The Kerala Model: Probably the right way forward

Kerala a role model big
Being a Malayali my self i don't agree. In terms of HDI yes we are far ahead of any state in our country and at par with developed world
But when it comes industry...hardly were have anything to boast about .
Kerala economy runs on Remittance send by expats.
So ladies and gentleman lets not be delusional about it, we need more industry but looking at attitude of our leftist govt i highly doubt.

Da Patti! then explain how kerala's hdi was around 0.7 at the time of independence when India's was around 0.35 . Even today, India hasnt achieved the HDI index that Kerala had at the time of Independence. Dismal Performance isnt it?

Please dont post photos of Silk Smitha and Shakeela :rofl:

Simple! To study or to work. Nobody from Kerala goes to Chennai or anywhere in the country to do simple physical labour.
Now, why are there so many labourers from TN in Kerala? Is it that they are going away from a high GDP state to a low GDP state? :azn:

The funny part is there are labourers from UP/Bihar in TN who work for cheaper wages than what the Tn guys can make in TN.Thats why people go to kerala to work.

and why do you look down upon physical work? someone does it for you because of their situation and u look down upon it,thats sad man.

And secondly nobody here is proposing TN as some ideal place or a TN model,u r the one arguing for a Kerala model.

so,i dont have to defend here.

And Kerala is full of cash crops, there are so many things that favour The malayalees and Tn doesn't have that advantage.

It is no model,it is just existence.

Most of the literacy levels is because of the huge presence of Christian institutions and their schools.

one more thing, kerala also has 90% literacy, how come people from there go to other places to study?

Neither is Kerala a good model nor is Gujarat.Kerala with all its literacy, wealth, etc. cannot sustain without industries(i am not talking of the service sector).Gujarat on the other hand has more than enough industries however the living standards of people(especially in rural areas) are pretty bad. Moreover the pollution and toxic wastes churned out is uncontrolled in Gujarat which is doing irreparable damage to air, water and soil over there. If you want a personal experience go to the Ankleshwar or Vapi belt. What is needed is a balance of both the states.

I do not look down on physical labour but it is the truth that those who can afford to move up the ladder, move up the ladder. And the welfare of a group of people can be estimated on how much they have moved up the ladder. I hope you get it.

You think only Keralites go out to study? Please come to CUSAT and take a look at how many students come from the north and even from TN. Dont TN guys go outside to study? And it is a fact that a lot of engineering seats in the state remain vacant even after all the allotments. This is because people pay donation fees to the private institutes in TN and Bangalore for reservation of seats. It is a pain in the a$$ to get the money back and so, they continue their studies there.

Dude, I m trying to attack you or anything. But it is a fact that Kerala has exemplary performance in the Human Dev. Department and many states that are way richer than Kerala have been unable to match it. There must be something that is going right over there. As I said, ruling out economic development is foolishness but the way we are running behind it is totally wrong. We are trying to pursue a centralised growth economy. This leads to a rural-urban divide and hence rural people flock to urban areas and start creating problems over there. This kind of a thing is non-existent in Kerala. Every other city is more or less at the same standard. I hope you get what I m trying to say. :)

Kerala model may not be applicable for entir India, but the Kerela base (such as literacey) is certainly very much needed all over India.

and your point is, yes kerala has high HDI but we have to also be self sufficient in our economic needs. I dont like the fact that our economy depends to much own remitance.
If you are not getting the point i make then lets take the example of Cuba and USA.
Cuba and USA have high HDI infact Cuba has much better health care facility(being the only successful socialist economy in the world) but that doesn't mean they have a better economic model. If you compare purchasing power of both the country then they are poles apart.
We will end up bankrupt when the gulf money stops coming.
The need for the hour is to develop our own industry.

Kerala has about two million people working overseas out of the total state population of about 30 million, according to BBC's Soutik Biswas....two orders of magnitude higher proportion (66 per 1000) than either Bangladesh (0.65 per 1000) or Pakistan (0.5 per 1000), according to Nationmaster. Their remittances may be one of the reasons why Kerala has less poverty and higher social indicators than the rest of India.

Please read what I stated earlier. It is foolish to rule out economic development. Economic development should be a tool to increase the standard of living of the people. The way we are going for behind economic development solely relying on GDP and GDP per capita is wrong! In short, HDI should have taken the place GDP has today. And GDP should only be given the amount of importance that we give to HDI today. Understood? HDI(Importance) > GDP(Importance) That is how it should have been. Look at China. The GDP of those big Industrial Cities is impressive but they live in dismal conditions. You want GDP and GDP only? Well, you are becoming China. :)

can u post another source? this blog is rather biased. the author seems to an indian obsessed jobless old maniac who subconsciously envies them and he doesnt even know it

Mr. Nair what do you think of the economic model followed by Singapore..a space constrained country (like Kerala) with high HDI and GDP.

Show me the stats about HDI in Chennai and I will agree with you. I bet that Idukki will have better HDI than Chennai.

It helps when people dont take a dump in the open. Go to sabarimala and see what the pilgrims from TN have done to the place. Last time I went there, nearly puked. The pilgrims especially from TN take turns to dump into the Pamba river. I m not trying to sshow TN in a bad light here but you should know what the people from a high GDP state come and do in a low GDP state.

Staying clean and preventing diseases dont need a high GDP mister. All that you need to do it bathe atleast 2 times a day and not taking dump in the open.

Comparing Chennai(metro) with Idukki ? are u kidding? wats that logic behind that comparing? wat is the importance of Idduki (don't say u living there):cheesy:.

In which way hygienic is relevant to tis thread? ok.. anyhow u written I suppose to give reply. Your name itself indicates hw clean u are?? Your post suggested clearly that hw dirty we are ....so sad TN people made Pamba river dirty. We are non-hygienic(according to ur post) then better ban TN people entry and pass the resolution in ur state assembly that would be gud na?.

During mullai periyar issue keralites faced huge revenue loss becoz ,TN govt. not allowed TN Sabaraimalai devotees to enter into KL regarding safety concerns. Then your govt. begged badly to TN govt. to allow TN sabarimala devotees into KL after TN.govt granted permission , your traders and police from Kerala burst crackers welcoming passengers from Tamil Nadu.
Shameless people haaahaa.

We corrupting your river baldly and we are non hygienic then why the hell you people (including ur CM) begging at us?. Get life………..

So our desire to solve the Mullaperiyar issue amicably and our effort to be good hosts are now seen as our weakness. Also you make it seem as if the entire Kerala depends on the revenue generated from TN devotees.
