Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the People's Republic of China official stand on permanent seat UNSC for India
Q: India's Permanent Representative to the UN said in a recent interview that India was confident of garnering sufficient votes in the General Assembly to win its bid for a permanent seat at the Security Council. And he was confident that China would not stand in the way. Do you have any comment?
A: China's position on the Security Council reform has stayed unchanged. We support necessary and reasonable reform of the Security Council and believe priority should be given to increasing the representativeness of developing countries. At present, member states still have acute differences on the issue, thus democratic and patient consultations should be continued to seek for a package of settlement that receives most extensive support among member states.
We always value India's status in the international affairs as an emerging market and developing power, understand and support India's wish to play a greater role in the United Nations including the Security Council. We will continue to keep contact and consultation with other member states including India on the issue.
