The first six MiG-29 fighters intended for Indian air forces have been upgraded by RAC MiG, said in the reference materials presented to the journalists at the meeting of Duma’s Defense Committee held in Lukhovitsi (Moscow Region), RIA Novosti reports.
“MiG Corporation is upgrading the jets of Indian air forces in the network of MiG-29 UPG program implemented in accordance with the contract signed in March 2008. The first six jets have undergone the overhaul and upgrading at RAC MiG’s site. Over 90% of the jets will be upgraded in India”, – said in the reference.
The jets are equipped with advanced avionics unified with the avionics of ship-based MiG-29K/KUB fighters of Indian navy.
It is also said in the reference that MiG Corporation is performing over 100 contracts with 20 foreign countries and its total backlog is assessed at $6 billion.
It is stated that the basis of MiG’s backlog is formed by the contracts on deliveries, overhaul, upgrading of the fighters in Europe, Asia, Africa, South America and deliveries of spares and other property to operators of MiG aircraft.

the upgraded mig-29 clearly shows a hump on its back which probably houses new and much more advance EWS (Electronic Warfare System). As part of the upgradation program the MiG-29 will receive following additions:

# New Engines: The existing RD-33 engines will be replaced by the upgraded RD-33 Series 3 engines which will be manufactured by HAL (Deal to mfg 120 units was signed in 2005). These engines boast a engine life of 2000hrs along with BARK-88 FADEC and KSU-941UB Removed control system.

# New Radar: A new radar will be installed replacing the older Phazotron RLPK-29. The new radar is Zhuk M2E which is a slot array radar and not a PESA. It will have a faster processor, allowing it to classify targets by type (for instance, fighters, bombers and helicopters) and to break-out formation targets flying at 20-30 meters apart. The radar can also be programmed to identify aircraft by type – in the case of a new type, it can record its reflected signal and later use it for identification. (Aviation Week)

# New sighting and targeting system: The MiG-29 will get UOMZ's KOLS-13SM FLIR, Sh-3UM-1 Helmet Mounted Integrated Targeting system.

# New Ejection Seat: The existing ejection seats will be replaced with the K-36 D made by Zvezda.

# Other Systems: BKTsO Digital signal processor, BTsVM-90/BTsVM-486-2 (onboard computer), L-150NU (passive guiding missiles station), SVR video recording system, KARAT-B whole recording system, BINS-SP navigation system with GPS, A-053 radio-altmeter, MS-2 voice warning system.

The program also includes purchase of more missile, rockets, bombs and external fuel tanks. Notably it includes R-77 missiles which have range of 80kms and 160kms however it is not known which one India is getting.

Now say, CRAP or AWESOME??

+ brand new all-glass cockpit and TOPSIGHT-1 HMDS (just like IN MIG-29Ks)

^^ do these upgraded migs have 9,000 KG thrust version of RD 33?

The RD-33MK "Morskaya Osa" (Russian: Морская Оса: "Sea Wasp") is the latest model developed in 2001. It is intended to power the MiG-29K and MiG-29KUB shipborne fighters, however it has also been adopted for the MiG-35. The RD-33MK develops 7% higher thrust, is digitally controlled FADEC and smokeless unlike earlier RD-33 engines, has increased afterburner thrust to 9,000 kilograms-force (88,000 N; 20,000 lbf) and dry weight 1,145 kilograms (2,520 lb) compared to the baseline model through modern materials used on the cooled blades, although it retains the same length and maximum diameter. Incorporated is an infrared and optical signature visibility reduction systems. Service life has been increased to 4,000 hours. The RD-33MK ensures shipborne fighters unassisted take-off capability, retain performance in hot climate environment and, naturally, a boost in combat efficiency for MiG-29 fighter latest variant.[8][9]

wow now thats a news.. Remaining fleet of mig 29 should also be upgraded asap to give the IAF ageing aircrafts the much needed boost. :flame:

They will get all the electronic goodies you mentioned, but I think the hump is for additional internal fuel. I'm not sure about it.

These were notoriously short ranged birds due to the old fuel guzzling engines (two of them). Hence the upgraded ones will have more fuel, as well as a hugely improved engine with lesser fuel requirements. Range and endurance will be increased a lot, which makes these birds truly multirole platforms, as opposed to being excellent air superiority aircrafts with a short range.

The hump houses new internal fuel tanks, which increases the range and endurance of the Migs.

Any source for that? So far I didn't saw one which mentioned weapons, which would be strange anyway, since we already have most of the weapons available in IAF used by other Russian fighters as well. The only really new addition is the Kh 35 for the anti ship role!

Now say, CRAP or AWESOME??

None of them, it's a good modernisation for the rest of it's life in IAF, but can't be compared to latest fighters. Personally I would divert them all to the coastline defence and replace them with (if possible Mirage 2000-5 /-9), MKI or Rafale.

Bad that the hump might affect its aerodynamic capability :undecided:

Not necessarily, because it replaces at least one of the external fuel tanks it normally carries during patrol flights:

It adds weight of course, but with the increased fuel capacity and additional IFR capablity, it will be much more useful in the CAP roles.

No, they have the RD33-3 series of engines, the 9t engines are the MK versions of Mig 29K/35

Is this also an upgraded one ??

Yes it is, you can see it at the additional EW antennas / sensors at the tail fin for example
