Nawaz Sharif’s reason for supporting Iftikhar Chaudhry one year ago was to get back at Musharraf, a glorified version of kindergarten revenge. Nothing more. Today, Mr. Sharif’s purpose is to grab the federal government. He believes his right to rule Pakistan was snatched away from him in 1999 and he wants it back. Aitzaz Ahsan is building a new career. And Iftikhar Chaudhry is just a pawn. Zardari and Nawaz used him against Musharraf. Today, Nawaz will use him to capture Islamabad.

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan—If I ever wanted proof that the lawyers’ movement ceased to be a neutral populist movement for justice and had instead been hijacked for dirty political tricks, I found it last week.

It was stunning to watch the leadership of the lawyers’ movement traveling to Lahore to meet Mr. Nawaz Sharif and sweet-talk him into joining the mayhem and chaos that will be unleashed in the name of the so-called ‘long march’ next month.

If the movement is unbiased and is for justice and includes all Pakistanis, why put the movement in the service of a single politician like Mr. Sharif? Why not keep the movement unpoliticized? How can Mr. Kurd and Mr. Aitzaz Ahsan guarantee that Mr. Sharif’s own narrow political goals won’t supersede the movement’s universal goals? [I won’t ask about Mr. Sharif’s original sin of ordering his supporters to scale the walls of the Supreme Court of Pakistan and storm the building to intimidate the judiciary, for which he is yet to apologize. Maybe Mr. Aitzaz Ahsan, in the interest of serving a noble cause, will want to ask Mr. Sharif to do so?]

The fact is that mounting evidence shows that this movement was hijacked by Pakistan’s wily and dirty politicians, with the active support of Mr. Aitzaz Ahsan and Chaudhry Iftikhar. The lawyers and the ordinary supporters are either ignorant about this, can’t comprehend it, or are simply ignoring this bitter truth.

First, Chaudhry Iftikhar partially politicized his cause [ouster from job] by picking Aitzaz Ahsan from the PPP which at the time had a clear interest in creating trouble for the sitting government. The former CJ’s car moved around the country with PPP’s flags. No matter how much Aitzaz Ahsan waxes eloquent about his love for justice, he can’t deny that he was biased in favor of his party boss who was secretly negotiation a return-to-power deal with the sitting ruler. Mr. Ahsan manipulated the intensity of the street chaos by the lawyers in accordance with the temperature of the secret talks between his party boss and the sitting ruler.

Second, when Iftikhar Chaudhry was released from his house arrest a year ago, the first thing he did was to drive to the Islamabad residence of Mr. Zardari and get his blessing. Why didn’t Mr. Chaudhry Iftikhar drive to see Mr. Nawaz Sharif, for example? He did it on Mr. Ahsan’s advice, and the good and noble Mr. Ahsan thought he’d be doing a favor for Mr. Zardari by allowing his party to take the entire credit for the lawyers’ movement. When Zardari snubbed them for whatever reason, Mr. Ahsan and Chaudhry Iftikhar decided to approach Mr. Sharif.

The point is this:

Both PPPP and PML-N first used the lawyers’ movement to take revenge from the former ruler, Pervez Musharraf.

When PPPP got the federal government and PML-N the Punjab government and ministries in Islamabad, both parties distanced themselves from Chaudhry Iftikhar.

Now when PML-N wants to target PPPP, Mr. Sharif has suddenly rediscovered that Chaudhry Iftikhar has a good cause that needs backing.

Aitzaz Ahsan is a smart guy. He knows that party ‘owners’, late Benazir Bhutto and now Asif Zardari, only care about themselves. BB had no problem that her self-imposed exile destroyed the political careers of PPP members. She was content staying abroad for a decade and enjoy her newfound wealth [and defend this wealth in courts]. After a decade of doing nothing, Mr. Ahsan found something to do, maybe even create a name for himself independent of his patron party. Good for him. But then why the hypocrisy of keeping one foot in the lawyers’ movement and the other firmly in the PPPP?

Nawaz Sharif’s reason for supporting Iftikhar Chaudhry one year ago was to get back at Musharraf, a glorified version of kindergarten revenge. Nothing more. Today, Mr. Sharif’s purpose is to grab the federal government. He believes his right to rule Pakistan was snatched away from him in 1999 and he wants it back. Now it is a good time to unsettle the PPPP government. That’s why Mr. Sharif didn’t hesitate to call Mr. Zardari ‘Musharraf’s friend’, despite the fact that Zardari played a crucial role in forcing Musharraf to resign in humiliation and that Mr. Sharif could not have done it alone no matter what.

That’s dirty Pakistani politics at its best. And so, next month, we’ll see another round of internal destabilization in Pakistan with this ‘Nawaz Sharif Movement’, and scores of innocent lawyers and the public will be made to think this is change but it’s not.

Forget judiciary and Iftikhar Chaudhry. This is about Nawaz Sharif’s march to power in Islamabad. If you accept this, then hurray to this march, but please don’t talk about ‘independent’ judiciary. There is nothing ‘independent’ about Iftikhar Chaudhry’s ‘march’.

.
What the hell? The author promises evidence about his claims in the initial para's but never gives any.

If Aitzaz Ahsan wanted political gain then he would've been loyal to the PPP leadership and quietly taken a ministry and loot and plunder. But there is something else on his mind.

About Nawaz Sharif, it works both ways. He is using the lawyer movement to counter the PPP government, and the lawyers are using HIM for their own interests, which is free judiciary.

Nawaz Sharif is pro judiciary from the first time the judges were deposed his righ to rule was taken away but I don't see him running around amking back seat deals like Mushy or Zardari to take power or he could have shaken hands with PML(Q) having both national Punjab and Baluchistan assemblies.

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan—If I ever wanted proof that the lawyers’ movement ceased to be a neutral populist movement for justice and had instead been hijacked for dirty political tricks, I found it last week.

If Nawaz is a senior politician who is with a cause from the start do you think they will discount his appearance lawyers movement and anti PCO was started by PML-N and PTI alongside part of the then MMA, you can't hijack what you have started or made.

It was stunning to watch the leadership of the lawyers’ movement traveling to Lahore to meet Mr. Nawaz Sharif and sweet-talk him into joining the mayhem and chaos that will be unleashed in the name of the so-called ‘long march’ next month.

If this mayhem brings people out on the streets and unify then why not long marches and movements created my country or anyother country in the world it also is practised in every democracy in the world.

If the movement is unbiased and is for justice and includes all Pakistanis, why put the movement in the service of a single politician like Mr. Sharif? Why not keep the movement unpoliticized? He has apologized before for the actions of some of his supporters who somehow myseriously walked and joined the PML(Q) or left the party and yes the emphasis remains that he is in the long march as a Pakistani who believes in a cause and so does his party and its followers. Why can't they join? In politics their is pressure but no force and pressure may have been applied on the then Cheif Justice not force. (completely against the laws of physics but you need to think before understanding what that means).

I still don't understand why you use the word Hijacked so much it is a movement being joined by a party that holds like minded views similar to the lawyer community and has been with them from the start.

His boss had only one way of getting in the country after all the corruption she presided.

When Zardari snubbed them for whatever reason, Mr. Ahsan and Chaudhry Iftikhar decided to approach Mr. Sharif.

Mr. Zardari couldn't quite cut a deal with Iftikhar Chaudry because of the NRO snag. Zardari is an oppurtunist who has shut the mouths of his fellow leaders.

I remember no time during the power sharing days of the PPPP-PML(N) days when PML(N) ever changed its views and even then they tried to bring the CJ back.

But then why the hypocrisy of keeping one foot in the lawyers’ movement and the other firmly in the PPPP?

He was a self made man how can he not have a dream and do his best to acheive it if someone follows a political party from his youth he doesn't want it to deteriorate the way the PPPP has after the arrival of Zardari in the political game.

He couldn't have done it but somehow Zardari made a deal with Musharaff as well some sort of leave and you won't be chased after and that has really gotten PML(N)'s goat for they wanted to try him in courts (independent ones ofcourse).

That’s dirty Pakistani politics at its best. And so, next month, we’ll see another round of internal destabilization in Pakistan with this ‘Nawaz Sharif Movement’, and scores of innocent lawyers and the public will be made to think this is change but it’s not.

Yes and what is change the sudden growth of wings???
The movement will bring people to come out and play a real part in shaping the country.

.
Another perspective:
...It is wrong to think that the lawyer's movement ahs not gained anything in its two years. It's achievements are many but the major being having created a revolution in Pakistan where we can atleast dare to speak up against injustice, where we want democracy and justice and equality in our country and not American stooges. We have changed and history has been written -

.
It must be noted that Nawaz is the same guy who sent his ghundayz to supreme court in 1998 or was it 1999 to scare the hell out of Chief Justice.

And it must be noted that they all ended up in PML(Q) or left the party after Musharraf came to power.

i dont care about nawaz sharif but i definately wants to see free judiciary in Pakistan. without free judiciary our comin dacades will be quite similar to that of our history.

.
Pakistan's dilemma from the very mid 80's is jihaalat and extremism which continues to ruin the the country today as well.
How many people today cry for free judiciary, yet if you ask them the breakdown of what really happened or who's factually and technically wrong or right, you will not hear single logical argument.
I cannot believe the audacity at which some people whine and rant abt issues which they themselves do not have 1/3rd of the knowledge required for them to speak on it.

Sir but how?
I think your free mean neutral not free from accountability.
Do u think thy r neutral?
They misuse power.
Support terrorist (Red mosque) case. no logics.
Support court decision in Chaudry son case but oppose in Dougar daughter. Interesting point is that Mr. Nawaz Sharif also misuses power for her daughter.

The game is not for free/neutral judiciary. Its only to make Mr. Sharif Ammer-ul-Mohminin.

first of all parliment has not given cover to wat musharraf did. this mean those who were thrown out are still the judges. also those reinstated are not being reinstate but reappointed which u cannot do when they were already judges. also iftikhar chaudhri has become a symbol of this movement coz he is the one who took stand against musarraf's unconstitutional step. this gov has made a joke out of whole judiciary to only make it suit their requirenments.

I can see why our country is going down because of citizens like you who are never going to let the system work and wait all their life for a saint to arrive and fix everything.

Yeah and upon learning about these gundaz, Musharraf instantly hired them for his own party. The Presidential candidate of Kings Party - PMLQ - was the one leading the gundaz.
