Are any of you from Shanghai? Can you please tell me if there is a fruit called 'yamm-e' or something similar (I might remember the name/pronunciation completely wrong) that grows seasonally in the Shanghai region. It was a sort of berry that I ate there but I've never found it since.

i am in zhejiang ningbo, yangmei is local fruit , my favorite, enjoy it every early summer

Myrica rubra, also called yangmei (Chinese: 杨梅; pinyin: yángméi; Cantonese: yeung4 mui4; Shanghainese: [jɑ̃.mɛ][tones?]), yamamomo (Japanese: yamamomo; kanji: 山桃; katakana: ヤマモモ, literally, "mountain peach"), Chinese Bayberry, Japanese Bayberry, Red Bayberry, Yumberry, Waxberry, or Chinese strawberry (and often mistranslated from Chinese as arbutus) is a subtropical tree grown for its sweet, crimson to dark purple-red, edible fruit.

杨梅属于杨梅科杨梅属小乔木或灌木植物，又称圣生梅、白蒂梅、树梅具有很高的药用和食用价值，在中国华东和湖南、广东、广西、贵州等地区均有分布。杨梅原产中国浙江余姚，1973年余姚境内发掘新石器时代的河姆渡遗址时发现杨梅属花粉，说明在7000多年以前该地区就有杨梅生长。该属有50多个种，中国已知的有杨梅、白杨梅、毛杨梅、青杨梅和矮杨梅，经济栽培主要是杨梅。

杨梅 Yangmei - Red Bay berry
A specialty of Ningbo （see above pix @68 ）- pretty close to Shanghai. There are many other places which also produce the fruit, like Hubei - 恩施 Enshi， Jiangsu - 苏州 Suzhou (also close to Shanghai)，Guangdong - 清远 Qingyuan and 梅州 Meizhou ....
