A total of 14 outlawed Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK) militants were killed on April 29 in separate air operations in Turkey's southeastern Adıyaman province and northern Iraq, the Turkish military said.

In a written statement, the Turkish Armed Forces said an hour long air operation on Iraq's Sinat-Haftanin region starting at 8.31 a.m. had killed six militants.

In another air operation in the southeastern Adıyaman province at around 07.10 a.m., eight militants were killed.

The statement said the militants had been plotting terrorist attacks.

Adıyaman Governor Abdullah Erin said search teams including the Turkish Land Forces are currently sweeping the area.

"None of our soldiers were injured, fortunately," he added.

In a separate statement, the Turkish Armed Forces said a total of 112 PKK militants were killed between April 20-28.

The operations took place in Turkey's southeastern and eastern provinces of Şırnak, Hakkari, Siirt, Diyarbakır, Mardin, Tunceli, Bitlis, and Kars.

In the operations, 53 rifles were seized, along with two automatic rifles, six RPG rocket launchers, four sniper rifles, and 78 hand grenades.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said that as many as 220 militants had been killed in recent strikes elsewhere in northern Iraq.

On April 28, Turkish military “retaliated” to a rocket attack on a Turkish border post in the province of Şanlıurfa from areas controlled by the Peoples’ Protection Units (YPG) in Syria, the army said, killing 11 militants.

This added to an earlier statement, which said 11 border posts had been subjected to 13 attacks from areas controlled by YPG, following military air strikes on the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and YPG in Syria and Iraq.

Four PKK militants with million-lira bounty on heads killed in Turkey’s Adıyaman

n_112623_1.jpg

Four outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) militants who had previously been sought with a reward of up to one million Turkish Liras were killed in operations in the southeastern province of Adıyaman, amid the security forces’ ongoing efforts to tighten their grip on militants across eastern and southeastern Turkey.

The four militants were among eight who were “neutralized” on April 29 during an airstrike by Turkish warplanes targeting militants in rural areas near the villages of Çamyurdu and Yazıbaşı, Doğan News Agency reported.

The authorities use the word “neutralized” to refer to militants who are killed, wounded or captured.

Following their autopsies at the Adıyaman University’s Research and Education Hospital, it was revealed that the militants - identified as Veli Temirci, Abuzer Arıca, Fırat Berkpınar and Şefik Körman - had been previously been sought with rewards ranging between 300,000 liras and 1 million liras.

The four militants had been perpetrators of three separate attacks on security forces that killed two soldiers and one village guard in 2015. One of the attacks took place in the last days of the now-collapsed peace process, while the other two took place last year. Their names and pictures had also appeared on posters hung across the province.

The militants were reportedly preparing a fresh attack targeting security forces in the region.

Meanwhile, the Adıyaman Governor’s Office on April 29 declared the regions where security forces’ operations have been ongoing as “private security zones” for 15 days.

Separately, the Interior Ministry on May 1 stated that a total of 238 PKK suspects were detained during operations conducted over the past week.

The ministry said in a statement that security forces had conducted a total of 579 operations targeting the group between April 24 and May 1, detaining 238 suspects for allegedly “aiding and abetting the PKK.”

According to the ministry, a total of 65 PKK militants were “neutralized” during security forces’ operations across the country in one week, with 38 of them killed, 11 of them surrendered, and the other 16 captured.

Security forces also seized 52 weapons of different sizes belonging to the militants, while 34 sanctuaries and caves used by the militants were destroyed, the ministry added.

In addition, another eight PKK militants were killed during operations conducted in rural parts of the eastern province of Tunceli, which had been continuing since April 27.

Another 12 PKK militants also surrendered to security forces in the operations around the Hozat, Çemişgezek and Ovacık districts.

According to some media reports, the surrendered PKK militants had reportedly collected the bodies of killed PKK militants.

Elsewhere, security forces raided PKK camps and sanctuaries around Mount Kato in the Beytüşşebap district of the southeastern province of Şırnak for the first time in years, as a part of an operation launched 12 days ago in the region, Doğan News Agency reported on May 1.

During the operation which has been ongoing under harsh winter conditions, security forces spotted ammunition and weapon storages of PKK militants around the summit of the mountain.

Heavy weapons, rocket launchers, long-barreled weapons, explosives, ammunition, and organizational documents were seized in the operations. The camps and sanctuaries used by the militants were subsequently destroyed and their weapons were confiscated.

Meanwhile, specially trained reinforcements have also been frequently deployed to strategic points in the region by helicopters, while occasional heavy clashes with the militants were reported in the region.

PKK begins withdrawal from Sinjar after Turkish airstrikes

Local authorities reported that the PKK terrorist organization has decreased the number of camps in Mosul following Turkish airstrikes in the Sinjar region last week. Speaking to local reporters, Qasim Shesho, a peshmerga commander in Sinjar, said PKK terrorists have begun to relocate themselves and scale down their military presence in the region by decreasing the number of camps. "The PKK suffered a large amount of militant losses and material damage as a result of the [Turkish] airstrikes. The organization has begun to decrease the number of camps near Mt. Sinjar to protect itself from possible further airstrikes. It also seeks new places for shelter," he said.

Turkish military forces carried out airstrikes last Monday on PKK targets located on Mt. Sinjar in northern Iraq and Mt. Karachok in northeastern Syria.

The Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) announced that the targets were hit to prevent the terrorist group from sending terrorists, arms, ammunition and explosives to Turkey, resulting in the deaths of 89 terrorists, including four high-level militants.

Ankara has been warning the PKK to withdraw its forces from the Sinjar area for a long time now. Both Sinjar and Karachok are located some 90 kilometers (56 miles) south of the border with Turkey.

Meanwhile, following the airstrikes, U.S. forces have started patrolling part of the Turkey-Syria border together with terrorists from the PKK's Syrian offshoot, the People's Protection Units (YPG).

According to the statement of the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), "Coalition forces are conducting joint patrols along the northeastern Syria-Turkey border to assess reports from both the [Syrian Democratic Forces] SDF and Turkey regarding skirmishes and cross-border fire between their respective security forces."

The purpose is "to discourage escalation and violence between two of our most trusted partners in the fight to defeat Daesh," the statement said, adding that all parties in the region should remain focused on defeating the terror group.

Speaking to the press regarding the issue before heading to India on Sunday, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said Turkey was concerned about U.S. flags flying alongside the flags of the YPG on convoys in Syria. He also noted that he will discuss the matter with U.S. President Donald Trump on May 16 when they meet.

"This needs to end. Otherwise, we will have to take the matter into our own hands," Erdoğan said, adding that Turkey will have to continue launching attacks against the YPG in the Karachok region in Syria and Sinjar in Iraq.

Meanwhile, the Russian army also reportedly stationed forces in certain locations between the Turkish border and PYD-controlled Afrin, in northeastern Syria.

In a photograph, reportedly taken in the region, Russian forces were seen with YPG terrorists. Also, the Russian media asserted that Russian commanders met with YPG seniors to open a new military base in Afrin.
