February 15, 2010: Russia's effort to develop an F-22 class fighter (the PAK FA) is going to require a lot of work. The prototype, that took its first flight recently, was clearly the basic Su-27 airframe modified to be stealthier. This included changing the shape of the aircraft to be less radar reflective, and providing internal bays for bombs and missiles. But there's much more to do in order to achieve anything close to the stealthiness of the F-22. It took fifteen years for the F-22 to go from initial flight, to entering service. The PAK FA could proceed faster, learning from the F-22 experience (especially if some of the Internet based espionage carried out in the last decade was Russian). But such development speed has not been a Russian characteristic.
Another problem is the engines, which were not ready for the first flight. Older model engines were used, because initial flights are mainly to confirm the basic airworthiness of the airframe. The new engines, also being used in the Su-35, are suffering development problems. The Russians have always had difficulties with their high end military engines, and that tradition continues. Currently, the Russians say it will take several years to perfect the new engine.

Russia will also need a new family of air-to-air missiles, as the current ones are too large for the internal bays on the PAK FA prototype. These are already in the works, along with more compact versions of air-to-surface missiles. There are also problems with the electronics and, well, you get the picture.

I still don't know why they are saying 'modified Su-27 airframe'.It's like calling F-22 a fighter aircraft version of B-2 spirit...:azn:

Simplest answer of all question is , what you seen a flying PAKFA was just a frame. Still used old engine and no avionics yet. This plane engine is still under development. And first Russian induct this plane then later comes India. Planes has long way to go for combat ready.
India might not interested in this plane, because they have almost equally capable SU30. But if the target is Chinese SU30, then they really need this plane in near future. This plane has no role in Pak-India standoff. Both countries has deep territorial radars. And plus major strategic strike points are not far from border.

please go through the full article in this thread then comment and its not written by internet warriors like us but someone with some knowledge atleast

care to explain how it resembles the su-27 ?

o yeah ausairpower.... they are always trying to convince Aussie Govt to buy F-22....even before Pak-fa, they were portraying Russian Flankers PLAAF old H-6 and SU-30 MKKs as far superior to JSF......I would advise you to go through the whole website........you will also be convinced to this point......here is an extrat of their assesment about EF
An experienced F/A-18 pilot who flew the Typhoon simulator commented to the author that the aircraft's manoeuvre/handling performance did not appear to be a dramatic improvement over the F/A-18, and rudder authority at high AoA did not match the F/A-18. It is however possible that further refinement of the flight control software could have yielded handling improvements since the mid nineties. Eurofighter Typhoon - Demon or Lemon?
I think they should rename their web as www.aurairchickens.net :coffee: or try to get acts in "who's line is it anyway"

That picture looks incredible.

PAK FA is a worthy successor to the awesome flanker series.

Will look incredible in LOW VISIBILITY grey camo

Hasnain.

Maybe the Aussies are genuine fearful of the the huge chinease flanker fleet.

Aussies are outnumbered 10-1

They need the BEST.

JSF or in deed F18SH is good but not the best the PLAAF will overwelm them with hundreds of J10/J11/SU30 fighters.

let alone a whole flanker fleet their work seem to suggest that a squadron of flankers would be enough for whole RAAF....thats why I dont prefer to quote this website anymore.....but i do think that if this think tank would have say in RAAF and Australia then mothers would say to their childern "Chup kar ke so ja warna J-11/Su-37 ko bulaloon ge!!!"
