We all know a lot about World War I, but have we ever heard it from the side of the Ottomans???

Today, I was researching the Ottoman Navy from start to finish and found a interesting bit of info. British Aircraft Carrier, HMS Ben-my-Chree, went on to be the first aircraft carrier to be sunk in the world during that war. And who better to sink that carrier than the Ottoman Navy! :chilli: Also a Muslim Navy at that time!

Keep in mind, it was the first ever aircraft carrier to be sunk in the world! And do you know HOW it happened???

Do keep in mind that this bit of info will be more harder to digest (well, for some of us). It was sunk by shore-based Turkish artillery fire commanded by Mustafa Ertuğrul. Not by any sub-sonic, hyper-sonic missile or even an aircraft but by artillery fire!!!

Well, do read the whole story by yourself. My job was to inform you.:D

Wow, never knew it. Also this incident must have contributed to improvement of design.

Is there a link that you can share?

The carrier link in my first post explains how it got blown off. A reference to this carrier can also be found at the bottom of the "Ottoman Navy" Section.

Sorry, both are wiki's but are still trust able! For no one would want us Muslims to rally around a fake story right? ;)

It was not an Aircraft carrier in any sense. It was a Seaplane tender.

It carried Seaplane in a hanger, and these seaplanes were put into sea/recovered from sea using a crane from where they use to take off and land.

It was equivalent to a supply ship of World War II.

lol, you had to butt in. :disagree:

Let me educate you now son. A seaplane tender WAS at that time an "aircraft carrier" since they were not that technologically advanced. Check out the history of aircraft carriers, they all started with these so-called "tenders", which is obviously a stupid name given to these things.

Want to know what came before the "seaplane tender"??? Balloon carriers! Read this before talking anymore. :coffee:

It would worth to check out dardanelles campaign at 1st, worlds largest fleet had severe damages and run away from there.

There is nothing much heard on WWI by Ottoman, because its not a war Ottomans win, but War was lost. When people commemorize WWI in europe, there was nothing done in Turkey also. Because in end of war ottoman empire is surrendered, its not something to be proud of,and commemorize.

When it comes AC sunk ,as i mentioned it was the largest fleet of world ever . So actually sinking of that ship isnt big deal, British and french had more serious losses in Dardenelles campaign. If we consider that ,the vessel mentioned to be AC wasnt a strategic vessel for fleet of allied forces , as ACs are now.

Your right that in a bigger picture, it wan't THAT important but still man! The FIRST, very FIRST honor of killing an AC didn't go to a German, American, British or an American (who were all at that time great powers) but went to the Ottoman Navy, an arm of the Ottoman Empire (the so-called "Sick Man of Europe").

A sick man capable of destroying an AC with just artillery fire! And as you yourself mentioned, the Ottomans kicked the Allies butt in the Gallipoli Campaign (also known as the Dardanelles Campaign). The Ottomans were against British, French, Australian, Canadian and Indian soldiers!!!

A much greater feat lol! :victory: But still, the AC knocking was a piece of its own. :partay:

We won the battles in Anatolia but lost the war. Partly because Germany got crushed by US invasion when they saw Germany crushing US allies.

That's a Seaplane Carrier. Very different from an Aircraft Carrier. Seaplane carriers were used largely for as a recon and supply ship. The damage to bigger ships was a greater acheivement by the Ottoman Navy.

.
---Ben-My-Chree means "Woman of my Heart!" (How cute!)
---She had a displacement of 3000+ tonnes and could carry 4-6 sea planes
---She was under Charter with the Royal navy and has previously served as a transport ship
--She was under anchorage while being struck by Turkish Arty strikes.
