The Little Israel in India

Sri Lankan tamils

India initially hatched and funded the LTTE precisely to support the Tamil cause and cause troube within Sri Lanka. India only turned against the LTTE when they started inciting/supporting Tamil unrest within India.

Also, I am not too familiar with the whole controversy, but AFAIK the Tamil complaint is more of a discrimination complaint; Sri Lankan Tamils haven't been evicted and displaced en masse and their homes/lands given over to Sinhalese residents.

I do acknowledge your point about Tamil mistreatment, but you will also note that India/Sri Lanka relations are not all that great. Sri Lanka is very friendly to both Pakistan and China. I think PAF planes are even stationed in Sri Lanka.

India has US $100B trade with Arab league while trade with Israel is around US $4-5B. Also 70+% of India's fuel comes from Arab countries. Millions of Indians work in the gulf countries remitting large amounts of foreign exchange (Almost 20% at times of all foreign remittances) and contribute to GDP growth. It is in vital Indian interests to maintain good relations with Arab countries as it traditionally has. Even now there are a good section of people in India who are vocal against Israeli policies in Gaza.

IMO, maintaining good relations with both Israel and Arab countries is necessary to play a role in a peace process if India would choose to do so in the future. Also defense cooperation with Israel is necessary to get advanced technology related to UAV and AWACS along with Anti-missile systems that would raise eyebrows from the pro-Pakistan lobby in pentagon. More so with respect to China and keeping an eye on borders.

Now coming towards India-Palestine relations to balance the picture

This is a document from India ministry and the last three pages indicate aid to Palestine in Education, economic development, IT and health.
http://meaindia.nic.in/foreignrelation/palestine.pdf

And apart from the usual developmental aid to Palestine ( India gifts embassy to Palestine, pledge $20 million aid ) , India was one of the first to help out after the recent atrocities in the Gaza strip ( 'India's Aids to Palestine Makes it a 'True Friend' )

Now compare that with what China and others have done for Palestine other than rhetoric? Is it surprising then when Arab countries continue to have good relations with India and Mahmoud Abbas says:
Ahead of his talks with Singh, Abbas expressed that Palestine expects India to play a crucial role in the Middle East peace process. “India maintains special relations with all the countries in our region, including the state of Israel, and can do a lot to push forward the peace process,” Abbas said.
India Stands Committed To Palestinian Cause

This is not only because Indian muslims have influenced this, but also because the majority of Indians support this policy. A democratic country would have to eventually support a humanitarian policy as well as look after its interests.

Tough question (and please try to answer honestly):

If Israel had displaced 600,000 Hindus and was oppressing them because of their religion, would India still be doing business with them?

Personally, I doubt it.

There is no way a democratic government in India would be able to have anything to do with a country that presecuted Hindus to that extent because of their religion. Not just the BJP, but no political party could possibly survive if it advocated such close ties.

At the price of being called cheeky....

Pakistan based groups have displaced most of the Hindu population from the Kashmir valley .... but India still does manage to do some business with Pakistan, doesnt it? :azn:

Yawn. Your avoidance of the question is all the answer we need.

The answer is right in my question dude!!! You asked for an example and I gave you one.

Have you bothered reading the contents in this link? It talks about some politicians fighting; with one of the politician trying to create a seperate "state" not a seperate country!
How is this link in anyway a proof to your statement!?

Tamil Nadu : Separatist cries,Indian Politics, News Analysis, India News Online

There is no Tamil unrest..there has not been one for many years decades actually.

Also please read your own(and very old) link, they are fighting for another state within India.LTTE destroyed any chance of their own long term survival or any dreams of a greater Tamil Ealem by assassinating Rajiv Gandhi. The movement which had some general sympathy in TN then after that one event just disappeared.Even when the LTTE got massacred in SL this year, there were hardly any large scale protests in TN.

THE DECLINE AND FALL OF TAMIL SECESSIONISM IN INDIA – 1|Lanka Journal

This article claims that the secessionist movements died decades ago, but the LTTE were trying to revive those feelings -- to broaden their support -- and that is why India turned against them.

Yup...the LTTE were fanning the flames of a "Greater Ealem" one time during the late 80's...but as I said they shot themselves in the head by assassinating Rajiv Gandhi in Tamil Nadu. It just finished off all popular support for the LTTE in the state and did more than anything the Indian govt could do. It was Prabhakaran's biggest mistake.

Frankly the Hindus in India would not care...Hinduism is hardly a religion and there is no "umaah" concept in it. Hindus in India only react when they themselves are affected in some way, they wont care about people in far off lands. A Catholic white woman holds the power in India and a Sikh administers it.Does anyone care?
