India is the first country in South Asia to operate an Awacs aircraft

India has officially taken delivery of an Awacs early-warning surveillance aircraft, part of a $1bn (£600m) defence deal with Israel.

The plane, Russian-made but packed with Israeli radar, is expected to reinforce India's maritime security following the attacks on Mumbai last year.

Only a few non-Nato countries have Awacs and critics say it is a bad omen for the arms race in South Asia.

India has ordered another two AWACS as it upgrades its military capabilities.

The Ilyushin-76 - which arrived in India on Monday - gives India the capability to track hundreds of aircraft and potential threats at sea and on the ground, at considerable distances.

India is the first country in South Asia to own an Awacs (Airborne Warning and Control System) plane, popularly nicknamed the "eye in the sky". The second and third aircraft are expected to be handed over next year.

Analysts say the purchase, part of a 2004 deal involving India, Israel and Russia, is part of India's efforts to achieve air dominance over its rival, Pakistan. Russia and Israel are India's two largest military suppliers.

India's defence procurement is expected to rise to about $100bn over the next ten years.

Delhi recently signed contracts with Israel for medium range surface-to-air missiles, and with Russia for the design and development of fighter aircraft.

Other foreign defence companies, including those from the Americas, Europe and Asia, are also lining up to do business with India.

Indian Defence Minister AK Antony, who attended the Awacs handing-over ceremony at Jamnagar air base, complained about the late delivery of defence equipment ordered by India from a number of countries.

He pointed out that the Awacs should have been delivered 18 months ago.

true china is spending 3x that amount, but their problem is lack of access to technology so they must first make that high technology which costs money meaning that the 3x advantage is negated so that they spend only 1.5x-2x as much on new weapons.

India too is spending on R&D but their method is teaming up with foreign partners meaning the same technology is made but at a bit cheaper cost.

Day is Friday , Missiles are stored in Indian , there is a problem in software that launches missiles, and 1 missile with Nukes gets launched accidently - its heading for Lahore.

It will arrive in Lahore in 15 min , Pakistan Saab Awacs happen to detect this , China detects the launch. There is no time , 2 - F16 are launched to intercep the missile , seemingly they can't reach there in time.

And the missiles hit a densly populated area - and city is lost, and the army goes into a pre planed scenario in case of a nuclear attack the awacs confirm launch was made from India and OPERATION final strike is launched

Mission control calls Primie Minister of Pakistam and its concluded that India is attacking Pakistan , and decision is taken - that there will be all out ofensive - second attack

And according to which 50 nuclear missiles are launched - as retaliation,and 50% of Pakistani Airforce is instructed to attack Indian Air basis. And 50% is patrolling local air space.

REALITY CHECK:

1. India lacks a comprehensive policy over how to deal with Pakistan. The recognition given to Pakistan as a victim of terror by the present PM has eroded any moral basis for a unilateral military strike undertaken by India. As per India's own official statement, GoP has lost control of some of the territories which are controlled by militant organisations which are increasingly assuming a transnational agenda. As such, even if a terror strike takes place in India with huge civillian casualties, there shall be no reasonable reason for India to strike as these areas are not under "GoP Control" as per GoI statement.

2. Any strike by India will entail a response by Pakistan. This will lead to unification of all terror factions on side of Pakistani Defence Forces (and PA & Co will gladly allow bolstering of their numbers for conventional and nonconventional warfare) to fight the "infidels".

3. In the event of retaliation by Pakistan, the scope of war will expand and as such, the conventional war will increase risk of use of nukes by Pakistan (even if they dont actually), a prospect no Indian government (unlike USSR Government) is likely to even think of.

4. As of now, the ability of India to put troops on Pakistani shores (amphibious offensive operations) is limited as amphibious forces are yet in the process of upgradation of troops strength. The next war will need a decisive victory to be achieved in a very short span of time, something that is still some time from IDF.

As such, the contention is totally hopeful and unjustified.

We will continue to bleed and be complacent about it. Voting pattern in latest general elections have adequately showed the Congress that their inaction coupled with Pranab Mukherjees statement in Parliament justifying non-launching of military strikes on basis of "sanctity fo human life is respected by us" (now what about life of Indian citizens one must ask?), further underlines the inability of present administration to address the issue, and the apathy of general indian public only proves the point further.

The days of when we could actually dismember Pakistan through a direct military action are long since gone. The Indian strategic thinking does not allow for a nuclear strike on Indian soil. They cant think in terms of surviving and winning a nuclear war

The level of protection offered to basic soldier in terms of Nuclear strike is - NIL

There are no fixed nuclear shelters in static cantonments where the peace time units are located

A couple of underground CPs exist which are exclusively meant to keep the higher echelons of politicos and miliatry personnel safe

the detection kits used by India are about a generation behind the ones being used by West

few things you must know:

1. War is never a "limited war". The war is always "Total War" including what Kargil War was. There was no limitation on the military application of force.

2. Limited war concept is a political concept and as such, we use this term in India as Indian Army is subservient to the civillian authority. War is always the extension of foreign policy and its aims and objectives are decided by the civillian government of the day. If they lay only few criteria, they call it limited war. But the mandate handed over to armed forces is for objectives to be achieved, and assets to be used, as also the costs paid are wholly ungoverned by the Government.

3. China first coined this term when the Vietnamese Army stopped the Chinese advances in Sino-Vietnamese war of 1979. They Communits could not tell the people that the military was unable to advance further and accept defeat in the process of their original mandate to PLA, so they invented the concept of limited war, saying that they halted their operations as their aim was only to teach the Vietnamese a lesson.

4. India can launch a limted strike aiming for terror infrastructure overtly using air assets. However, Pakistan will be forced to retaliate across the board irrespective of the legitimacy of Indian actions as their national ethos is tied to anti-Indian position. If they dont, then they shall suffer an identitiy crisis. Their psyche demands an anti-Indian approach. So the limited war concept goes out of window with that as IDF will be forced to wage a total war across the IB.

That is why it can NOT be done until and unless there is a political will to go through all the way, it has nothing to do with military might in conventional and unconventional terms, instead its all to do with the political will to be able to take a decision and follow through with it.
