The Kerala Model: Probably the right way forward

How Kerala can progress without the NR Keralaite remittance is still a question unanswered?

.
Well, considering Kerala had a very high HDI to begin with. The HDI was around 0.7 at the time of Independence. I dont think there was any foreign remittance then was there? Now hypothetically considering that the population had remained stable since Independence, there wouldn't be this exodus of people to the Gulf region. It is the result of massive additions to population made during the 50s and 60s and low growth trajectory during the 65s-70s.

Btw, it is foolish to rule out economic development completely. But in my opinion, the scramble that we are making for money making and GDP nowadays is Stupid. We can provide welfare to the poor people of our country even with a relatively low GDP per capita. There are some things we need to learn from the administration of the Kings of Kochi and Travancore.

The exodus of Malayalees to Gulf, Europe & US gives a safety valve to GoKerala. Otherwise how could Kerala would have given jobs to so much educated people.

.
Yeah a feel good post but more needs to be done. The Kings of Kerala have for the most part always put the ppl first and foremost. When there was a famine in the 20th century, a King purchased and gave the seeds of Tapoica plant to everyone to stop starvation and give nutrition. It was truly a gift. One mere plant could feed an entire family. ANyway, industry needs to be developed to sustain the economy. Kerala is in a prime position to create a industry focused on being green. I think that would help not only the state and its tourist economy but also India as a whole. Trash is strewn everywhere with very few facilities to pick up and dispose.

Kerla is running on Soudi money. It is ever said that "You can find mallu at every corner of world". It is true, Malyalam guys work in Arabian countries, USA and europe as labor, carpenter, mechanic, driver etc. Kerla doesn't have good industrial base or better infrastructure.

So kerla can not be ideal model.

.
Although Kerala has a good HDI,the state needs industries to sustain.I for one believe that for the poor states in India we should have a communist government as there was in Kerala.Once it has reached a considerable good level then a mix of capitalism is required to move any state further ahead. At present the communists with their outdated ideologies are bogging the state down when even their comrades in China have changed their stance towards capitalism.

Then how would you explain the current state of WB, with the whole state it seems going down the crapper and they were ruled for 35 years by Communists.

a good portion of Kerala's economy comes from money sent from the Mallu's working as laborers in the gulf countries in terms of infrastructure and industry Punjab and Gujarat are the ideal model

are you kidding me? you should be ashamed of yourself for even suggesting such a thing look how fcked up WB is after almost 40 years of communist rule and still it suffers because they vote for left wing and its idiots like Banarjee whom claim to help the poor but when it comes down to the moment of truth she waddles on and about claiming that this is bad for WB etc Kerala is unique in the since that in most of its years as a state in independent India its state economy was a democratic socialist-welfare economy which is why it has high literacy, good medical care, education but in terms of infrastructure it is on par with states like Orissa or Andrha Pradesh

Cut us some slack bro. We suck in infrastructure due to the high population density and high cost of land. We can't even widen the national highway without displacing lakhs of people.

Come on Buddy........... Before Gulf our people went to Singapore & Malaysia ......Now they prefer Europe & America..........By the By you name any country or Place in India you will find a Malayali

Thats exactly he meant. Without remittances from abroad it would be very hard for GoK to balance the budget.

Who has fed you this BS ?

I would have agreed if the above was said some time back. But things have changed with demographics. Nowadays you hardly find a Mallu working as a labourer in Gulf. The least you can find is some super market helper, but construction working, farm working naahh...

They have moved up in hierarchy and are controlling the business houses in those countries. The biggest donors to Shieks funds are by Mallus like yusuf ali of EMKE group, GEMS group owner sunny varkey and many others like PNC menon of shobha developers group. These 3 alone employ more than 50,000 of mallus and their revenue run over Billions.

Gone are the days of petty labourers working hard and sending money. The low level jobs are taken over by a few nationalities which i dont want to mention here.

So get ya facts right Sidhu.

Even the mallu enterpreuners are bringing Arab investors to the state too.. I have pretty big list of infra projects funded by them.

Yes there are considerable amount of men working abroad, there are many factors behind it.

Kerala primarily is not a industrial state, we dont have hundreds of acres of barren lands like any other state in India. The whole state is like a big town, starting right from the district of kasargod to Trivandrum and on eastern side we have western ghats running all along.

Whatever heavy industries will make ecological disaster for this green state, thats why we are focussing on IT and IT related industries and non polluting ones.

Kerala in its own is different from rest of India, and we are happy with it.:)
