The Indians, whose hiding space was furnished only with soiled mattresses, claimed to be on vacation. But authorities quickly concluded they were waiting to be smuggled into the United States via an 11,000-mile (17,700-kilometer) pipeline of human cargo — the same network that has transported thousands of illegal immigrants from India, through Central America and Mexico and over the sandy banks of the Rio Grande during the past two years.

Indians have arrived in droves even as the overall number of illegal immigrants entering the U.S. has dropped dramatically, in large part because of the sluggish American economy. And with fewer Mexicans and Central Americans crossing the border, smugglers are eager for more "high-value cargo" like Indians, some of whom are willing to pay more than $20,000 for the journey.

"Being the businessmen they are, they need to start looking for ways to supplement that work," said Rosendo Hinojosa, chief of the U.S. Border Patrol's Rio Grande Valley Sector, at the southernmost tip of Texas, which is the most active nationwide for apprehending Indian nationals.

Between October 2009 and March 2011, the Border Patrol detained at least 2,600 illegal immigrants from India, a dramatic rise over the typical 150 to 300 arrests per year.

It is just police folks are very lowly paid in the subcontinent and getting into the police force even takes a lot of bribery....thus these police are morally corrupt from the beginning.

Can you give the source of your data. So that we can compare city to city, officers with officers (like vs like).
Big cities in India are better policed compared to small cities and rest of India.

Most others have between 250 to 300, and pakistan is better than India in this regard.

In my home state, Bangladeshi are mostly involved in smuggling fake currency and terror plots through our open border with Nepal and also created widespread nuisance in Eastern part of my state. 2-3 corrupt BSF official won't change the truth of these shameless smugglers and pole vaulters.

OK, USA national average is 230 per lakh then, as against 152 in India and 600 in singapore.

This is just one part of story, access to better equipment (communication/transport/weapon) also helps US police.
The focus of Indian police can never be crime prevention with this number (and with this equipment) but only post crime response.
And they respond it with brutality so as to create a fear among citizen. (thereby preventing crime with fear)

Corruption and low wage are factors too I agree. But low numbers keep them in fire fighting mode always.

Compare the response of met police during london riots. They refused to intervene in many places due to low numbes and let the places burn.
The Indian police response would have been brutal crackdown with a dozen dead.

These smugglers work in active connivance of Bangldeshi as well few Indian forces posted along the Indian border so instead posting huge number of indian forces along border we should pay some sort of bribe to these Bangladeshi border forces so that they may be able to keep these smugglers in check. Only practical solution for this problem.

I think they should legalize cow trade :/
