What's new

The J-11B's, J-15's, and J-16's next generation radar

L band and X band each have advantages and disadvantages. Thats why countries are moving towards dual band radars.

Yes but one in radome is usually X band aesa radar & in leading flap edges of Wings L band aesa radar not both to have an entire L band radar in radome .No country is placing L band radar in it's Radome usually X band aesa radar is 1st priority

For comparison the Tikhorimov L band AESA radar has detection of 1 m^2 targets at 130 km and 0.1 m^2 targets at 75 km.

The area of an entire radar cone is much larger than just the wing tips the Russian ones use.

Russians to have X band AESA radar in it's radome not L band

so an entire L band aesa doent sound wise enough

The performance differences between a leading edge L Band radar and full size one are humongous. Its called specialization so that it does its job better than a plane that tries to do two things. 450 km detection vs 130 km detection is no contest.

China has a X band AESA radar in development as well with one in the 8-12 Ghz spectrum with 1152 elements in a J 10 sized radar that is modular and capable of being enlarged or shrinked based on need.

You know what they say jack of all trades master of none.

In that case this may be a brand new radar that is not yet being used on production aircraft.

The general designer of the Chinese KJ-2000 AWACS stated in an interview that research in the next generation of AWACS was being focused on countering stealth aircraft, so it is possible that radars like this have benefitted from that research as no other fighter radar in the world can detect 0.1m^2 target from as far away as 250km. Only way to get this kind of detection range on such as low-RCS target has been to use AWACS aircraft.

This is in L-band, remember, so that detection at 250 km is not unrealistic. However, this radar seems like it's for Flankers. It also matches with the story that this radar lost out to the J-10B's radar for the J-10B bid since they couldn't shrink it down.

This radar shown is exactly like the one seen on the J-11B a while ago.

Some points regarding this new radar:

1. It is in L band

2. It can track a 0.1 m^2 target from 250 km away

3. It can track a 1 m^2 target from 450 km away

4. The radar is very similar to the rumors about it in terms of characteristics
