Elon Musk predicted in November 2011 (before any Tesla Model S/X/Y/3 was ever built or sold as all he had was Roadsters) that he doesn't see BYD as a competitor in the World market and that BYD needs to first concentrate on doing well in the Chinese market..or they are going to die. Big words from somebody with almost no production at all.

It is now 12 years later and BYD still doesn't have much world marketshare. Tesla is known the world over. Elon Musk will get the entry in the history books as the one that kickstarted the world into switching to EVs...not BYD.

Remember Tesla hadn't even manufactured any cars other than the Roadster when he said that...and right now his Model Y is doing extremely well in China and BYD has yet to sell any cars in the US even after years and years of promises.

In terms of being a competitor in the world market...they certainly have spent years trying. Maybe they will finally succeed.

Driven by improved supply, high oil prices, government subsidies and price-guaranteed promotions by car companies, China's EV market reached almost 7 million units, with a penetration rate of 31.3 per cent.

Tesla Inc CEO Elon Musk, who once laughed at Warren Buffett–backed Chinese EV-maker BYD Company has now hailed its cars.

What Happened: Musk, on Friday, took to Twitter to respond to an old clip posted by Tesla Owners Silicon Valley Club, where the billionaire is seen laughing as the journalist asked him about BYD trying to compete with Tesla.

In the clip, after a brief laugh, Musk replied, "Have you seen their cars?" and started laughing again. He further responded with a "No" when the journalist asked if he doesn't see them as a competitor "at all."

However, Musk's opinion has drastically changed now.

"That was many years ago. Their cars are highly competitive these days," the billionaire wrote in his reply to the tweet.

Why It Matters: Musk's Tesla has faced rising pressure from growing competitors in the EV market, including BYD, in recent years. The recent sales figures showed staggering growth in EV sales, officially making the Chinese EV giant, BYD, the world's second-biggest electric car manufacturer that is rapidly catching up with Tesla.

Meanwhile, earlier this week, Ford Motor Co CEO Jim Farley, responding to a question on whether catching up with Tesla involves Ford growing returns from its EV business or Tesla facing margin pressure, said, "Both are going to happen."

To be honest, BYD is Tesla's closest compétition indeed and they are doing very well in China mostly and Thailand to à lesser extent..However, they need to expand their market and brand globally relying on China only like most Chinese car companies wouldnt make them à real competitor/threat to Tesla ever.
Tesla is indeed a formidable company. People have been writtinf them off for almost à decade now predictibg their demise and how other companies(BYD included) are going to décimate them, and yet Tesla has only grown stronger and more dominant globally. In almost every major country they are at the top or among the top car seller. In fact the EV industry flobally is defined by Tesla . They are the face of EV globally. China and BYD have a Longgggh way to go to pose a real threat to them outside China. Even in China Tesla is still among the top EV seller despite being more expensive on average than Chinese EV brands. This shows their strength. BYD should first completely dominate Tesla (who impressively makes just BEVs not hybrids) in BEVs sales in China before dreaming of dling so overseas. Tesla is still the undisputed King globally to be honest..

Chinese market is really competitive and if you can survive it, you can practically sell anywhere. The biggest problem with these top Chinese companies is branding and marketing, for God's sak3, BYD made a superb affordable car and named it DOLPHIN. MOTHERFCKER. GEELY used another approach, buy an ailing European brand, make the car in China and then stick that brand on it. MG too. Nobody in the West is gonna buy something named Geely, god damn it! Huawei is an anamoly because they really dominated their market and had quality and recognition for 2 decades before mass consumer brand recognition came in.
