India, the world’s largest democracy and one of the fastest growing major economy seems a picture perfect place to live in but the reality is quite different from what is portrayed. The so called cheerers of Secular India are actually practicing the worst form of violence against Kashmiris.
The lush green valleys of Kashmir breathtakingly beautiful landscape with snowcapped mountains and lakes of Kashmir has been pained with gruesome accounts of bloodshed and torture for the past 71 years.
They say freedom doesn’t come easily and who knows it better than the violence stricken Kashmiris. The wrecked paradise of Kashmir is home to victims of mass rapes, genocide, disappearances and detention, children as small as 5 years old and men as old as 90 years have faced oppression and violence in some form or way at the hands of the Indian Security Forces.
Despite decades of maintaining oppressive and murderous regime in Kashmir, India has outright failed to deter the resolve of Kashmiris fighting for their freedom and self-determination. In the recent turn of events, Indian government has applied a new strategy of falsely labeling the Kashmiri intellect (journalists, leaders, youth) as militants and has been martyring them under the garb of fake encounters and Search and Cordon Operations.
Indian governments, from past to present day scenario, have been using Kashmir as political tool to gain votes and voters’ sympathies. It is intriguing that just before the commencement of Indian general election 2019, Pulwama attack took place in Kashmir which infuriated the masses in India and people who even had some sympathies for Kashmiris begin to call out the government for revenge and strict action.
Indian PM, Narendra Modi conveniently used the incident and presented his Election manifesto in which he talked about abrogation of Article 35A and 370 that give special status to Kashmir. He promised to apply for a hardliner policy in Kashmir.
Furthermore, the Pulwama attack was used as a justification by Indian security forces to target and martyr Kashmiri youth in counterfeit operations. Hundreds of Kashmiris were subjected to violence, torture, detention and disappearances following Pulwama attack but that did not shatter the resolve of Kashmiris who have been struggling for freedom from Indian oppressive regime.
India needs to bring a shift in its Kashmir policy and should realize that its decades of oppressive regime in Kashmir has only aggravated the situation. It should seek lesson from the history that wars have never brought peace but dialogues and true intentions have. India should give peace a change for once by accepting Pakistan PM, Imran Khan’s proposal for carrying out a peace dialogue on Kashmir dispute.
