The Right wing here have long suspected and had serious reservations over the fact? that the Soviet Union, and then Russia/Putin has held too much sway over the left/congress, so when Modi came to power he took a hard right on the foreign policy front and embraced the US/west to steer us away from too much Russian influence. Not entirely a bad move, we here know well that there has been massive corruption with arms/weapon systems contracts, as well as the fact that Russian gear needs a lot more maintenance, spares and support have also been issues.Yes, the ties may have been there all along the history. But you know the new spark in the relation… When did it exactly start? I think it was in 2014 or 2015, when Modi was still new to the post of PM. Someone remarked about Modi mishandling the job and remarked that before Modi it could never be imagined that Russia may sell arms to Pakistan. I think that is where it all started.
A lot of it is our domestic political agenda bleeding into the foreign policy bit and that has resulted in this drift away from Russia. It's a bit of a shame, but Russia now has to compete in the free market with others for contracts, a lot of which they'll still win.
It's a different world now, no more cold war, Trump elected in the US, and if he can fight the neocon hawks in his own party and his opposition and cool things with Russia down, that would be the best thing for India-Russia relations, Modi was getting too cozy with the slimy Obama administration, I think they'll do better when dealing with a nationalist right wing US administration.
very interesting, what an insane game, the grand chessboard.Russia has taken serious objection to the 'leak' by the Pakistani authorities, in their media, about the visit of Alexander Bortnikov, Head of the Russian External Intelligence service, or the FSB, to Pakistan between November 25-27, 2016.
The visit which was designed to garner Pakistani support for operations in Allepo, Syria, was compromised by pro-Saudi factions within the Pakistani establishment, according to informed sources.
