The Hypocrisy of Afghan People towards Pakistan

For Centuries People from both end Pakistan and Afghanistan were called Pushtuns because there was no Durand-Line no border and no hatred between Pushtun People. But than their came East-Indian Company and along with it, it brought British Army and hence the entire Afghanistan was divided into two Countries. For years, I used to think that Afghans are our brothers, they are just like us and that there is no division between us whether a Pushtun lives across the border or here in Pakistan he will follow only one rule and that is Pushtun-Wali.


But now, things have gone way too far. I reckon we aren't the same People anymore. Though we speak the same language Pushto, though we have the same tribal customs, rules and regulations. Though we still follow the Pushtun-Wali custom but no there is no possible way to think that we are the same People, we are different, yes we are Pakistanis and they are Afghans.


When Pakistan came into being we were only 40 Million, at that time we left roughly around 55 million Muslims in India, as the time went by the Population of Muslims increased every single year. Now we are around 220 Million and they are roughly about 225 Million. We Pakistanis speak Urdu and so as the Muslims across the border in India speaks the same Language and they also call it Urdu. We love Baryani, Polao, Beef, Lamb, Goat, Chicken curry etc and so as they do. But if you ask any Indian Muslim that would he or she ever come to Pakistan and live here permanently their answer will be no (in exceptional cases I might be wrong) and if mistakenly you said something bad about India they will hate you for that forever. That's how the Indian Muslims are apparently. And I don't expect less from them, it's their Country they should react the way the do. When we Pakistanis live abroad and someone abuses our Country we don't spare their lives, some of us even go to an extreme level of retaliation.


I explained everything above just because of one reason and it is that I have encountered a very odd sitch. Before I get into the main story that what exactly happened let me please explain you and give a brief introductory of a person about whom I am writing this article for and the reasons behind it. He is off-course an Afghan Pushtun.


I have known Ali (I made up this name I don't want to expose his name for many reasons) for almost 4 months now. He runs a small vegetable and fruit shop in a vicinity where I live. Couple of weeks ago when the Pakistan Government announced that it will commence the sixth census in the Country, lots of Afghans got frightened because they believed that they are on the verge of a massive deportation that will be starting soon. Hence, Ali who is around 19 or 20 years old started to panicking as well, out of curiosity and anxiety and also because of a fear he asked me to do him a favour, a favour of explaining him that how can he protect himself from deportation and become a Citizen of Pakistan, offcourse illegally.


We Pakistanis have to admit that we have an extremely soft heart, no matter if you are a Punjabi or Sindhi or Saraiki or Balochi or Pathan or Gilgiti you will be up to help a person if he is in need. So I was extremely sympathetic towards him. He runs this shop in collaboration with his maternal uncle. Who also happens to be an ex-Afghani, why have I used this word ex? Because according to him he made his Pakistani ID card back in 1992 only paying a Rs 20 thousand in bribe.


Now, Ali told me that what if he declares that he is the son of his elder maternal uncle? no one will find out right? According to him his elder brother did the same, he said that his elder brother declared that he is the eldest son of one of their relatives and he is living a free life in Karachi as a Citizen of Pakistan. And when I thought about it he was right, who the hell would know. Do we have a medical laboratories and DNA testing facilities where we will be able to test whether the family relations are authentic or not? No off-course we don't have, nobody in our Government cares. But what happened was that when he discussed this matter with his elder uncle he denied to support him by any means because in this world nothing is free. According to him his uncle was frightened that what if the enquiry happens after his ID card and he will be caught.


Ali family lives in Afghanistan, according to him his mother died when he was only 8, his father re-married and his step-mother doesn't give a f*** about him. He lives here because economically Pakistan is feasible for him, in other words he doesn't give a f**** about Pakistan, and he hates his step-family.


Couple of days ago when Pakistan Government closed down the border I went to Ali's shop just to buy few things from him. I asked him whether or not he has fixed his problem. He told me that his uncle denied him any kind a help. So I asked him sincerely that he should now at least go ahead and register himself as an Afghan Refugee since according to him he has no thumb expressions or any kind of record of him neither with Nadra nor with Afghan Consulate. It made him worried and make me feel bad for him once again. But then we had an argument over the closer of the Afghan border. I told him that his current Government is playing under the hands of Indian Government, he denied it as the rest of the Afghans. When I asked him about the price of the tomatoes he replied 140 Rs. I told him it was just yesterday when I paid 60, how come the price has jumped this high, he replied with an evil smile on his face, that go ahead and close down the border on us once again and you guys will die because of a hunger. His remarks made me worried and I started to realize that yes indeed we are now two different Nationalities, there is no so called brotherhood left between us.


Today just an hour ago before writing this article I went to his shop and after Islamic greetings I congratulated him that the Pakistani Government has finally reopened the Afghan border. Instead of accepting my sincere wishes he replied to me that "well you guys are lucky otherwise your country would had lost in Billions, if you close Our border again India will stop supplying you tomatoes and other vegetables and People in Pakistan will suffer, you guys will suffer soon when India will get a chance to put its hands onto you" this time I went rocker of my head, I said to him "you ungrateful bastards you live here, you earn here, you dig the every single fortune of this Country yet here you are abusing and cursing the every single fortune that this Country has given it to you" I suggested him that he should leave this Country ASAP otherwise if he gets caught, People from Government will do whatever they desire to do with him.


I must confess that I wanted to report him, but then I realized that I shouldn't, and this is why it made me write this article for you guys. I need your suggestions, that what if someone is in a situation like me? Isn't this our duty to report a matters like these to our concerned departments? What if we do, is it considered a sin in Islam. I am completely confused about it and I need a help from every single person out there. I urge to the Government departments too that they really should look into the matters and come out with a solution of the genuine concerns that I have just explained earlier.


This is our Country and we will protect it no matter what. Our elders died and have had given an unlimited, unconditional sacrifices for this Country not because some Afghans ruin its peace and prosperity. I believe our Government and our establishment should look into this matter more seriously, if they let everyone to be the Citizen of Pakistan than I believe Syrians, Yemenis Kashmiris and Palestinians deserve to be the Citizen of Pakistan more than these ungrateful Afghans.

Its partially Pakistan fault for giving them freedom to do what ever like any other Pakistani and now suddenly they are asked to go back. But your advice to him was good, he should at least register with UN. They will then give him $400 and wheat for 6 months when moving back. If police caught him without CNIC then he will likely get deported empty handed. Can't blame his uncle because Nadra is under pressure now because of corruption. His uncle got away with CNIC but will be in real danger of getting caught if tried to add him to family tree.

About 260,000 such returnees have arrived in the past 15 months, pushed out by Pakistani authorities and encouraged to return by the Afghan government, but lacking official status in either country.

In many ways, they are misfits and intruders in their homeland - nomads allocated bits of rocky ground to pitch tents and build cinder-block huts; surplus labourers in a market crowded with men who have fled insurgent fighting nearby; half-forgotten relatives trying to squeeze back into villages where no one has room to take them in.


"There is nothing here but dust," said Hakim Khan, 55, a labourer and father of 10, standing on a stony hillside where the government said about 700 returnee families could settle at no cost. After seven months, most have gotten only as far as marking their plots with cinder-block walls, partly because of a dispute over who owns the land.

Meanwhile, they are camping in makeshift shelters, fashioned from bits of plastic and cloth and covered with sheets of tin. There is no electricity, and the only water source for 4,000 people is a single well. There is a one-room schoolhouse, but few of the children attend.

Inside Khan's tent one recent morning, three cots were jammed together next to a gas burner and a stack of pots. Children ran in and out, chasing chickens. His wife, hiding behind a curtain, was asked to name her most valuable possession. "There is nothing valuable enough to mention," she answered.


Most of these returnees never registered with the Pakistani government, which meant they were not entitled to cash payments and other forms of assistance by the United Nations' refugee agency when Pakistani officials began pushing out more than 2 million long-term refugees two years ago.

Many others with official refugee status continued on to Kabul, the capital, where services and work opportunities are greater. But these undocumented families - mostly poor and uneducated, with few connections - have stayed behind, hoping to find a niche in their geographic and ethnic Pashtun homeland.

At the moment, the official border crossing at Torkham is closed, a punitive measure taken by Pakistan last month after a string of terrorist bombings there were linked to militias based on the Afghan side. The flood of returnees slowed to a trickle this winter, although UN officials expect it will resume when spring comes and the border reopens.

Meanwhile, those who arrived last year, piling their possessions in rented trucks, have tentatively settled in a variety of camps, communities and government-allocated tracts. Their only substantive aid comes from the non-profit International Organisation for Migration, which provides shelter and basic supplies for the first few weeks, plus transportation to their destination.

"We are there when they arrive at the border, but what happens after that is a different issue," said Matthew Graydon, a spokesman for the organisation here.

One major problem is securing property rights. Most arable or habitable terrain is already claimed, and some arriving groups who attempted to reclaim family land have found that others had acquired it and expected them to pay. In the village of Karokhel, 500 families came back last summer, planning to put up homes, and instead became embroiled in a nasty fight.

"This is our ancestors' land, and we kissed the stones when we arrived. But now it feels like a prison," said Hajji Mahmad Jan, 65, who left Karokhel 40 years ago. Most families are living in tents, with wheat sheaves for fences, while the legal wrangle continues. "Just to fetch a bucket of water from the spring, we have to pay 50 cents," he complained.

Another shock is the scarcity of jobs, with the national unemployment rate at 40 percent. Early each day, returnees crowd street corners in Jalalabad, hoping for temporary work hauling bricks or loading trucks. One recent morning, several glum men said they had waited for weeks without snagging a single job. One became so desperate that he spent months in a distant migrant camp, picking grapes for $5 a day.

Returnees also face job competition from villagers displaced by the insurgent conflict. Some have fled fighting between Taliban and government forces; others have escaped districts controlled by more violent Islamic State-linked militias. Jalalabad is relatively safe, with security forces guarding and patrolling the roads, so the jobless population has swelled.

The luckiest newcomers, others say, are those with relatives and communities to welcome them back. But they too may be struggling to get by. If a long-absent uncle suddenly reappears with an extended family of 20, Pashtun tradition demands that they all be accommodated, but resentment can fester and disputes flare.

In one farming village north of Jalalabad, bordering the Kunar River, five local families returned from Pakistan last fall. There was no space for them, and tensions soon erupted. Two brothers in their 30s, one an engineer and the other a business owner in Pakistan, found themselves jobless and living with their families in dark, mud-walled rooms that opened onto a yard for sheep and goats.

"For the first few nights, my children kept asking why we didn't turn on the lights," the businessman, Nanjialai Khan, said bitterly. The engineer, Rafiullah, confessed that he could not bear the idea of working as a farm labourer. "People here work hard. They use shovels," he said, making a digging gesture and then showing his palms. "It is difficult when you have had a softer life."

Another man from the same family said he had no choice but to pitch a tent in the yard of a relative with whom he had a personal grievance going back years. He seemed distraught and said he was unable to sleep.

"Here we have to live with our enemies, but we have nowhere else to go," said the man, speaking in a whisper. He said he did not remember the village, and that his earliest memory was of fleeing across the border as a tiny child after Soviet forces attacked Afghanistan. "This is my country," he said, "but I cannot see the future at all."

I must confess that I wanted to report him, but then I realized that I shouldn't, and this is why it made me write this article for you guys. I need your suggestions, that what if someone is in a situation like me? Isn't this our duty to report a matters like these to our concerned departments? What if we do, is it considered a sin in Islam. I am completely confused about it and I need a help from every single person out there. I urge to the Government departments too that they really should look into the matters and come out with a solution of the genuine concerns that I have just explained earlier.


This is our Country and we will protect it no matter what. Our elders died and have had given an unlimited, unconditional sacrifices for this Country not because some Afghans ruin its peace and prosperity. I believe our Government and our establishment should look into this matter more seriously, if they let everyone to be the Citizen of Pakistan than I believe Syrians, Yemenis Kashmiris and Palestinians deserve to be the Citizen of Pakistan more than these ungrateful Afghans.

You should perform your duty as a law-abiding citizen and report him. Law of the land should take its course. It is for his own good.

He must register himself as a legal refugee in the host country. Should he fail to do that, things might get really ugly for him if he is caught during census.

Remember, Pakistan is still a developing country. Even in developed countries illegal migrants are getting harsh punishments.

The government should run a program. Report a Afghani, and if the Afghani is found to be illegal, the person would get a monetary reward (Something like SR5000). Win-win situation.

Its partially Pakistan fault for giving them freedom to do what ever like any other Pakistani and now suddenly they are asked to go back. No I reckon he is not a brainwashed Afghani, he is simply an Afghani with an attitude and no respect for this land. Yes, I do agree with you that it is our Government fault who has given them the freedom that no other Country would ever give to any Refugees living there for 4 decades. But than what can we do? I have seen people having an extremely heated debates over Nawaz Sharif and his counterparts that they are extremely sympathetic People towards this Country. What can you do when you have an ignorant living around you, can't they see the in-competencies of the Government?

And I believe my rest of the friends who commented about this concerns of mine are right. I have a duty towards this Country and that duty oblige me to report him.

For Centuries People from both end Pakistan and Afghanistan were called Pushtuns because there was no Durand-Line no border and no hatred between Pushtun People. But than their came East-Indian Company and along with it, it brought British Army and hence the entire Afghanistan was divided into two Countries. For years, I used to think that Afghans are our brothers, they are just like us and that there is no division between us whether a Pushtun lives across the border or here in Pakistan he will follow only one rule and that is Pushtun-Wali.


But now, things have gone way too far. I reckon we aren't the same People anymore. Though we speak the same language Pushto, though we have the same tribal customs, rules and regulations. Though we still follow the Pushtun-Wali custom but no there is no possible way to think that we are the same People, we are different, yes we are Pakistanis and they are Afghans.


When Pakistan came into being we were only 40 Million, at that time we left roughly around 55 million Muslims in India, as the time went by the Population of Muslims increased every single year. Now we are around 220 Million and they are roughly about 225 Million. We Pakistanis speak Urdu and so as the Muslims across the border in India speaks the same Language and they also call it Urdu. We love Baryani, Polao, Beef, Lamb, Goat, Chicken curry etc and so as they do. But if you ask any Indian Muslim that would he or she ever come to Pakistan and live here permanently their answer will be no (in exceptional cases I might be wrong) and if mistakenly you said something bad about India they will hate you for that forever. That's how the Indian Muslims are apparently. And I don't expect less from them, it's their Country they should react the way the do. When we Pakistanis live abroad and someone abuses our Country we don't spare their lives, some of us even go to an extreme level of retaliation.


I explained everything above just because of one reason and it is that I have encountered a very odd sitch. Before I get into the main story that what exactly happened let me please explain you and give a brief introductory of a person about whom I am writing this article for and the reasons behind it. He is off-course an Afghan Pushtun.


I have known Ali (I made up this name I don't want to expose his name for many reasons) for almost 4 months now. He runs a small vegetable and fruit shop in a vicinity where I live. Couple of weeks ago when the Pakistan Government announced that it will commence the sixth census in the Country, lots of Afghans got frightened because they believed that they are on the verge of a massive deportation that will be starting soon. Hence, Ali who is around 19 or 20 years old started to panicking as well, out of curiosity and anxiety and also because of a fear he asked me to do him a favour, a favour of explaining him that how can he protect himself from deportation and become a Citizen of Pakistan, offcourse illegally.


We Pakistanis have to admit that we have an extremely soft heart, no matter if you are a Punjabi or Sindhi or Saraiki or Balochi or Pathan or Gilgiti you will be up to help a person if he is in need. So I was extremely sympathetic towards him. He runs this shop in collaboration with his maternal uncle. Who also happens to be an ex-Afghani, why have I used this word ex? Because according to him he made his Pakistani ID card back in 1992 only paying a Rs 20 thousand in bribe.


Now, Ali told me that what if he declares that he is the son of his elder maternal uncle? no one will find out right? According to him his elder brother did the same, he said that his elder brother declared that he is the eldest son of one of their relatives and he is living a free life in Karachi as a Citizen of Pakistan. And when I thought about it he was right, who the hell would know. Do we have a medical laboratories and DNA testing facilities where we will be able to test whether the family relations are authentic or not? No off-course we don't have, nobody in our Government cares. But what happened was that when he discussed this matter with his elder uncle he denied to support him by any means because in this world nothing is free. According to him his uncle was frightened that what if the enquiry happens after his ID card and he will be caught.


Ali family lives in Afghanistan, according to him his mother died when he was only 8, his father re-married and his step-mother doesn't give a f*** about him. He lives here because economically Pakistan is feasible for him, in other words he doesn't give a f**** about Pakistan, and he hates his step-family.


Couple of days ago when Pakistan Government closed down the border I went to Ali's shop just to buy few things from him. I asked him whether or not he has fixed his problem. He told me that his uncle denied him any kind a help. So I asked him sincerely that he should now at least go ahead and register himself as an Afghan Refugee since according to him he has no thumb expressions or any kind of record of him neither with Nadra nor with Afghan Consulate. It made him worried and make me feel bad for him once again. But then we had an argument over the closer of the Afghan border. I told him that his current Government is playing under the hands of Indian Government, he denied it as the rest of the Afghans. When I asked him about the price of the tomatoes he replied 140 Rs. I told him it was just yesterday when I paid 60, how come the price has jumped this high, he replied with an evil smile on his face, that go ahead and close down the border on us once again and you guys will die because of a hunger. His remarks made me worried and I started to realize that yes indeed we are now two different Nationalities, there is no so called brotherhood left between us.


Today just an hour ago before writing this article I went to his shop and after Islamic greetings I congratulated him that the Pakistani Government has finally reopened the Afghan border. And that's the reason I wrote this article, see I know I have duties towards this Country and I am completely aware that my silence is not good at this stage, but don't you reckon that our own Government doesn't give a f*** about them? Have you seen a campaign against Afghan Refugees? Have you seen that our Government has established a special task force for the identity of the illegal residence? I haven't seen one. So tell me, even if I know that this guy will do more harm to this Country whom should I speak to? No one cares, how I know? Well, one of Ali's friend was at his shop the other day. He was extremely tensed. When I asked him that what happened to him, Ali replied that his Pakistani ID card is in scrutiny now for the last 4 months. I asked why, Ali replied that "His father married twice and that he has 14 children including him. When he was born his father was told that if he writes his date of birth at least 6 years earlier than whats his actual age is, than it will make him a legit Citizen of Pakistan before anything goes wrong. Hence, his father managed to bribe the hospitals in Peshawar and mentioned his year of birth 1991 while he was born in 1996, when he went to NADRA for his new ID card, they NADRA attendant reported him as a fraud and an inquiry started against his Domicile and his legitimacy. He was than sent to the NADRA headquarters and his case was forwarded to IB. Two IB officers on two different occasions came to his house and interviewed him. One of them asked for 50 thousand in bribe. The other one however according to him was an honest man, he told him that his case is an easy to go and that it will be resolved in no time.

Now my question is that why doesn't NADRA call upon his entire family for a scrutiny? And how come they let go off such an illegitimate person without knowing about his family?

Despite govt begging people to report such people and not give any houses,vehicles etc on rent to such elements due to security concerns , our people still havent learnt!

People do report but than nothing happens, trust me, I know that, few of my friends reported against few of their Afghani neighbors but nothing happened to them until now. Believe me our Intelligence agencies knows that who is Afghani and who isn't, they simply don't care anymore.
