The Mosul operation

How is it going my brothers @Malik Alashter @mohammad45
‘ISIS terrorists fleeing Mosul for Syria’s Raqqa’ – French President Hollande echoes Russian concern
Islamic State militants are fleeing the battle for the Iraqi city of Mosul and are traveling to the group’s Syrian stronghold, Raqqa, French President Francois Hollande said. Ahead of the Mosul operation, Russia warned of the relocation of jihadists to Syria.
“We can’t afford mistakes in pursuit of terrorists, who are already fleeing Mosul for Raqqa,” Hollande is cited as saying by AFP.
The French leader was speaking in Paris at a meeting of top officials from more than 20 members of the US-led coalition, aimed at working out a stabilization plan for Mosul.

The battle for the strategic Iraqi city, which was held by Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) since 2014, began on Sunday and has since intensified. The Iraqi military and US-led coalition said that the operation to retake Mosul may take weeks or even months.

Late on Thursday, the Iraqi military said it had captured the town of Bartella, situated some 15 kilometers from Mosul. Lieutenant-General Talib Shaghati called the liberation of the town an “important” achievement for the operation, PressTV reported.

"Everything must be done to ensure the safety of civilian populations, now residing in combat areas and used as human shields by Daesh [Arabic pejorative term for IS],” Hollande said, adding that anti-IS forces must act “in full respect of human rights and international humanitarian law."

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) estimates that up to 1 million civilians may be displaced due to the fighting. According to the International Organization for Migration, around 5,640 people had to flee their homes in Mosul in the last three days, with the majority leaving in the last 24 hours.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault urged for the de facto Islamic State capital, Raqqa, to become the next target of the international forces.

“It’s obvious that after Mosul an offensive with similar perspectives must be prepared in Raqqa,” he said at a joint press conference with his Iraqi counterpart in Paris.

According to Ayrault, the battle for Mosul is decisive both militarily and ideologically because it’s about “stabbing Islamic State in its very heart.”

Also on Thursday, Russia’s General Staff expressed hope that the US-led coalition would cut off all escape routes for the terrorists in Mosul.
“We hope that our partners from the international coalition realize what the consequences would be of having bands freely roaming around the Middle East. Terrorists should be destroyed on sight, not chased from one country to another,” said Army General Valery Gerasimov, chief of Russia’s General Staff.

Last week, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that Mosul wasn’t fully encircled by the Iraqi forces and the coalition, warning that this “corridor poses a risk that Islamic State fighters could flee from Mosul and go to Syria.”

Earlier, RIA Novosti cited a Russian military-diplomatic source as saying that the US and Saudi Arabia have agreed to grant free passage from Mosul to thousands of IS militants.

"More than 9,000 Islamic State militants will be redeployed from Mosul to the eastern regions of Syria to carry out a major offensive operation, which involves capturing Deir ez-Zor and Palmyra,” the source said.

European Union officials have also expressed concern that the jihadists, escaping Mosul, would return to Europe and carry out terrorist attacks.

Turkey should let them slaughter each other, even encourage it. Destroying the social fabric and traumatising the collective memories of a nation is the best way to collapse it. Allow them to kill each other in the desert and intervene when you really have to (attempts to create safe havens for PKK on the border for example). Also by doing this you force the Iranians and Americans to pitch in ever more money and blood into what is nearly a 3 generational meat grinder....it's the perfect trap to lure and keep adversaries in.Turkey is wasting its energy on a strategy based on morals and not on gains...stupid mistake

What is the reason for all that anger?

What is the reason for all that anger?
Isn't anger, just rationality. You should be on my side, I total back Turkey not standing in the way of the Baghdad government, I fully support all sorts of militia entering Mosul and doing as they please. For different reasons, you and I have common ground. Beautiful no?

PMU declared they won't enter Mosul but treat the surrounding towns, outskirts and encircle the city. The same model as used in Fallujah and Ramadi.

The allegations that the PMU is going to massacre every Sunni has been proven wrong a long time ago. This was unsure during the Tikrit offensive in early 2015, the first major OP led by the PMU.. yet there were no massacres. Since then the media kept repeating it yet we see no massacres, all I see is text and claims that aren't backed up. Certain officials still use this card which is no surprise given that politicians lie daily.

You seem to fall for these lies as well. Now the post above me is an example of the 'proof' that exists, a sectarian source, the best content they can come up with is a soldier slapping someone softly, I wish all wars only had such levels of 'abuse'.

US soldier dies of wounds from bombing as Iraqi special forces join Mosul offensive against IS

In a significant escalation of the battle for Mosul, elite Iraqi special forces joined the fight Thursday, unleashing a pre-dawn assault on an Islamic State-held town east of the besieged city, and the U.S. military announced the first American combat death since the operation began.

U.S. officials said the American service member died Thursday from wounds sustained in a roadside bomb explosion north of Mosul. More than 100 U.S. special operations forces are embedded with Iraqi units in the offensive, and hundreds more are playing a support role in staging bases.

The American had been advising members of the Iraqi Kurdish force known as the peshmerga, a U.S. official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to publicly discuss details.

Roadside bombs and other improvised explosive devices pose a particular danger to advancing Iraqi forces and the U.S. advisers who are with them. The Islamic State group, which has occupied Mosul for more than two years, has prepared extensive defenses in and around the city.

Fallujah and Ramadi are in ruins. If that is the model that PMU will follow in Mosul then we must expect another huge city becoming a pile of rubble. And then what? Does Baghdad has really a plan except destroying every city the rebels control?

Mosul offensive: officials confirm US troops are on the ground
Latest departure from Obama’s pledge involves ‘forward air controllers’ spotting for airstrikes to ensure accuracy, as part of offensive to reclaim city from Isis

Although the battle to oust Islamic State from Mosul is led by Iraqi military forces and Kurdish peshmerga auxiliaries, elite international forces are playing a major role in a fight that Baghdad and Washington consider pivotal in the defeat of the jihadi group.

In a statement on Monday morning, the American general in charge of the coalition’s war in Iraq and Syria, Lt Gen Stephen Townsend, openly acknowledged the presence of “forward air controllers” amongst the US “advisory” contributions to the battle.
Those controllers – known as Joint Terminal Air Controllers, or Jtacs, and drawn from US special operations forces – are the troops on the ground who spot for airstrikes, in an attempt to ensure greater accuracy of aerial bombardment. Their presence indicates that US troops, while not formally in a combat role, are on the frontlines and willing to use substantial airpower on Iraq’s second city.

The US command’s acknowledgment of their presence is a departure from previous battles in two years of war against Isis. Members of the US Congress have criticized the Pentagon for relaying airstrike spotting through coordination cells far from the fight, including in an operations center in the Iraqi Kurdish capital of Erbil.

Having US troops spotting airstrikes is both the latest departure from Barack Obama’s pledge against having “boots on the ground” and an effort at ensuring more accurate targeting of Isis strongholds in the city.

“Jtacs are the difference between precision bombing and area bombing,” said Christopher Harmer, a former US navy pilot who said their presence indicated the US was willing to “incur casualties” in Mosul.

“With Jtacs, you can select individual targets in real time and accurately strike them. Without Jtacs, you can only bomb a general area and hope for success.”

The UK and France are also believed to have their own special forces involved in retaking Mosul. Earlier this month, two French special operations forces training peshmerga were seriously injured by a jury-rigged Isis drone which exploded after crashing near them in Dohuk, 46 miles (75km) north of the city.

While it is unclear what specifically the UK and French contributions to the battle are, it is believed British special forces will also aid in calling in airstrikes. France has sent approximately 150 troops to operate four 155mm Caesar howitzers as part of its taskforce Wagram. The French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, carrying 24 Rafale combat planes, is also in the eastern Mediterranean to support the war.

As the long-anticipated battle began on Monday, US warplanes launched substantial bombing runs on positions around Mosul. The US reported attacking three units of Isis fighters, two staging areas for their operations, 12 Isis rally points and even a bridge. Six tunnel entrances, an anti-artillery system, four generators powering communications-signal towers and four mortar systems were destroyed, according to the US military.

In a sign that the coalition is bracing for a grueling campaign, Townsend, the US commander, said that the fight was likely to last “weeks, possibly longer”.

You do not understand, there is too much hatred and blood among with too many foreign and domestic interests. Iraq and Syria will convulse in multi generational and very bloody sectarian conflicts. My strategy would put Turkey in a secure position in which it would only have to defend itself from much weaker factions who are only bent on competing against each other, this would reduce the threat against Turkey while locking in multiple adversaries and potential adversaries to waste men and material in the Middle East. This is my calculus, not anger, but rationality.

Falujah is in ruins because it was under IS control for close to 3 years. And The PMF wasn't involved in the Ramadi offensive.

Actually the cities which the PMF liberated had the least damage. Look the towns of sallihiddin, Tikrit, Diyala.

You seem pretty clueless actually.
