Vietnam is not exhausted after the war. It has the largest and most battle experienced forces in ASEAN with plenty of welll stocked resources donated by China and Soviets. Precisely after the war, Vietnam needs to conquer others to replenish what was lost previously. Vietnam knows American will never come to ASEAN aid after vietnam war, the soviet/Vietnam pact even boast Vietnam ambition.

Only China stands in Vietnam ambition.

The blood wasn't shed for nothing. Dengxiaoping's plan was to slap the Soviet Union right in the face and show the world that USSR wasn't able to protect its allies and he knew what he wanted, a short war but not a prolonged one. His real design though was that by fighting this war, China would get the key to the western market and in turn the access to that huge untapped market would fuel China's economy dramatically and things played out exactly as he planned, after that war China embarked on the fast train of the economic development. Dengxiaoping was a very smart strategist, he knew without a limited direct conflict with Soviet bloc China can never get full support from the west and access to their market.

Deng lead China to condemn Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and boycot 1980 Moscow Olympics, All he did during that couple of years is to get western investment and access the western market. He outsmarted all world politicians of his time.

How many people were killed doesn't really matter cause it was never a real war that China intended, sorry but unfortunately Vietnam fell victim to Deng's global geopolitical chess game.

That war tells Vietnam at least one thing, never choose sides between two conflicting great powers, otherwise they can be unknowingly become a pawn or tool for great powers geopolitical games.

Great power can always choose when to use you, when to attack you and when to stop, they totally controls the process to best suit their needs.

Today's China is still totally run by Dengxiaoping's legacy, Nothing from Mao. 20 years after Deng's death, this country is still Deng's country, everything is run on Deng's legacy.
