The most bucks for the biggest bang

Hasina's statement:

“Our Leader of the Opposition is inviting a country to punish Bangladesh … I leave it to the people to judge whether she can write such an article,” Hasina said in parliament in reply to a supplementary question from Jatiya Party lawmaker Mujibul Haque during the Prime Minister’s question-answer session.

“My question is, being a former Prime Minister how she can write against her country and the countrymen? Doesn’t she believe in the country’s independence and sovereignty?”

The Prime Minister made the observation referring to the opposition leader’s article published recently in the Washington Times, in which Khaleda had expressed concern about the future of democracy in Bangladesh and invited foreign countries including the United States to intervene in Bangladesh.

Khaleda in her article said the United States was one of the first nations to recognise Bangladesh’s right to self-determination.

Mujibul Haque asked Hasina whether there was any political connection behind Khaleda Zia’s article published in the newspaper of the US, which stood beside Pakistan during the Bangladesh’s Liberation War in 1971, since the article was published days after the Prime Minister’s visit to Russia which had supported Bangladesh during the war.

In response to the query, Hasina said, “The US wasn’t for our independence in 1971. They had favoured the Pakistan occupation forces as they sent the seventh fleet to Bangladesh during the Liberation War.”

Hasina alleged that the opposition leader sought intervention of the US government to cancel the Generalised System of Preference (GSP) facilities to hurt the country’s export sector, to deny visas to the Bangladeshi businessmen and to stand against the people of Bangladesh.

Referring to the Liberation War perspective, the Prime Minister said, “The then Soviet Union Russia (now Russia) had extended its all-out supports and helped us in many ways during the war. It’s the Soviet Union which pressed veto against any proposal that went against the interests of Bangladesh. They’re our friend of bad times.”

Replying to another supplementary question from treasury bench lawmaker Adv M Rahmat Ali of Gazipur-3 constituency, the Prime Minister said the deal to purchase military equipment worth US$ 1 billion from Russia under the Russian state credit was signed to strengthen the capacity of the Bangladesh Armed Forces.

In this regard, she mentioned that Bangladesh purchased military equipment in the past also from many countries including China, the UK and Russia.

Hasina also informed the House that the main work for the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant would begin in the first-half of the next year as the preparatory works for the project were likely to be completed by this year-end.

Khaleda wants to punish own people, country: Hasina - bdnews24.com

Hasina is now attacking the US....

Actually I agree with Hasina on this particular issue. Muslim countries future is much more with powers in Eurasian landmass than with the US. US is on its way out from this space. What all Muslim countries need to do is become more allied with SCO and Russia in particular. That will provide the biggest blow to our next door neighbor and also help us in the long run.

Similarly I predict that Japan and S Korea will eventually kick out US bases, make alliance with ASEAN and become more friendly with China.

If this is the long term picture, both China and Russia should not be a bad destination for getting military and nuclear technology. USA will never provide these tech to big Muslim countries anyways.

1. I am not exactly sure what the topic is about (as Kobiraaz) is on my ignore but it appears to be an economist article and also a few posts about coups.

2. The Bangladeshi military is a professional organization composed of well-educated and intelligent people who understand the importance of civilians running the country (military rule of a country is dangerous both for the military and the country, it is more of a burden than a pleasure for any professional and sincere military who want to be able to focus on their specifically designated task of defending the country) and the sancrosanct nature of parliamentary democracy and ensuring its continuity.

The Bangladeshi army will not carry out any coups.

It will only carry out a coup in very extreme cases i.e. virtual collapse of the country and if the US and "international community" (west) do not exercise their de facto veto of any coup.

3. The Bangladeshi military carried out operations last year where they arrested and took action against extremists in the military seeking to organize a coup.

These extremists are similar to the fundamentalists of Jamat (though it is said they were aligned with another radical organization, Hizbut Tahrir).

4. The Hasina Wajid administration will continue to administer Bangladesh and then both the military and the US will ensure a transition of power to the next government which is most likely to be the BNP of course.

The Hasina regime knows it limits e.g. it won't dare harass Muhammad Yunus any more than they already have as he is backed by the west who admire his activities.

To all mature and sensible posters including mainstream Bangladeshis, Chinese, Indians, Pakistanis, Americans etc please do not take the sensationalism in this forum you see seriously especially since it emanates from partisan and deceitful supporters of a party with 4.7% of Bangladeshi votes.

Agreed, but we should not forget the big picture.

For now Hasina is just on a spree to steal as much money as possible from these big ticket item purchases. If we can get Russian Nuclear plant as a result, why not, it will be good for Bangladesh. If Khaleda can get US help to come back to power, it is all good. Last time US was on the side of India and its agent Gen. Moeen, which spelled disaster for KZ.

It seems Hasina has failed to keep the promises made to the US government. If you read the wikileaks cable you'd know that hasina literally failed in every infrastructure project made to the US. The nuclear plant is something both the parties agree upon, KZ went to china for the deal; but it was during the end, and BAL went on with it. Hasina has 'backing' from the Kremlin it seems.

There are scores of issues that Awami league regime acted against US (and Bangladesh) interests in favor of indian one and for mujib cult. Bangladesh is one of places where US has learned, once again I suppose, india is two faced snake and can not be trusted. Hasina is speaking out against US on indian instigation and with backing.

Arms deal is nothing but farce and will not enhance defensive or offensive capability of Bangladesh. This deal was done purely to loot more money for Awami League and to fill pocket of some top level generals before trying political time (beyond 2013). Also, this gives Awami League the opportunity to launder money to Russia and secure safe heaven because for Awami League, west may no longer be safe place. Funny thing is even Awami League does not trust india when it comes to safe heaven, that is damming recognition for indian clowns in south block.

Yes i believe that was disrespectful to James Bond, my bad. But i can't respect someone who would call someone an Indian slave(totally not a personal remark) just because their ideologies are different. Plus his analysis only leads to conspiracy theories so i won't really call him an analyst. Paranoid sounds better. Anyway respect is earned, and he certainly couldn't impress me. Cheers
