant Chinese Admiral's Message: South China Sea 'Belongs to China' - Defense One

The exact quote

From that it becomes
Yuan said that “the South China Sea, as the name indicates, is a sea area that belongs to China,” according to defense media.

I think some journalist and editor from some newspaper failed in English.

And they made a headline and article based on the that failed understanding. o_O
The admiral is being deceptive and he knows he is.

A 'sea' is a body of water that is bordered by land. So when the naming convention logically associate the body of water with the name of a land territory, it is nothing more than a reference for travelers as to what land territory or territories abuts the body of water. A logical association does not constitute a legal deed.

What the admiral said will not stand up to legal scrutiny, but he does not care. He is targeting gullible people like you to rile up unthinking nationalist support.

. .
China and chinese itself are too weak to judge others.
SCS is not very big and China is powerful enough to handle it. No other warship is able to escape the killing zone of ASBM. Our DF-26 is able to cover every corner of enemy in SCS. :D

While that can't be say for India for Indian Ocean. :D

Irrespective of whether the Admiral did try to be deceptive or not, the Admiral DID NOT said what the newspaper claimed.

A reputable newspaper that care about reputation and journalistic integrity would not make such a false claim.

Let alone making a headline and whole article based on a false claim.

If the newspaper care, and still want to make something out of the issue. it should said something like the "Admiral seem to be saying" or something similar to inform of the nature of the evidence.

Instead the newspaper made a straight claim that the reader without doing actual research would have taken as truth.

That would be either professional ignorance or worse still, deliberately deceptive.

And all the rest of argument is red herring because it is based on a false claim.

Well Indian we do not want sea water and not so much oil we just want our massive land being occupied by your army.

Read it with a pinch of salt.

It won't be the first nor the last time, some journalists esp. the anti-China Westerners takes words out of context.

Maybe the PLA Admiral purposely says it with a tint of sarcasm. :p:

Of course he did. Here is YOUR post of what the admiral said...

“The South China Sea, as the name indicated, is a sea area. It belongs to China,” said Vice Adm. Yuan Yubai, who commands the North Sea Fleet for the People’s Liberation Army Navy
It is clear enough for me. The 'It' refers to that body of water. Admiral Yuan Yubai said the SCS belongs to China by simple virtue of logical name association.

A reputable newspaper that care about reputation and journalistic integrity would not make such a false claim.
TIME have fluent Chinese staffers, buddy.

The South China Sea Is Ours Because It’s Got ‘China’ in the Name, Chinese Admiral Says

What’s in a name? An entire sea, says Chinese Vice Admiral Yuan Yubai. On Sept. 14, at a defense conference in London, Yuan said that “the South China Sea, as the name indicates, is a sea area that belongs to China,” according to defense media. The commander of the Chinese navy’s North Sea fleet added that the vast waterway has been Chinese from the time of the Han dynasty, which ruled from 206 B.C. to A.D. 220.

China claims nearly all of the South China Sea’s rocks, shoals, reefs and islets as its own, carving out the waterway with a so-called Nine Dash Line that extends southward toward Borneo to include 2 million sq km of sea. However, five other governments — those of Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and the Philippines — are also vying for ownership of various bits of sand and rock in the resource-rich waters. Maritime clashes over these shoals and reefs have, over the decades, claimed dozens of lives.

Tensions have escalated again over the past 18 months, as China has expanded the disputed territory it controls by reclaiming land around tiny islets. While other countries have also engaged in island-building, China’s efforts far outstrip those of other claimants. Defense analysts believe the People’s Liberation Army will be able to land fighter jets on these artificial islands, turning them into what U.S. Pacific Command commander Admiral Harry Harris characterized as potential forward operating bases during possible combat situations. This summer Harris called China’s island expansion “changing facts on the ground [by] essentially creating false sovereignty.”

While the U.S. says it takes no side in the dispute, Washington has defended freedom of navigation in the South China Sea and has called on Beijing to try to resolve territorial disputes through international arbitration. This summer, in fact, the Philippines took China to court in the Hague, through the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea. But China has refused to participate in the court proceedings, arguing that the South China Sea dispute is not covered by the U.N. treaty.

Meanwhile, there is no word as to whether Vice Admiral Yuan thinks the Indian Ocean belongs to India — or the Gulf of Mexico to Mexico — simply because of their names.

The South China Sea Is Ours, Chinese Admiral Says

We should use this logic

The Admiral said the SCS belongs to China. As he is supposed to because that is the official position of China.

But he did not said the SCS belongs to China because it got "China" in the name.

The "Times" title,

The South China Sea Is Ours Because It’s Got ‘China’ in the Name, Chinese Admiral Says
The "Defense one" title,

Defiant Chinese Admiral's Message: South China Sea 'Belongs to China' - Defense One
See the difference.

Although Times has an excuse, Times said,

Yuan said that “the South China Sea, as the name indicates, is a sea area that belongs to China,” according to defense media.
So Times said it is defense media that said it. Times did not check, they just copy from defense media. How convenient.

BTW, Defense media did not make any issue out of the name having "China" stuff, it is all Times doing.
