I've just checked the new frigates scheduled to enter the German's Navy inventory from 2016.You've got to be kidding me ....a 7200 tonnes frigate (almost a destroyer) armed for AAW with only 2 RAM's....and that's it ! At a cost (which can escalate ) of 650 million euros each.

WTF ? French Gowind corvettes are better armed than those 7200 tonnes hunks of junk.What a waste of money...

Relax! It's their money, not yours!!

There is no difference between frigates, destroyers and cruisers in modern terminology. They are almost used interchangeably.

True BUT you cannot beat the 72 medium/long range SAM's that the Type-26 can hold. With the 200 km radar it will be one tough ship to sink for any enemy.

Indeed,on paper the Type 26 is a superb ship but i don't see a long range SAM on it.The CAMM is a medium range missile while the extra 24 VLS systems are designated only for land attack,anti ship,anti submarine missiles not long range SAM's.But this is speculative as it's just a project.

Ofcourse but my complaint is about the lack of medium-long range SAM's for protection.Corvettes(1500-2000 tonnes) with the MICA fare better than this ship.

They have designed the ship with each equipment having a replacement within the ship itself,located at different parts of the ship. So,the size will be more. The ship is more focussed on peacekeeping roles,hence the choice of weaponary. Yes,there are no SAMs,but who knows? It may be perfect for the role intended!

The design is pretty much set in stone in and building should commence next year.

It does not matter what the extra 24 Mark 41 VLS cells are intended for. What matters is that long-range SM-series missiles can be placed in the cells if desired. The 200km Artisan radar has the range and simultaneous target engagement capability to make full use of both the CAMM and SM-series SAM type potential.

If say Germany purchased the Type-26 they could easily purchase SM-series missiles to turn the Type-26 into by far the best anti-air warfare frigate on the planet. For 500 million Euros nothing comes close to the price/ capability offered.

PS- The Mark 41 VLS cells can also quad pack ESSM That has a range of 50km. So sticking to CAAM and ESSM missiles you will have nearly 150 SAMs!

Yeah - I have checked and it will have a total of 42 short-range RAM missiles. The Germans have gone nuts leaving an expensive frigate that not only could not defend other ships but would itself be highly vulnerable to air-attack.

Would the Germans be interested in purchasing the Chinese Type-052D at a similar cost?
That has 64 VLS cells that could take 64 missiles including long-range SAMs and cruise missiles

I think when it comes to radar and SAMs, India should be self-sufficient by end of this decade. Engines will take a little longer.

They all are our friends too. And we already signed for the export of components used in our projects So no problem

Nah - the Fremm could only hold 16 Aster-15/30 missiles at most. Not really enough to provide air-defence against swarms of air threats. Need at least 32 missiles IMO.

For a lot of reasons, Germany would never buy a Chinese ship no matter how good they may be or become in the future

So I think the best option for Germany would have been the upcoming Type-26 frigate from the UK. It will hold 48 medium-range missiles(CAMM) and would also be equipped with 24 Mk-41 VLS that could carry either Tomahawk cruise missiles or long-range SM-series SAM. For around 500 million Euros each, the Germans would be getting by far the world's best frigate.

Germans already have a great air defence frigate - F124 Sachsen.

Why instead more F124 they are building F125 - I dont know. Looks like some colonial anti piracy vessel rather than combat ship.

You are correct. 24 long-range SM-3, 32 medium-range ESSM and 42 short-range RAM is a very good air defence frigate indeed.
