Islamabad: Pakistanis will have to shell out more for samosas following a Supreme Court ruling, a move that has left a leading Pakistani daily wondering whether it was the "court's best use of time".

An editorial in the Dawn on Wednesday said that the days of the cheap samosa are over.

"While the savoury little delight is consumed with great relish by Pakistanis around the year, sales of the samosa skyrocket during Ramazan as it is a staple of the iftar spread," it said.

The Supreme Court has set aside a notification of the Punjab government regulating the price of samosas.

The editorial recalled that in 2009 the Lahore government had fixed the price of the crispy delight at rupees six a samosa. The bakers and sweet-makers of Punjab went to court.

"When the Lahore High Court turned down their petition, the bakers appealed to the Supreme Court. They felt the samosa did not fall within the purview of the Punjab Foodstuffs (Control) Act, 1958, hence the government could not fix its prices, a notion the Supreme Court seemed to agree with," said the daily.

The daily noted that while the commercial bakers will rejoice at the verdict, "others waiting for justice in Pakistan's ever-clogged judicial system may be wondering when their turn will come".

"With a question of interpretation of a law at stake, the Supreme Court was the ultimate forum for resolving the matter, however trifling it may appear to the average citizen. The question, then, is whether the superior judiciary should devise some rules and a system to fast-track more urgent and serious matters for justice rather than spend valuable time on a regulation that is virtually unenforceable in any case...," it said.

"Samosa-makers may be happy and another case struck from the superior judiciary's docket, but was it the court's best use of time at this stage?"

Best use of courts time is to provide justice to any and everyone who knocks at the the supreme courts doors regardless of who that is.

Just cheap peole trying to make money... Food should be cheaper in Ramzan not costlier!!!!!

It is a waste of the SC's time, but it points out the hopeless situation in the Pakistani legal system. If the low order legal framework functioned properly, these things would be handled at that level. As it is, nobody wants to take responsibility, everybody passes the buck and it all piles up at the SC.

Welcome to Pakistan where courts acquit known terrorist leaders and regulate prices of snack foods. There are over 1.4 Million pending cases but who gives a hoot as long as the court is being unbiased with their holiness, the samosa makers

Samosa price at the Supreme court????

As if the courts have nothing else left to do.. Anyway, I am a Samosa Lover

Doesn't Pakistan have lower level courts that ever matter need to be taken care of by supreme court itself? Ok, I saw it later they did went to High court..

On a side note - Rs 6 a piece of Samosa itself sounds costly to me. In India, Samosa costs around Rs 1 or 2 and obviously the price changes depending on the place you are eating..

At my place samaso is of around 8-10....where do u get 1-2 rs??

he's probably talking about samosi's not samosa. I have noticed some states make smaller samosa's than others. gets bit chatpata too:lol: BTW it's 2-3 rupees in Punjab, Haryana.

Well the tribal courts are always there to announce real quick verdict in tough cases such as the Dr. Afridi case, samosas can take the front seat at the SC ;)

Abe, I was talking about Samosa and i was telling Rehri-walas (road-side stall) rates not in Bikanerwalas or Haldirams because I guess Rs 6 a piece is the Rehri-wala rate in Pakistan..

If I am not wrong for Rs 10 you get samosa chat with 2 samosas (not samosi, whatever that means) with chollay on it. Don't know if the prices have moved up pretty much in past few years..

Guessing you have not visited India in a long long time...!!

My place 1 samosa = 10 Rs... With no chollay or whatever...
And samosa chat = 30 Rs...
These are not the rates of rehri-walas though... Small corner shops rates that make samosa, kachories etc.... :smokin:
Samosa chat at good shops = Rs 50 plus..!!! :hitwall: :hitwall: :hitwall:

PS : Rehriwala samosa = 5 Rs minimum.....
