The rise of China & India

What I see is the emergence of Asia of which China and India are the biggest stake holders as the Center of power in a few decades.

Internal problems are plenty and if a more stricter policy is applied India can wipe them off if needed and no one can fault India for that as we have been a soft state and victims of terror and insurgencies for a very long time.

The question is will we take up the role or will we succumb to the opposing forces i e the west or the new Islamic terror wave that will create problems for us.

I guess this is really old, or really biased, or that the creators were really ignorant. Extreme risk? Nonsense. It could have been believable if it said moderate risk or even high risk. But extreme risk? Thats obviously incorrect.

The map is from 2010.

I think the fact India is still fighting an active low-intensity Naxalite insurgency throughout over one third of its territory would be indicative of an extreme terrorism risk.

The Maoists actually have underground weapon factories pumping out weapons in major cities along the Red Corridor. That would be quantified as extreme by any standard, in some respects worse than Pakistan.

Of course the risk is much lessened with recent successes against the insurgency, but it's still there as a destabilizing factor.

Its not as severe as some make it out to be, all these states are experiencing high growth rates in GDP.

The maoists are only in the jungles and are surrendering in their hundreds. India is adopting a humanitarian approach towards them hence the slow elimination, Pakistani ISI is trying to build links with them but they will be taken care of too.

The rise of China is the best thing that has happened to India because the Western xenophobic radar is fixed on China right now. India is rising by stealth while the West makes China the scapegoat for their own economic mess. But Indians should not get too complacent; the tide can turn in a minute and India can replace China as the punching bag for inept Western politicians.

Smart Indians know that all this malarkey about 'democracy', 'shared values' etc. is highly purified bull.

China has been on West's radar right from Korean War

You are right about Smart Indians. They have known this for decades and the NAM policy and close ties with Russia (USSR) has helped in balancing the West political maneuvers.

Indians always knew that they couldn't rely on West and they have seen it ever since we got our independence. Our nation's architects made sure that we become self-reliant as far as possible and even after sanctions, this approach of local industries development and maintaining a status quo of responsible nation is paying off.

Many countries has used this Indian's responsible behavior especially highlighted in NSG waiver, where the nations supported India because of it. This reason is for gullible people and reason behind the waiver was India's market and India's progress in Thorium based reactors.

Another thing that hasn't be discussed in this forum is India's developmental projects and penetration in Africa. It is yet to be studied at all level especially the competition between India and China for this continent. Rise of Chinese and Indian influence in Africa also need more discussion as it will also become relevant in coming decades as both the nations are hungry for resources of all kinds.

It was a complicated relationship. The CCP was always seen as an ideological enemy, but China was viewed as a possible 'ally' against Soviet military dominance. The concern now is about a China that can challenge Western economic hegemony -- nobody seriously expects a military confrontation between China and the West.

Of course India knows that, if China were to be 'defeated' and lose its threat potential, the Western radar would immediately lock onto India. It's like any race: the leader has to tackle the headwind and set the pace; the person in second place avoids all those problems.

You are absolutely right that the Indian leaders steered a better course through the superpower maze, even though I would put India deep in the Soviet camp back then. Anyway, what matters is the relationship matrix today.

As we have previously discussed, India will try to play all sides to the max, but the situation is different now because the West has some serious expectations in return for its support. Let's see how the game plays out...

When Tibetan separatists have had enough, they burn themselves and no one else.

When Indian Kashmiris/Maoists/Tribals/Northeasterners have enough, they blow up truckloads of Indians, and stage attacks on India's financial capital (Mumbai) repeatedly, as well as IM attacks on New Delhi.

Check out the Terrorism Risk Index:

Terrorism Risk Index - Maplecroft

Red = Extreme Risk
Orange = High Risk
Yellow = Moderate Risk
Green = Low Risk

India is in the same category (Extreme Risk) as Somalia and Afghanistan.

Vietnam is as peaceful as China? that´s old data!
The latest Chinese mobs and riots against Japanese and their business must be taken into the 2012 comparison.

India has democracy, we just want to live a good life, thats all. India superpower, go go go. Anyway, superpower is a banned topic in China, the government does not allow "China superpower" to appear on any newspaper. We have no plan for this.

Painting your country as emerging superpower is a banned topic, really?

Not quite that extreme. China insists it is the biggest developing country. Easily 9 out of 10 Chinese agree with it. To quote a cliche, "We have come a long way but we still have a long way to go."
